Cicada (2020)

more than a film
14 October 2020
Seeing Cicada getting bad reviews is just frustrating, and they're probably coming from people who can not identify with the struggles portrayed in the movie. But anyway, this movie is magnificent, great camera work and directing, really nice music not forcing but enforcing the emotions felt in the scenes, but most important the story! The story is so great and captivating, and most of all so real and human. It's a story about the struggles, the trauma, the abuse, the discrimination, and many of us can identify in one way or another. But it's also about finally forming healthy relationships, trying to love and accept yourself and also trying to overcome all the trauma once caused by abusive and neglectful people. I feel so strong about this movie!! Just watch it! and love yourselves:)

This is a great movie!!

I really liked PUSHER, but PUSHER 2, is even better. I just saw it and it's already one of my favorite movies of all-time. Great character development in Tony's role, also his father is is very well portrayed without spending much time on that. Also the cinematography and the direction are great, they should be taught in seminars on how to make a great action-drama-neo noir thriller. And the music!! The music is just amazing.

TRUE MASTERPIECE
13 March 2020
It's one of the best movies i have ever seen. As simple as that, it's not easy to watch a black and white movie, with minimum dialogue, that's almost 3 hours long, and not get bored at all. The painted bird made it. The script is masterfully divided into chapters, that give a feeling of constant progress and action, also the editing is great and has some great takes of czech beautiful and peaceful nature in contrast with the cruel human beings. IT's just great

well directed, informative and touching
10 February 2020
If you are Greek you probably know by first hand everything shown in this documentary. But in any case it is a very well directed documentary, it doesn't bore you even though it's 2 hours long. I would like it to be a bit more political, more time spent on why the crisis happened and who benefits from that. I think Naomi klein would have a lot more to say about that. All in all if you want to know what happened in Greece from 2009 till 2015, and in a way is still happening now, just watch this documentary. I just hope things will get better. Congrats to the creators.

Disaster!
3 January 2020
I mean no disrespect to anybody, because i do appreciate some of the actors playing in this film, but this movie is as bad as it gets. No real character development, no realistic dialogues, it all looks too pretentious. The direction is awful as well. i constantly felt like those who made that movie, haven't even read the majority of kazantzakis work! So, i encourage everybody to read kazantzakis books, read all of them, read ZORMPAS, read it again and again! But you gain nothing by watching this movie..

WOW! JUST WOW!
29 December 2019
I always suspected Jim Carrey is a genius, but now i know it. Today i watched this documentary for the 2nd time, it gave me again so much to think about, it blows my mind. it's a very well-paced documentary with some great unseen behind the scenes footage, with Jim Carrey's insight into life and identity. Shows just how it feels floating into space with nothing to hold on to, being free and being your true self, not the one you created to please others. i just hope at some point in my life i will reach the mental state Jim Carrey is right now.

painful to watch with 1-2 bright spots
11 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
At some points this movie was so slow it was painful. At some points the metaphors used were so profound and shallow it was painful, and finally at some points the acting was so bad it was painful! Also the music wasn't great either. Someone could argue that it provides food for thought, like that there is no absolute good and evil, and you can't judge people that you don't know what they've been through, and that forgiving might be a healing process after all, but it doesn't get any deeper than " don't judge them, cause god is good and knows better than you".. So nothing new here... And it tries so hard to convince you that god is good it loses any philosophical value it might had. P.S. I really struggled to finish this movie, it is just a very bad movie! P.S.2: I totally agree that you should try to judge people as less as you can, and try to implement this in my life.... unless it's your child's murderer...

much more than a psychological thriller
4 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Saying that the "The Killing of a Sacred Deer" is just a great psychological thriller is at least undermining...

This film is full of brilliant metaphors, but you have to know Greek mythology and history to understand some of them. When Agamemnonas wanted to go to Troy to fight with his ships, there was no wind and he could't get there. So he asked the Gods to throw some strong winds, but the Gods replied that he had to sacrifice something in order to get the winds he desired, so they told him he had to kill his daughter. Agamemnonas thought about it and he decided to kill his daughter, but when he was just about to kill her, the gods transformed her into a deer, so he killed a sacred deer.

That's where the title of the movie comes from and you can easily guess the reason..

So this film is about choices, sacrifices and revenge. But revenge from the Gods. When Martin can bring sickness and death to Steven's whole family, in fact martin is in the place of a God from Greek mythology. And his duty is to bring the justice and punish those who overestimated their powers and tried to play gods( Steven went to do a surgery drunk)

In addition to that, this great film of lanthimos, gives a harsh critic to the modern way of living in the western societies. Alienation, fake goals, fake relations and money that that bring comfort but not happiness.

In conclusion it's a great film that gives you much homework to think about when you get home after you watched it and surely much more than just a great psychological thriller that many people believe it to be..

great thought provoking and easy to identify with piece of art!
28 January 2017
Well i don't usually write reviews but seeing a movie like this get an IMDb score of 5.2 is frustrating to say the least.

you don't have to live in NYC to relate to James and the fact that we know nothing about his previous life makes it even easier. in fact we only know how he spends hid nights since he broke up with his girlfriend. he could be me or you or anyone.

He is a really handsome guy thus having lots of success with random girls he flirts. but this happens to be the problem, he gets trapped in superficial relationships and the pleasure of having sex. his ego is huge and seems unable to form any kind of spiritual connection.

his only way of dealing with the problems he faces is alcohol and women even when that's exactly the problem, he responds with even more women.

In general it's a great movie that shows exactly the vanity that overwhelms our world and how superficial and temporary human relationships can get. How alone you feel deep down trying to fill that void with sex and drugs! it's a 9 from me. maybe i am not that objective with this one but it's definitely 7++

just don't
5 January 2016
CONTAINS SPOILERS! i really don't get all these great reviews and the 10/10. i wouldn't say it's that awful, i would just say it's not worth wasting 1,5 hour for this movie. It's nothing you haven't seen 1000 in the past. just a huge alien that can't be beaten and contained by the whole American army, decides to leave earth when a kid says two sweet words to him. this movie just didn't gave anything. it's like i knew exactly what was going to happen from the beginning. generally i am not a huge fan of that kind of movies so maybe you could say 'what was i expecting?' , a more innovative script maybe. in general i just don't recommend it!
