The Meg (2018)

I've been waiting 21 years for this movie and it was worth it
18 August 2018
I'm a little confused by the hating but have come to realize there are just people who want to hate on something so they stand out in the crowd. Meh, what ev's. I read this book when it first came out in 1997 and have read eagerly all the sequels that followed it. Many times they announce that it was soon to be a major motion picture, or a made for tv movie and so on and every time it fell apart. When I first heard early this year that this was happening I didn't believe it til I saw the first trailer and bounced in my seat in the theater when I saw it finally. People go to these movies thinking it will be something so spiritually uplifting that it will change your life. This and other movies are simply what they are meant to be, a block buster to entertain you and for you to enjoy, nothing more. When you see Transformers, what you are getting is giant space robots kicking other space robots asses. Nothing more. When you go see a shark movie like this, you are getting a shark movie that hopefully will entertain you and you will walk out going that was fun. Was this a full on take of the book? not quite. Was it fairly close, mostly. The actors were fun and the movie was more than enjoyable. Yes there has been some griping recently from actors and the makers saying they wanted to go for a bloodier version but realized in order to be accessible to the masses, they had to tone it down to be PG. When you want to appeal to a broad audience to make money, then you have to unfortunately make some choices. They did and it worked for them as it made more money in it's opening weekend by double than what they predicted. It's fairly hard to make me jump during a movie and this had a couple scenes that made me flinch in surprise so BRAVO for that. I enjoyed it and thought it was a fun summer flick and actually enjoyed the characters and their interactions. I've heard some griping about the Asian actors being put into it to appeal to that demographic, before you say things like that read the source material. That's who they were in the books as well as it does take place in that part of the world. So go with an open mind and expect a fun roller coaster of a ride and know that that's what you will get. This will not be the movie that changes your life, but will make it more fun for a couple hours.

Megalodon (2018 TV Movie)

If I could give it a negative I would

I love my bad shark movies. I love my great shark movies. And I really love my bad great shark movies. Sadly, this movie falls into none of those categories. I will give some credit to a few of the actors for making the best of what they had to work with, but everything else about this was just bad. You don't come to expect much from the Syfy movies when it comes to special effects, but the scene of the Carrier rocking in the ocean looked so poorly done it was just sad. And I've seen many complaints about the lack of military attention paid to this and yeah, gotta agree. There is usually something to enjoy in these movies, maybe a favorite actor chewing up the scenery or such, but we didn't even get that. I feel they spent the majority of their budget paying Michael Madsen to be in it and for all of his maybe 10 minutes, he kinda phoned it in. Sadly, this will NEVER end up in my to buy and watch over and over pile. EVER.

Frenzy (2018 TV Movie)

Shockingly really good for a Syfy movie in their Shark Week lineup
18 August 2018
Every year we look forward to Sharknado and it leads up to the debut with wonderfully awful and sometimes just awful Shark movies. I read the titles for this years lineup and couldn't wait when you see titles like Santa Jaws and 6 Headed Shark attack you know what you are getting. This movie broke those rules and took a real and serious depiction. When a group of on line thrill seeking young adults crash into the ocean they need to fight for survival against sharks. One of the things these shark movies have in common is the very terrible CGI that they use. This movie was very well done with the footage, much better than you expect from the Syfy channel. It was fast and furious and in some ways channeled the desperate desire to survive like Blake Lively in The Shallows. It's no surprise that the characters get picked off 1 at a time, it's to be expected in these situations. I found myself very surprisingly liking this movie a lot.

A new Christmas movie to watch every year (more than once)
18 August 2018
When I first heard the title I laughed so hard and hoped for so much and wondered how this would play out. Now that I've watched it, BRAVO. Yes it's campy and not just campy but full on CAMPY and they ran with it with gusto. Of course there isn't much of a serious plot. You are not meant to watch this kind of movie thinking it will change your world. You are meant to watch it and thrill in all it's glory. And glory indeed. I loved so much about this and can't wait to watch it again and the candy cane? Uh hello, brilliant. Won't say more so it doesn't spoil anything but just brilliant. This will not only be a great shark movie to watch all year but it now makes it's way to the Christmas Horror checklist for every holiday.

Nightmare Shark (2018 TV Movie)
4/10
Could have been so much more
18 August 2018
I was initially excited when I first saw the image released from this that was an homage to Nightmare on Elm Street. I was even more excited when the movie began and realized they pulled actors and their characters from 2 previous Syfy Shark Movies, Trailer Park Shark and Atomic Shark. That was at first a stroke of genius in my opinion. But that's where it ended. The description of this says it's people who survived shark attacks who are hunted by a nightmare manifestation. Except the characters never discuss their previous experiences in the other movies and all allude to the fact that they have suffered nightmares for years that are preventing them from living their lives. I think it would have worked better had they talked about surviving an atomic shark attack and a trailer park shark attack. Then it does get weird in the realm of is it all a dream is it real etc. It was an ok movie but I feel that it could have been so much more.
