Aquaman (2018)
Real fun movie
Okay so it's not really Oscar worthy but if you want to see a movie that is a lot of fun, and visually stunning, go see Aquaman.
Great cast. Jason M is so cool and then they threw in William Dafoe and Nicole Kidman too.
The best popcorn movie around.
Lady Bird (2017)
Boring
Although this movie was only about an hour and a half it felt like over two hours. I kept looking at my watch to see when it would end. The acting was good, but the plot felt like the writer took everything that could affect a teenager and threw it into a movie. I generally like thought evoking movies, but this one was just not compelling.
Of the three people I went with, only one would recommend it and then only to a limited viewing audience. A lot of people really liked this movie, at least in the reviews, but there no one in the audience was saying how much they loved the movie as they exited the theater.
Year by the Sea (2016)
Boring
Uses every cliché in the books.. There were audible groans at the screening I attended at a film festival. Talk on the way out was "awful" and "disappointing". The acting was good. The scenery was wonderful. The plot was lacking. The time line didn't really fit the narrative. Only one of the five people who were with me enjoyed the movie. The casting was very good. At least the producer chose the right actors for the roles. I was impressed by the scenery. It is really a very beautiful part of the world. It is very disappointing when you go to a movie with such a splendid cast and leave wishing that there was more to the story line and plot.
Carol (2015)
Very mediocre
The film was beautiful, but there was barely a plot and it was soooo slow. It was hard to relate to the characters who were very stereotyped and not very sympathetic. Carol was predatory, and it was hard to see what actually drew her to her "newfound" love, and vice versa. The only thing the two had in common was being pretty. Carol was practically a pedophile who found a naive victim (this would be unacceptable in a heterosexual relationship, but is somehow acceptable here). Sarah Paulson is a great actress but her character was shallow and never developed. I found the film to be very boring and fell asleep towards the end. Granted, I saw the last show of the day, but I doubt I would have enjoyed it more if I went to the matinée.
