Velikaya voyna (2010)
Better than American documentaries?
It presents events in a surprisingly objective way. There is no demonization or belittling of the Germans as is usually the case in American films and film series. Of course, the events are mainly show from a Russian perspective, but we're talking about a Russian series, so that's understandable. The music, the animations, the small but important bits of information and details make it a simply great series. I've watched all the episodes several times and I'm hooked all the way through. Recommended for history fans. I really don't know what else to say about it, it's just really good. Its only fault is that there are no even more episodes.
John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017)
Super boring, overhyped
I like Keanu Reeves and it's not his fault, but this movie is just boring action sequences placed together. A 10 minute fight scene will not be interesting or exciting, just because they're punching at each other for 10 minutes. A 2 min scene can be a better action scene if there's actually suspension and the viewer cares about what's gonna happen.
The plot feels disjointed, merely acting as a vehicle to transition between action set pieces rather than offering a coherent and engaging narrative arc. As a result, the movie feels more like a series of loosely connected action sequences rather than a cohesive whole.
Also there's a lack of memorable characters, especially a villain. A boring guy who just talks in a monotonic way and then does some action is not interesting. Audiences are left wanting more than just intricate action choreography-they crave a villain who has charisma and character.
Imagine if The Matrix wouldn't have an actual story, and it would be just Neo wanting to kill some random dudes because of revenge, and those dudes would be just boring nobodies, it's not fight choreography alone that makes a movie good, it takes more than that. John Wick fails to deliver that.
Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)
Just boring action scenes, not interesting
While the movie undoubtedly delivers in terms of stunt work with breathtaking sequences that push the boundaries of what's physically possible, despite that I can't say that the action scenes are good. Everything is recorded in such a boring monotonous way, the film does not have an exciting style like in the first movie, the story is not interesting. It unfortunately falls short in terms of storytelling and emotional depth, and it's ultimately just boring.
An action scene will not be interesting or exciting just because it has good stunts. For example, the first Mission Impossible movie didn't have such good stunt scenes, but it was still 100X more interesting, because the movie simply had a soul and the action had stakes. Here I had the feeling that I'm not watching a real movie, but a stunt show.
While the film moves at a breakneck pace, it never takes the time to develop a meaningful and engaging story. The plot feels disjointed, merely acting as a vehicle to transition between action set pieces rather than offering a coherent and engaging narrative arc. As a result, the movie feels more like a series of loosely connected action sequences rather than a cohesive whole.
Honestly it's just boring.
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
Ignore the haters
Yes the story is pretty basic it's not the most complex story that was ever put into a film, but there are many excellent movies that can say the same. Titanic has an even more basic story than Avatar 2 and it's still a great movie. Terminator 2 is also one of my favorite movies, and the story is also very basic there, but it still rocks because of the great action scenes and interesting characters. In this movie what matters more and gives it the fun factor is the whole world that they created. If you want to see an interesting and beautifully made world that absorbs the viewer, then this movie is for you. If you want to watch film packed with huge plot twists, then it's probably not. Of course it's not as good as Cameron's The Terminator or T2 but it's an enjoyable movie, and the world they managed to create is filled with so many different creatures and locations is truly remarkable.
As Above, So Below (2014)
Underrated gem
If you like the "found footage" genre of horror movies watch this. It's rare nowadays that a movie can have a scary atmosphere, but this film is actually creepy. The acting is good, and the plot if interesting and unique. The effects are well made, they filmed it in the real Paris catacombs so I believe that's the best thing about it, and that's why it's interesting. It's way better than lot of horror movies nowadays. Really underrated movie. Some people will of course say that it's dumb etc but it's a horror movie, so the plot doesn't have to be too realistic, there is a paranormal element to it, but enough realistic to be interesting,
