Gangs of London (2020)
There is more shooting than dialogues
I think the filmmakers were inspired by "Gomorrah" and tried to do something similar, but it didn't work out because they forgot about the script.
Instead of dialogues there are shootings, sometimes the exchange of fire takes 95 percent.
I'm on the fifth episode and I know as much about the characters as I did after the first episode: practically nothing. The plot doesn't stick and is boring.
New characters appear in almost every scene, most often you don't know who they are, why they appear, what is the point of this scene, what is going on and then these characters suddenly disappear. And you're left with WTF on your face.
Mata Hari (2016)
Plot holes or maybe budget cuts
The series was ruined by a poor script. Or perhaps the producers miscalculated costs and had to cut the budget during filming.
The plot has holes that make the viewer confused about what is going on. Who are the people around Mata Hari? In the first scene, we see her devastated after the son's death as she prepares to run away with her daughter from her husband. Suddenly she is in some house, without her daughter, there are rumors of some accusations against her.
Suddenly some man appears who is in love with her, but it is not clear how he met her, or who on earth he is, and why they then work together in the stables?
Flaked (2016)
It promised to be pretty good, but then
It was light, funny and clever but only to the sixth episode of the first season.
Then... I have a feeling that the writers were out of ideas for the plot from that episode.
Because how else to explain repeated plots, dialogues, scenes when other plots (Dennis & Kara, Dennis and his mom, Tilly and Chip) end without any sense?
The characters keep coming up with the same problems and dilemmas over and over again.
The plot with the hotel returned 6 times, 6 times involved the same characters, 4 times it was solved in Chip's favour and finally 4 times it turned out that Chip is a completely foolish, because he let the same people to cheat him four times in the same case.
In the second season, the ironic comedy disappears and is replaced by a boring, clichéd soap opera, where drama, chases more absurd drama.
The Bold Type (2017)
Unrealistic
Nothing special and nothing outstanding, just good to pass the time. From the fourth season, the series is losing momentum. Threads are lengthy and boring.
My friend told me that she imagines that my work as editor in large editorial looks just like in Scarlet. And she was very surprised when I told her that this whole media world in the show has nothing to do with reality.
Screenwriters didn't do their homework at all.
It's some archaic vision of journalistic work taken from old bad series and movies.
I'm surprised by the lack of basic knowledge. I understand that such details as website relaunch (editorials don't turns off their websites to change something) or that texts are not sent by e-mail, to be checked are not common knowledge. But an educated person should know that in democratic countries board never tell journalists or editor-in-chief what to write about something or not and does not attend in editorial colleges. It is against ethics and the law.
Brave New World (2020)
Visually bland and boring
Brave New World is one of my favorite books, so I was glad the series was going to be made. I was hoping it would be as good as The Handmaid's Tale, but it's not.
This series reminds me of a TV commercial in which a fake journalist invites to the studio a fake doctor and asks him for the best cough syrup. You know, a green screen and some simple background, two people who can't play, and boring dialogues.
This series is the same: it's boring, visually bland and with bad acting.
Also, I have the impression that people who have not read the book will absolutely not know what is going on, narrator would be helpful.
Belgravia (2020)
Only if you have nothing better to do
I'm on the fourth episode. The series is boring, every episode seems similar.
The characters are bland, it's hard to sympathize with them or like. Everyone looks average (even female characters who - as the story says - are supposed to be beauties). More like extras, it's hard to remember them. The acting is also so-so. The plot doesn't convince me, the dialogues are poor without imaginativeness and interaction between characters.
Somewhere Between (2017)
Unconvincing story, poor acting, too fast action
I agree with other opinions about the bad acting. Sometimes actors express emotions that don't suit the situation. The problem is also that the characters were poorly presented, you have no chance to get emotionally involved with them. They were thrown into action, which is very fast - in my opinion too fast - tension should be built up slower, because all the bustle here is annoying. Half of the first episode, and you've already met a dozen people! Oh, God, how will I remember them all? Because most were shown for about half to one minute and they all act like runaways from Arkham. And seriously - the investigative journalist is married to the prosecutor? And she is working on cases that interest her husband? I'm sorry but in most countries (and from what I know in the United States too) it means a conflict of interest and one person must change profession. Nobody would give a case to the prosecutor who is a journalist's husband, too high risk of information leak. And No journalist would be seen as objective in such a situation.
Marriage Story (2019)
Nothing special
The movie is well done and played. It was nice to watch but I was surprised that so many people see this as a masterpiece.
In my opinion there is nothing special, nothing memorable. I've seen dozens of such films before.
Catherine the Great (2019)
Far from the facts, not funny and boring
Far from the facts, not funny and boring.
At the time of her husband's death Catherina was 33 years old. And this is where action of the series begins. So can anyone tell me why the role of the young queen was given to 74-year-old Helen Mirren?
A series about Russia was made without any Russian actor in the cast. And I think that only Russians can present the specificity of the nation, those madness, impulsiveness, passions, cruelty. As a result, series is far from reality, it's a British interpretation of Russian history.
Black Earth Rising (2018)
Wasted potential and weird obsession with vomiting characters
I read a lot about the genocide in Rwanda, which is why I was curious about the show. Isn't bad, but it seems to me that the potential has been wasted. The description says it's a thriller, but it looks like the creators have forgotten about it. So in the finale we get a historical series, drama psychology, political fiction, adventure, detective-mystery, romance and melodramas.
They set themselves an ambitious plan to tell viewers about history of Rwanda, genocide, current situation, difficulties in prosecuting criminals and much more. Everything should be connected and at the beginning everything goes great - plot is focuses only on Kate, her mother and her boss, who is family friend.
However, when new characters comes, creators decide to focus on them too - on their ambitions, past, plans and intentions. Their role in a plot for a long time is unknown, so when finaly they try to relate them with main thread, the whole story becomes illogical.
Although some of characters were very close to each other, there was no deep interaction between them or emotion in most dialogues. Also, I don't like idea of using animations. I think it doesn't fit to the atmosphere of the show.
Series would be much better with 5 or 6 episodes, instead of 8. After a gripping beginning around fourth episode, action slows down. The plot begins uninteresting, sometimes incomprehensible, too complicated and thriller turns into a bad drama.
I totally don't understand why screenwriters suddenly decided that everyone would be sick. In several episodes each other vomit, has cancer or other illnesses. Viewers hear about someone treatment or medical visit. But these details don't affect the main topic, characters or action at all! I seriously would like to know what discussion about Eunice Clayton's ovaries and fibroid brought to the story?
Meanwhile other threads have been left unexplained - like that one with a soldier who was shot in a hospital. We don't know who shot him, why and what happened with commander.
Not much is known also about Kate's disease. Looks like screenwriters forget that she has it and reminded at the end. At the start, things look serious, but later (despite serious problems, mother's murder), Kate is doing great. No crying, depression, sadness. What happened? A wonderful recovery?
