Smile (V) (2022)
8/10
A perfect horror movie
15 October 2022
Smile is the definition of a perfect horror movie. Constant adrenaline rush. Best jump scared and surprised i've seen in a long time. A good story too considering acting in horror movies tends to be kinda sucky. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. The visual and special effects were great and the lighting, dialogue and soundtrack created an incredibly disturbing and haunting feeling of anxiety and uncertainty the entire time. Really there are not many faults to point out aside from the occasional poor acting but it's easy to overlook as there is so much to appreciate. Worth the watch.

Spider-Man (2002)

A great introduction for the character.

Warning: Spoilers
Although not the best Spiderman film, with some film making techniques having aged poorly, it is still a strong contribution to the Spiderman film hierarchy.

The plot is simplistic, yet well structured and easy to follow with well developed characters who build strong relationships throughout the film. There is no distinct moral to the story but an enjoyable and intriguing storyline with interesting horror elements unique to Raimi's methods of direction. Some visual effects have aged poorly.

Tobey Maguire's performance as Peter Parker is somewhat comic book accurate as the "nerd" role. Kirsten Dunst is at times, unbearable. Her character has an irritating personality that worsens in the sequels. Similarly to Mary Jane Watson, she too needs acting lessons.

The relationship between Norman and Harry is interesting and it is clear that Harry craves affection from his father and it is the driving force of much of his irrational behaviour.

J. K Simmons is perfectly cast and deserved more screen time. His portrayal of JJJ is spot on. He has quite literally leaped off the pages of a comic book.

The movie is full of scenes of well portrayed emotion and centralises around the themes of responsibility, selfishness and revenge.

It is an intelligent and well laid out setup for the protagonist.

Unarguably the best Marvel video game ever produced displaying a perfect depiction of an idealistic marvel universe.

Fantastic array of characters moving through a broad and fascinating storyline with one of the greatest video game soundtracks playing in the background.

It's the nostalgia for me.

Taken (I) (2008)

Underrated

This film is often shrugged at or overlooked, however remains the pinnacle of the saga and a milestone in neeson's career.

A well structured yet simple plot with interesting characters. Neeson's character is both memorable and admirable. His daughter, kim however acts overly immature and gives an unrealistic depiction of a 17 year old girl. Famke janssen's character is well portrayed and is easily despised (as she is meant to be).

The film touches on the serious and controversial topics of human trafficking and drug abuse and at times can be distressing to watch.

The film overall is very well laid out with an intriguing protagonist.

But there was no need to milk out sequels.

Eternals (2021)

Many of the visual effects were good. But that's essentially the only enjoyable aspect of this film as many times i contemplated leaving. The plot is predictable and incredibly uninteresting with a story that lacks structure and constantly changes from flashback to present day, making it difficult to follow. Many characters are 2-dimensional with little to no character development. They are uninteresting and didn't come across as particularly memorable.

There are definitely some good ideas here but the film's dull plot, flat character hierarchy and exhausting and unbearable fight scenes don't allow it to reach its potential.

Lack of connection to greater MCU made the movie feel disconnected from the rest of the universe that it's meant to be based in. This was better done in guardians on the galaxy (2014).

You know a movie is bad when you spend the entire viewing time thinking of a multitude of ways to which it could be improved.
