Excellent... from someone who did it for 20 years!
13 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This is the ONLY movie about police work I've ever seen which is as close to the real thing as it gets. I know, I worked the street as a policeman for 20 years.

It's not all coffee and doughnuts wearing that blue uniform. People you are supposed to serve and protect spit at you and shoot at you. As the movie depicts, policework as a uniform officer goes from the routine theft to a gun fight.

Casting and acting for this film was first rate. Although produced nearly 40 years ago it still holds true today. Anybody who wants to be a cop should see this film first. Mike Palmiter, Williams IN retimlap@rtccom.net

The Sister-in-Law (1995 TV Movie)
8/10
Greed and vengeance
9 February 2007
Warning: Spoilers
As the story goes, a little girl's parents were killed in an auto accident and she carries hate for the rich other driver (actor Kevin McCarthy) well into adulthood with a plan to assume the identity of a forsaken daughter-in-law. She (actress Kate Vernon) becomes the supposed widow of the rich driver's deceased son by killing the real widow with the help of a lover, which she also later kills.

Part of her plan is to also kill-off the rich old guy (which she does)after gaining his trust and later an inheritance of millions, to be split with the rich guy's daughter.

But gaining millions via this ruse isn't enough. The convoluted subplots are confusing if not watched for carefully. Add a couple more murders and viewers have the finale of the the fake daughter-in-law getting what's coming to her.

It's not really a bad movie (with it's share of flaws) but the real treat is seeing gorgeous Kate Vernon in another good acting role.

The Dick Van Dyke Show: Big Max Calvada (1963)
Season 3, Episode 9
10/10
The kid breaks me up.
28 January 2007
One of the very best episodes of the DVD series. The writers of the Alan Brady show think that "Big Max" Calvada (assumed to be a mafioso)is at their office to push his nephew into show business with the help of able writers.

The nephew has zero talent but the writing trio (out of fear of failure on their part) do their best figuring that if the kid bombs, it's "curtains" for them. The kid does bomb at a forced pre-arranged nightclub performance but "Big Max" agrees there's no show-biz talent in him which demonstrates that he should go to college rather than show business. The writers are relieved that their skins are no longer in danger and all is well again with the Alan Brady writing staff. Mike Palmiter, Williams, IN.

Bad movies can be good ones
26 January 2007
Warning: Spoilers
On its own this is a fun-to-watch trash pic. The erotica is dated by today's standards but racy when it was made. For this to be a truly fun and enjoyable movie it needs to be seen as one of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 offerings. Mike Nelson and his Bot Buds start kicking the movie and never let up, all are well deserved wise-cracks.

The cast of bimbos have a total IQ of zero. Stranded on a Pacific island with their manager transformed into a monster (think werewolf) resulting from a mutant spider bite, the girls run around in a dither until a ship lands there with a couple of horny guys.

The ending has the monster sinking in quick sand clogged with many monsters from other B-grade movies. Mike Palmiter, Williams, IN.

Deep Impact (1998)
7/10
Good movie albeit somewhat flawed
18 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
In many ways this is a frightening all-too-real movie. The acting is superb but overdone, plus miscast here and there.

Robert Duvall is an excellent actor but totally out of character in this movie. He belongs on a horse driving cattle, or advising a mafioso, not with a bunch of much younger astronauts on an Earth saving mission.

And having the sub-plot of the two young love interests (Wood and Sobieski)near the end of the movie hauling that baby around was a bit much.

One other critique here... Just where did the Presidential Adviser and his daughter think they were going on that boat to avoid the impending world-wide disaster??

But the rest of the movie, including Morgan Freeman as The President carried the movie beyond a so-so rating to a pretty good one. Thumbs up and worth a watch. Mike Palmiter, Williams, IN.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: Time Chasers (1997)

One of MST3K's not-too-bad movies
22 November 2006
Of all the moronic movies that the MST3K crew have riffed, "Time Chasers" is of itself not so bad, but of course Mike and the Bots make it a delight.

In a nutshell: A guy invents a time machine for use in a Piper Cub-type airplane. He demonstrates it to a girl friend and a business agent for a trip 50 years into the future where everything is great.

Skip forward... a merchandiser gets in on this act and the future is changed for the worse. Later they all end up in Colonial Times for some action, and then crash from that era to the present day. Killed in the crash is the girl, but wait, her present day self is still alive and well. Huh?! Kookie but it all ends on a comical happy note. A bizarre sort of movie to watch but fun, and the MST crew never run short of wise cracks. A "thumbs up" all the way around. Mike Palmiter, Williams, IN.

American Playhouse: Overdrawn at the Memory Bank (1983)

Watch only the MST3K version
6 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Without the MST3K (Mystery Science Theater 3000) trio making fun of this movie it is completely worthless. Raul Julia, who was otherwise a good actor is totally wasted in this movie. As for plot line, there isn't one which is why the MST3K crew had a field day with it.

Visualize a really bad dream, turn that into a screenplay mock of a good movie which becomes a film, then you have the general idea of "Overdrawn At The Memory Bank."

The only redeemable features of this movie are two of the cast members who characterize Lorre and Greenstreet from the 1941 classic Casablanca. Mike Palmiter, Williams, IN (written 9-5-06).

Awfully good
8 March 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This movie nearly defies description. The plot line alone is outrageous: Some fruity aliens use zombies in an attempt to conquer Earth. And the visuals (if any other movie could be referred to as special effects) must be seen for a full appreciation. One can only imagine what Plans One through Eight might have been like!

It is a tribute to director Tim Burton to make a biopic of Edward D. Wood, Jr. ("Ed Wood" 1994) which included depiction of segments from "Plan Nine."

Although I saw many of the B-grade SiFi movies as a teenager during the late 1950s, somehow I missed "Plan Nine" back then. But a buddy did see it and made the understatement of the decade saying, "It wasn't very good." Mike Palmiter, Williams, IN.

The UFO Incident (1975 TV Movie)
10/10
Unparalled excellence for movies dealing with the subject of UFO abduction
2 March 2006
Had this movie storyline been fiction it would be among the best SiFi entertainments ever. But it depicts a REAL event! There are always the nay-sayers who try to debunk anything out of the ordinary. Yet the evidence of the Hill's experience is so well documented and compelling that it stands on its own merits.

The casting for this TV docudrama was first-rate throughout, and glimpses of the aliens and their procedures as reenacted during the hypnotic regression sequences is as frightening and spellbinding as it was back in 1975 when the movie first broadcast. For anyone wishing to pursue the event, this is amplified by hearing the actual voices of the Hills under hypnosis as recorded by Dr.Simon.

And adding to the validity of The UFO Incident as shown is the overwhelmingly convincing testimony of countless others who have reported similar experiences. Mike Palmiter, Williams, IN.

Among the top ten SiFi pics ever
20 February 2006
Warning: Spoilers
After more than half a century this SiFi classic still holds up and is better over all than most others of its kind. I've seen this movie many times in both its original B&W and colorized versions, always giving "the creeps".

My only criticism (a very minor one) is that the Thing should have been more alien in appearance. Simple make-up appliances such as ear, eye and nose alterations (different than human appearance) would have made the Thing even more sinister and horrifying. And would there have logically been only ONE alien saucer sent to Earth from outer space for an invasion??

None the less "The Thing" is a grippingly tense movie which includes not only startling images and staging but a haunting track of Other Worldly sounds effects. A must see for all fans of this genre. Mike Palmiter, Williams, IN.

Best of the rest
27 August 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This mst3k pick for a movie-bash was among their best choices for a solid three-way kicking. The riffs are perfect, especially the second part of the movie with the magic monkey.Abandon any logic for the movie story line which makes it all the better for the three silhouettes to work their acid tongues.Of all the many terrific mst3k movies, this one is among the very worst, therefore best!

Seems like getting rid of that devilish monkey toy would be the simplest task, but our movie hero goes to great lengths to cater it. How about just tossing it onto the burn pile with the half fried dog?

So add one more silhouette TV watcher's opinion from rural Indiana, Mike Palmiter.
