Jupiter Ascending (2015)
Derivative and silly
This film combines a weak version of an often-used central plot (young person of obscurity is actually spectacularly important) with a back story that's much too broad to do justice to in a two-hour movie. The result comes across as two-dimensional and silly. At first, the plot seems difficult to follow, but you eventually realize you're not missing anything; there just isn't much of anything there.
It might have made a better TV series, where the back story could have been more developed. Some of the most interesting ideas in the movie are lines spoken in passing, where you'd much rather hear more about that than to continue on with the current scene. Mila Kunis seems about a decade too old for her role, and the chemistry isn't great with Channing Tatum.
When you get right down to it, this is a muddled movie that seems like less than the sum of its parts. I suggest giving this one a miss.
Holiday Inn (1942)
How on Earth did this become a "classic?"
This film just has so many flaws. Aside from "White Christmas," the music isn't even that good; it's like the Irving Berlin junk drawer. All of the main characters are completely unlikable. The story's misogyny is only balanced by its misandry. You can't really "root" for anyone to get their way, because you want them all to get some sense smacked into them.
The only character who exhibits good sense is the jaw-droppingly stereotypical maid, Mamie. In fact, everything related to race is horrifyingly cringe-worthy to modern audiences. In a better movie, perhaps that could have been forgiven as an unfortunate aspect of life in that era. But here, it's the final nail in the coffin.
The film's only saving grace -- the only reason it gets a 2 rating from me instead of 1 -- is that you still get to hear Bing Crosby sing, and watch Fred Astaire dance with Marjorie Reynolds and Virginia Dale. If only they were singing and dancing to better songs in a better movie...
