Mare of Easttown (2021)
A gift unwrapped slowly & how
Just like most of its predecessors in thrillers, set in a nondescript town, the Mare of Easttown, moves at an intentionally languid pace trying to introduce the characters & sub-plots. Once all the pieces are in, the storyline picks up some momentum & tries to keep the suspense going up until the season finale.
With some predictability & suspension of disbelief, it becomes enjoyable. The acting is the best part of the show, with most pivotal characters able to pull it off well, led ably by Kate Winslet as the protagonist. Supporting cast around her does a commendable job too.
I watched it over a span of seven days, being able to take in one episode a day & that made it a palatable watch. Won't suggest binge-watching, but let it slowly build up as you unwrap the layers of story everyday.
Would rate it high in my list of web-series in recent times.
Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar (2021)
Also Faraar (eluding) is Logic, Pace, Screenplay, Acting and Story
This is one of those movies again which I watched because of the credibility of the Director, but let down magnaminously. Had I been in theatres, I would have left mid-way. Had it not been my precious iPad, I would have kicked the screen in frustration. Such a disappointing movie in such depressing times.
Ford v Ferrari (2019)
A historic story told with pace & panache
Cristian Bale puts his method acting to perfection, getting inside the character of the talented race driver Miles. While Matt puts in a sophisticated performance as a racer-turned-businessman, it is Bale who rules the little-longer-than-needed film time. The characters have been drawn out beautifully in the early part of the movie & the crux of the Ford vs Ferrari rivalry hits the peak during the climax. A special mention goes out to the child actor who portrays Miles' kid for betraying the innocence & excitement of the racing phenomena which swept the early 60s. If you enjoyed Ron Howard's Rush for the personal rivalry of James Hunt vs Nicki Lauda, you should definitely watch out as the giants Automobiles lock horns through the amazing driving skills of its racers. Go for the film in IMAX or 4DX wherever possible, and you would find the time just zip past you.
First Man (2018)
First Class but tad short of Outstanding
On the Golden jubilee of the Giant Leap, I feeling nothing less than proud of mankind's achievement of something 50 years ago! Everything could have gone wrong with the mission, yet everything turned out to be right on the fateful day. Now talking about the movie, I feel it could have explored the dynamics between Armstrong & Aldrin since both were risking it together. It appeared as if NASA had put two strangers (actually three) into the cockpit which really wouldn't be the case. The humane side of Armstrong has been depicted well by Gosling & given that the movie is about "First Man", it is going to be biased about Neil anyway. Even though I watched Gravity (which seemed too gimmicky & an unnecessary Clooney), this is a better watch.
Badla (2019)
Official Remake, but doesn't stand out - Better watch the Original
With such powerhouse of talent in the film's credits, I felt somewhat let down by the execution & acting. Apart from Amrita Singh, I felt the actors were all trying to look too brooding & serious to match the storyline. And some overacting too.
Few minutes into the movie & we could understand what the whole story is. May be it should have been titled something else than "Revenge". The director should have taken cue from why the Spanish moviemaker of the "The Invisible Guest" chose to keep it vague. The Spanish movie is the basis of this film & after watching the trailer of this foreign movie, I feel Sujoy Ghosh had kept the movie running on his laptop while he shot the film alongside on the sets.
Expected some improvisation from the 'Kahani' storyteller.
