The Yorkshire Ripper (2019)
Some good, some bad
I understand the producer wants to focus on the victims, the female victims in particular, for this docu. I personally like that innovative point of view and it would be awesome if they succeeded. We get very little information about the ripper himself though. We do get a lot of focus on mostly women with very personal opinions, not facts, about the investigations made leading up to the capture of said ripper. Most of those are non sequitur. A large part of this series is quite interesting, well produced, nicely cut but nothing new for me personally. What makes this a bit droll are all the influencer style clips cut in here and there. Very strong opinions...
Another Life (2019)
Reverse Political Correctness
It has it all. And not in a particularly good way.
The strange back and forth concept where we get 10 seconds of action, a few minutes of explanations and then cut to back in time, back to normal time, a few explanations, back to action, explanations and cut back in time, repeat ad infinitum. Not a fan of that style of telling a story. It gets very boring, very quickly.
Everybody seems to be on drugs, all the time. Over and under acting is prevalent throughout the series.
The PC is strong in this one. We get to see the reverse stereotypes played out. We have the too obvious trans person, the gay person, the open relationship persons, the ultra slim person, the not so slim person, the cute person, the tech dude, the computer dude who obviously is a master figther, a never ending supply of people who just seem to fit their role on the ship perfectly And then we have the hologram and a supposedly logical story that is all but logical.
You know, beforehand, what is going to happen. Watching this series is like having figured out the solution to a 400 page crime novel before finishing the first two pages.
If you are a sci-fi fan you will regognice pretty much everything. There are so many scenes stolen, sorry I meant inspired by, the great sci fi movies and tv-serie we've all seen.
Not going to mentiin tge audio/video quality at all. Just take a look at that alien ship in the beginning. O_o
Nightflyers (2018)
It was promising, but...
It starts out very promising. A cool blue style-ish dark sci-fi series with an interesting story, great theme and not to rapid to introduce new characters, giving us a bit more time to get to know them. The main story is very interesting and something I really looked forward to sink into. Cast is pretty good too. However, some of the problem with it is, as an example, the numerous and frequently used scenes containing sexual innuendos. This gives the series nothing in character development nor story as it is presented. Just as it starts to get interesting we get thrown back into another intimate scene (if you can't create quality, just throw in intimacy, it sells). Then we have all the other 'cuts'. I believe I counted 10+ cuts to different stories/scenes under 5 minutes. Just as it gets a little bit interesting, cut to another scene. And my all time pet peeve, look backs. Again, with insta-transitions, we are presented with an abundance of pointless, non story driven scenes looking back at characters. Over, and over again. The natural flow of the story is pretty much non existant and it gets very boring, very quickly. It's like having 90 different buildups in a 5 minute song with 12.3 mic drops per buildup except that every third, seventh an fourth mic drop they do a key change from minor to major and back. Naturally for every 6.3 seconds there is a micro pause changing genre, speed and instruments just before you though you could start dancing again.
It could be great, but it's awful.
