Stereotypes abound in this movie
30 June 2006
Warning: Spoilers
As a responsible gun owner, this movie scares the crap out of me. This movie contains every stereotype i've ever heard regarding guns: The only black people in the movie are gang members. Every gun owner is either an anti-government conspiracy theorist, a redneck gun freak, or someone with low self esteem who buys a gun to feel like a man. There are no references to responsible gun ownership. No rules of gun safety are followed or even mentioned. Even the commentary of crew gun stories abound with anti-gun stories. Lots of stories about how they killed birds and how bad hey felt and how bad guns are.

The underlying theme of this movie seems to be that guns are bad and the only purposes they have are to kill or to make someone feel tougher. There is one quote in one of the commentaries that claims that England has a much lower murder rate than the U.S. because they don't have guns. Which is wrong, and if they'd bothered to do the research they'd have known that. The director admits that one of the purposes of the movie is to call attention to the gun issue. The produce claims that pro-gun people will like the movie because it reinforces their views and that anti-gun people will like the movie because it reinforces THEIR views. One of the actors says he likes the "neutrality" of the movie? Come on.

Even if you take the gun debate out of the movie. It's a B-movie. The characters put too much faith in each other. The bounty hunters are portrayed as vigilanties. The conspiracy theorists seem to have just walked out of a Michael Moore movie (Don't get me started). The actors seemed to be uncomfortable on the set. The low budget is evident in every aspect of the movie.

My recommendation would be to leave this movie on the shelf. Spend your five bucks on something from Disney.

Just a regular guys opinion

I have to admit, I was going to pass this movie up on the basis that it was written, directed, and starring David Duchovney. I liked the X-Files, but Duchovney's acting skills are not impressive to me. But it had Robin Williams in it. And I have grown to trust Williams choice in movies. I know that Robin Williams does not accept a movie unless there is something special there. This movie is no exception. If you can suffer through David Duchovney's 'acting' then you're in for a treat. I am very picky about what movies I recommend to people. This may not be the best movie ever made, and I might be a little skewed because it's an original idea. This is a coming of age story. But unlike most coming of age movies, this one has so few the normal clichés'. Sure they are probably all there, but since they were disguised I probably just didn't recognize them. Obviously i'm not a professional movie critic. But I would say watch this one and ignore the fact that Duchovney's acting skills may not be Oscar worthy. The rest of the cast do an amazing job. And the story is interesting without being overly dramatic.

Stinks would be an improvement.

OH MY GOD!! Let me start by saying that I mostly agree with gstan. As a Submariner myself I love sub movies. I also like war movies. This is neither. The only thing I can think of is someone watched Das Boot and decided to make a sub movie. Then had the idea of having Americans and Germans working together. The rest is weak at best. This movie goes up there with Full Fathom Five as the the worst Submarine movies ever made. I have to differ from gstan on one point, '..Red October' is not that accurate. You have to go back to classics to get accurate. It's close though. A lot closer than this. I would have to say that William H. Macey is the best part of this movie. Though it's definitely not his best. Not only skip this, but don't even bother to read the back of the movie box.
