Evil Dead (2013)
8/10
You want gore? You want insane? You'll like this.
15 March 2013
I saw an advanced screening of Evil Dead in San Diego and this was one wild ride! First off, don't go in expecting the greatest character development. If you go into this movie looking for character development and such, you are sadly not in the right mindset. Remember how you approached the Evil Dead trilogy? Did you look for character development there? You go for the pure entertainment with the horror, laughs, and gore. This remake, it's the same sort of approach, only it's a huge emphasis on the gore. The gore really delivers in gallons here as there is not a single moment that is dull. Once things start going crazy, they never let up and this movie just becomes insane.

Was it a scary movie? Well, people did scream. I got chills on some parts, and you are constantly on the edge of your seat as you just don't know what to anticipate with each ticking second. I'd say it can be labeled as pretty scary at times.

The acting was solid all across the board. Levy gives the best performance as Mia. She really made you love or hate her and it was to both extremes. The characters were likable overall, despite you not really getting to know them all too well. Then again, did you get to know all of the characters that well in the original Evil Dead? You did not and it is a cult classic. There were some nods to the originals, but I will not say what they were as I feel everyone should experience it.

This movie was an awesome ride with all kinds of blood and crazy moments. This movie will stick with you and it won't completely sink in because, let's face it, you're eager to see the next installment in the Evil Dead franchise. Typing this review, I can say that this movie has not completely sunk in. Great stuff! As for the post-credits, I say ask yourself: would you stay after the credits for a Marvel movie? That should give you a good idea there.

A documentary the whole horror world should have
5 February 2013
Living in the US, I would read the term "Video Nasty" when it would come to collecting horror films such as the Beyond or Island of Death. I never looked into the term and then I'd come across it more and more. It would always be there when a movie like Horrible would hit DVD and you would see people say things like "finally a Video Nasty gets a DVD release!" Finally, after getting an all region DVD player, I decided to look into this whole "Video Nasty" list and see what I had and needed.

This documentary was the big step as it details the Video Recordings Act from 83 and it tells the story of how the powers that be in the UK would have police raid video stores to seize the "Video Nasties" that would morally corrupt society. I already have this fascination with how people react to horror films and how the genre is so different with people compared to other genres. But to see a whole country be affected by a list of horror films? Wow! It takes you through the events and how the legal battles went and everything. Truly fascinating stuff for any horror fan.

The extras on the DVD feature every trailer for every film on the list. I can proudly say this documentary was one of the greatest purchases I have made as a horror fan as it made me go after the remaining 33 movies listed on the Video Nasties list. I wish the documentary would get a region 1 release so people here in the States can appreciate a piece of horror history.

Not all movies on the list are available on DVD. However, if you look hard enough like I did, you will find them.

Everyone should see this. If you are a true horror fan, do yourself a favor and get this documentary. If you are a horror collector, get this documentary and start one of the funnest horror hunts you will ever have as a collector.

The Possession (I) (2012)
8/10
If you don't like this, then you're possessed
31 August 2012
Yes, you have seen and are familiar with possession films. Ever since The Exorcist, we've seen a number of pretenders. However, despite a lot of imitators, there are many that are solid like Beyond the Door. Yes, we've been getting a lot of possession films, but that is to be expected when they keep making all kinds of money. Don't worry, this is a solid horror film overall. The acting was good as the cast was perfect. The suspense was there with the nice buildup and the atmosphere. What I liked is that this was about the Jewish religion instead of the usual run-of-the-mill Christian or Catholic religious theme. The film was shot well and the production values were a plus.

I really liked the climax as it was up there with the Exorcist. I thought it was pretty intense and memorable. You just didn't know what was going to happen, thus keeping you on edge. Emily is a character that I will remember in horror history as I kept thinking of Regan from the Exorcist. Great performances all around.

The special effects were solid. None of the CGI was terrible as it was polished, making things feel realistic. There are scenes in this movie that will stick with you. There were some memorable quotes in this movie as well.

I am glad I saw this. I am also glad that my Possession button from Comic Con 2012 was not a throwaway freebie as well!

Gingerdead Man: Birth of a cult icon!
30 September 2011
Fans of Full Moon movies and campy horror movies will like this one. Gary Busey is great in his role as Millard and eventually, the titular character. Funny, creative, and an all around good time is what makes the Gingerdead Man a fun little movie. My only gripe with this film is that it tries to be a serious horror film. How can you take a killer gingerbread cookie seriously? Luckily, the sequels have nailed the formula and have made this (in my opinion) the best modern Full Moon franchise. Once I saw the sequels, the more I began to appreciate this movie. Great quotes, and a very memorable movie have made the Gingerdead Man a cult icon.

A total riot!
30 September 2011
I remember when I first saw this movies, my expectations were low. The original Gingerdead Man was decent, but it was a little too serious. Luckily, this sequel does it all right and is by far the best in the series! Lots of gross out humor, decent gore, funny kills, hilarious lines, offensive humor, and just an all around riot! The first time I saw this movie, I was laughing my butt off! Saw it a second time, and I still laughed! Movie does a great job of poking fun at Full Moon and internet movie critics and movie fan-boys. The tiny terrors were hilarious! This movie made me have a better appreciation for the original, and now I just want this series to continue. Love the Passion of the Crust!

Another one bites the Crust!
30 September 2011
Gingerdead Man with Gary Busey was solid fun. Gingerdead Man 2: The Passion of the Crust was a riot. Gingerdead Man 3: Saturday Night Cleaver follows a similar formula that GDM 2 had and is yet another entertaining entry in the on-going series. A fun movie with a tremendously well done opening scene! Lots of dirty humor again and lots of deaths. I also get killed in this movie (I wear #80 in the background on some scenes and get electrocuted). Only gripes with this film are the CGI was a little bad at times, and I don't remember it acknowledging the first 2. However, those don't factor into the overall movie too much as this is another fun film. Long live the Gingerdead Man and I hope there is a part 4!

We get sucker punched!
25 March 2011
I went into this film expecting a fun, over-the-top action-packed movie with an okay story. I was very curious about this movie and I wish I never sat down to watch it.

The storytelling was terrible. First off, our main character is somewhat established as we see she has a brutal relationship with her stepfather...only it is done in a music video sort of fashion. Right there, you instantly don't care for the character as much because you don't feel her pain. There's no real dialog or emotions that happen. Instead, it was like a music video as it glosses over her background. The rest of the characters aren't well established, and neither is the rest of this story. We have dancers, who dance to impress men. We then enter the mind of our main character when she dances and all of a sudden, this timid girl knows how to fight and kick ass with all kinds of weapons? She is now the leader of the pack? This movie was like combining Black Swan and Inception, and just ruining both stories! There was a lot of pointless action with tons of CGI effects that weren't worth the hype. I felt like I was watching a dumb video game on the big screen.

This movie was pointless and it was very dull as there was little suspense and some very not so intimidating antagonists. Zach Snyder has had some solid movies in the past, but unfortunately, this movie was a black eye. We (the audience) get sucker punched when watching this mess of a film.

Good, but lacked the overall viciousness of the original
23 March 2011
The original exploitation film from the 70s had that viciousness to it. When Jennifer is tortured and raped, you really feel for Jennifer. The intensity was there and the storytelling in that film was really good. The revenge was pretty cool, and it made for a solid rape-revenge film.

The remake felt watered down when it came to the raping of Jennifer. If you're going to remake an intense exploitation flick, you'd better bring it all on when it comes to the intensity. Sure, the torturing and the taunting by the antagonists were a nice plus, but when it came down to the raping, it just felt tame. The storytelling in the remake was not as good. Just like it was mentioned on the boards, you have to suspended a ton of disbelief. In the original, we somewhat see Jennifer go through the recovery process and get an idea of what she is doing in hiding. Here, Jennifer is gone for many minutes! How does she survive? The highlight of the remake was the revenge factor. The stuff that Jennifer dishes out on the antagonists was awesome! I really enjoyed that part a lot more than the original. Overall, I Spit on Your Grave (2010) is solid, but tame in comparison to the original.

Bleed (2002 Video)

Good little slasher
6 March 2011
Enjoyably movie from Full Moon (at the time Shadow Entertainment). It has some solid gore and a good little story. There are some nice twists and turns as the movie goes on, and there's never a dull moment. Debbie Rochon is good as always and there's even a cameo by Lloyd Kaufman. Anyone who says this movie is terrible is lacking intelligence. This the worst movie of all-time? Wow, I'd really hate to see what they think is the greatest movie of all-time. Most people that dislike Bleed are the types that have sensitive stomachs or have no liking for low budget films. Generally, they're the worst critics of all-time. Ignore the negativity and watch Bleed. If you like slashers, gore, and Full Moon movies, you'll like Bleed.

Murdercycle (1999)
7/10
Not bad, but could've been better
5 March 2011
I was always curious about Murdercycle as it had that interesting name to it and the potential for some good action. On top of that, it was a Full Moon movie. Murdercycle was not too shabby. It has a solid little story that developments as the movie goes on and things tend to get interesting. The concept was pretty cool and made for a decent little sci-fi movie. This movie could've been a lot better, however. The PG-13 rating is what really holds this movie down. This was just asking for some crazy gore, especially with people getting ran over by the Murdercycle. Add in some crazy gore, you make the action of this movie all the more memorable. Instead, it was action that just average. Even with an "Action Extreme" studio name attached to it, you'd better bring on the insane action. Unfortunately, that is not the case. My other gripe has to do with the Murdercycle itself. With that sort of name, there should have been some heavy duty weapons and crazy stuff. Instead, just little blue lasers that can't even destroy trees! That made the Murdercycle seem weak. Overall, not a bad little movie, but definitely could've been so much more. I guess it can be called a missed opportunity to an extent. Think of how cool merchandise could've been for Murdercycle...

How so few take this film as fun...
28 February 2011
I am one of those few who liked this movie. I was always reluctant to get this on DVD, but during a Full Moon Valentine's Day Sale, I bought it. A solid little cult sci-fi film with some decent special effects. I liked the development of Billy and how he slowly is possessed and driven completely mad. My only gripe with the movie has to do with the storytelling. How did the original alien in the beginning get on earth and why? Also, what was the deal with that alien being wanted from the other space aliens? That is never explained, however, it's easy to not think about it.

Too many people take movies seriously these days. Time for people to lighten up and realize that movies don't have to be perfect in order to be fun. Glad Billy blows up a billboard with "Star Wars" on it! Take that Star Wars nerds!

The Crazies (2010)

One of the better remakes!
26 February 2010
George Romero's 1973 cult classic was a fun film. It focused a lot on the government and the scientists trying to figure out the cure. It also had some solid chaos in it. It was a very memorable low-budget film and when a remake was announced, I was not pleased.

Boy do I love it when I am wrong sometimes! The Crazies remake was a fun film. It had the tension, the violence, subtle social commentary regarding how the politics in America work, and it was a fun thrill ride. What I loved most was the violence. The story was pretty faithful to the original and all it needed to do was up the violence. Great fun and it kept you guessing when things were going to turn bad. The tension was perfect. Easily one of the better horror remakes I have seen in the last few years. My only minor gripe with this film was the ending. I won't spoil it, but it felt a little lame to me. However, I liked the movie so much, I want a sequel! How crazy is that?!

Frogtown II (1992)

Why not name our hero Ranger Jaws here?
14 February 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Return to Frogtown was a hard film to track down. Well, I accomplished that mission and it had been sitting on the shelf for a good while. Wish it was kept that way! First, Sam Hell is of course not Roddy Piper. He is replaced by a dude with a large face, less charisma, and this poor actor is very soft-spoken for the part! Sam Hell is supposed to be rebellious and awesome. Here, he gets captured THREE times! What kind of a hero is that?! Spangle is replaced as well here by another actress. Why did we not get different characters here? This was stupid! Lou Ferrigno stars in this film and he is not even the hero. Common sense says let Lou be the hero of the film! Bad effects, poor acting, and just a forgettable film. Funny as they take shots at Ninja Turtles 2 with the whole concert scene in this movie. At least Ninja Turtles 2 was funny and not a bad movie! I really wanted to like Return to Frogtown, but I just cringed when the fight scenes would commence. This film makes Turtles 3 look like gold! Avoid this or you will be the one singing "meaner, greener, talking turtle TV dinner!"

Gotta love cult films!
14 February 2010
I was first introduced to this movie by my dad after watching They Live. He told me that Hell Comes to Frogtown was another good Piper movie. Boy was he right! This movie had magic to it. I mean, any dude would love to have the task of trying to impregnate fertile women in order to re-populate humankind right? Hot Rod was great in his role as Sam Hell. It was entertaining with good humor and when the fighting occurs, it pays things off nicely. Well written script makes for a fun b-movie. To quote Roddy Piper in what was his final Piper's Pit in 1987 (of course he'd be back in 89): "When I was well I was hell man." He sure did well as Sam Hell in this one!

Amazing
22 May 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This film was amazing. It had the feel of the chaotic future that we all envisioned. There was some great action, good acting, decent script, lots of nostalgia trips, and an overall great movie. Going into this film, I had a feeling it would be good. My expectations were simple: tons of action and let the story be told with little expectations. So "critics" and other reviewers didn't seem to have that. I hate the whole "well it failed to be like T2." Why is it when a Terminator is made, people automatically compare to the epic T2? If James Cameron was at the helm, then I can understand that thought process. It's like people are machines and are infiltrated with the thought of "it's not like T2, must hate." Another thing that gets on my nerves: everyone claiming there is a lack of character development. For Blair Williams, I understand that statement. However, if people complain about John Connor's character development, then some serious movie studying needs to be done. John Connor was developed in Terminator 1, 2, and 3. He was a rebellious kid, then a reluctant young adult who grows to accept his role in the Terminator Universe. How Bale portrayed him in this movie is what I expected. He was rebellious by going against Ashdown's orders. He was reluctant in that he didn't want to trust a machine. In the end, he unites the people and fights to the death! He becomes their leader. That isn't hard to understand is it? Sam Worthington was awesome. Great performance as he stole the show. People hated the opening scene of Marcus on death row. Why? It's called character development people. You complained about the lack of it and when it occurs here, people turn into hypocrites. MCG did a great job. All 3 films were acknowledged in the storytelling. A famous cameo happened. Sarah Connor's voice is heard. Sarah's picture is shown. Battles and catchphrases make you remember the first 2 films a lot.

One last complaint I can't stand: "they (the machines) should have killed Reese when they had the easy chance."Hello, Skynet captures Reese to lure Connor. Marcus' purpose is revealed in this as an infiltrator gathering targets. It is not rocket science. Great movie. Ignore the so-called "critics." Ignore the usual illogical haters. Ignore the negativity because this film was a HUGE positive in the series. I love all 4 films and am ready for Terminator 5!

Why the hate?
19 May 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Terminator 2 was the end to the series. Or so we all thought it was. I can remember as a kid wanting to have a Terminator 3 just because I was so fond of this series. Next thing I know, I enter my first year of college and my wish is granted! Now, people don't like this because of the weak dialog, the contradictions of "no fate.." and other items. As for me, I liked this film as it was a great action film. It also continues the story and it was right to the point. The only thing I knock this movie for is how the story was told. Mostow only scratched the surface with the script and I felt like he needed to have things explained through the character interactions more. Yeah, Robert Brewster runs Skynet. However, Mostow should've had the T 101 explain this as it would have convinced people by shedding some light on the whole story.

This film is under-appreciated. The ending is great and now I want Terminator 4 to come out!!

The amazing beginning!
19 May 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This was the film that made me a Terminator fan for life! Sure, I saw T2 in theaters as a kid before I ever saw the original, but this movie did the trick. The Terminator has a terrific blend of action and horror as it makes for a great little roller coaster. This has an original plot, great acting, and a great theme. The fear of machines taking over the world through a nuclear war vs humans is depicted beautifully in the future/flashback (or flash forward ha ha)scenes! Great casting as James Cameron created the start of my all-time favorite franchise.

".....there is a storm coming." That storm would be the greatest sequel in movie history, T2. T3 would then follow after that and a whole new trilogy (at least as it was announced) is in the making.

Greatest sequel ever!
19 May 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I can remember being a kid and seeing this in theaters for the first time. The moment the skull was crushed by a machine, it caught my attention and I was in for a true treat! The action, the deep meaning, and everything else make up the greatest sequel ever! This film brings up the interesting theme about humanity and how a machine can learn the value of human life.

The action and overall intensity speak volumes! The casting was brilliant and the actors put on some of the best performances ever.

I cannot say enough about this film. The Terminator and the T1000 are 2 of the most iconic sci-fi characters ever and for more proof, just watch this film!

Not scary, but still very fun!
11 January 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this movie and it was fun to watch. Now, people complain about the acting. I didn't expect great acting because based on the trailer, I was anticipating a Slasher/Survival type film. So what mindset do you go with? Why Friday the 13th, Elm Street, or Texas Chainsaw Massacre of course. The character development was decent at best. Sure, there is still lots to be desired as to why the "Elite Hunting" was formed and the background behind that. There's also the mystery of what happened to the Dutch businessman who wanted to be a surgeon. However, the story is still solid. The torture wasn't as intense in the scenes like I was hoping, but the psychological impact definitely can be felt when watching this. Proof? How bout on some parts, I actually had some chills. That tells you something. The kids attacking the car was sort of cool because it reminds you of the classic film, "Children of the Corn." The kids are their own posse and will do anything to satisfy themselves. It's almost like a parallel to the "Elite Hunting." The people that work there WANT MONEY TO TORTURE PEOPLE! The kids want SIMPLE BUBBLEGUM OR COINS AND THEY ARE WILLING TO JUMP THE ELITE HUNTERS! Sorry, had that reaction about that scene after reading a comment by someone who felt that scene didn't make sense. The pay off for the whole thing was great too. It all comes full circle in the end.

This film did a solid job at pointing out how society is today. Many people love sex and drugs and aren't responsible enough for their well-being. Then there are some people who are responsible, but get belittled by party-animals because they aren't as hardcore as them. There was some great symbolism of the old saying, "nice guys finish last." The proof here was Josh not making it. The greed in society was portrayed here as people were willing to do anything for money. Those people were the ones who didn't care about the lives of the others in the torture chamber so to speak. It shows that bribery in society can work and people can be easily brainwashed.

I think usage of flashbacks for the "Elite Hunting" and the Dutch businessman would've helped this movie more. Other than that, no complaints here as this was a fun little roller coaster ride once everyone got to Slovakia.
