The Get Down (2016)
In one word: masterpiece
It gives much respect to the origins of hip hop culture and the lives of those who lived and shaped those early years.
Acting, script, story development, setting, visuals, all on point.
The series captures the various plot lines in a seamless sort of way so that they all develop in unison. There's just the right mix of suspense, comedy and tragedy to remain realistic and the characters remain relatable and intriguing throughout.
I also love how the plot lines influence each other, so that these are 3 independent progressions, but yet still they all influence each other, even though the characters are not always aware of that overlap, just as in real life.
I agree with another reviewer who said this series may become a cult classic. It definitely has that potential.
My Favorite Five (2015)
Great Potential but Ending Falls Flat
I hated that the ending betrayed what was developing as such a great film. The concept was a creative twist on the "love that started wrong" story line. The script and acting built the right amount of tension and draws the audience in to really caring about the future of the characters, but then the way it all resolves was too fabricated and phony to make all the build up worth it.
All in all, the message about love and life is interesting, the actors were great and the dialogue was fun and realistic. Just a dry and failure of the closing scenes.
