Rosogolla (2018)
Rosogolla - A concept... Spoiler alert!
There is a scene in the film where the protagonist has a 'Eureka'-like moment when he finally realized how to make rosogolla and what was wrong with his earlier approach. At that moment, Mr. Williams asks him, "But what is this rosogolla?". When Nabin tries to answer him, he breaks down with fatigue and confesses the fact that rosogolla is his life and love. At that moment, one can see the yearning of a mendicant in his eyes and cannot help but feel happy and sorry for him at the same time. That is the moment when Nabin wins the adoration, appreciation and affection of the audience all at once.
The casting has been wonderful. Such innocent faces are hard to find among Bengalis as we have been hardened by time.
A special round of applause for Aparajita addhya saw it in the theatre and the random girls sitting near me were like... Ki lagche onake (she looks awesome!) a sentiment which I shall unabashedly endorse.
This is a film about a Bengali inventor who was also an enterpreneur.... a species of Bengalis which has now become extinct but was once a matter of our pride... specially during 1860s.
The story was completely engaging. There was no loose end. I cross-checked the facts and can now vouch for the fact that the film is thoroughly researched and the facts have been accurately shown. The conversations between mother and son, Bhola Moira and Nobin and Hirod and Nobin does get philosophical at times but always stay true to the essence of the film.
Don't even get me started on the music. Kalikaprasad had a Heath Ledger-like exit from the world.
