To Walk Invisible (2016)
Needed a more experienced director.
Don't get me wrong, this piece is excellent. It's not up to the standard of 'The Brontes of Haworth' but nevertheless is very good.
The only problem I have with it is Wainwright's lacklustre direction. The story drags and plods and almost no screen use is made of the fantastic set they built above Haworth.
The Parsonage is just as much a character as any of the sisters - it shaped them and inspired them as did the moors yet we see very little of it. The set was remarkable - I visited it twice - but is just a background piece. It should have been showcased and would have been had a more experienced director been at the helm.
Maxine (2022)
Not great.
A real story that has enough drama there was no need to fabricate incidents. This is how the millennial generation adapts a story for the 21st century. The writing is formulaic and the direction plodding and unimaginative.
Loses its credibility in the first few minutes with careless mistakes and implausible dialogue.
The actors do their best with the dross they are asked to work with but sadly they struggle.
The script is simplistic and literal. The press are used as a story telling device because the script writer has no faith in their audience to be able to follow the events and interpret the story. They feel the need to explain everything and leave nothing to the intelligence of the viewer. The weird number plates and fake TV channels do little to make this seem like a real story. Don't bother.
Ghosts (2021)
A great adaptation.
This show is brilliant. Yes, of course I compared it to the original when I watched the pilot. And yes, of course I struggled to adapt. But this is a great show. It's very American, of course it is. It's made for the US market. It's humour is different. It is, dare I say it, better than the original. Sharper, funnier and faster moving. Adaptations don't always travel - they made a UK version of Friend called 'Coupling'. It was dire. Not all shows travel but this one does. The UK characters would never have worked in the US so they created relevant ones. They are funny! I love UK Ghosts. I love US Ghosts. Both awesome.
