Severance (2022)
Nothing new
This show is rather boring. Not because of the actors, photography or direction (although it is a very slow show) but because of what they are trying to convey here.
I confess, I watched the first couple of episodes and then switched to the very last one. I haven't missed much. There were no new characters and you can understand what's going on right away.
So what is the message here? Is there any? Anti-corporate? Anti-capitalism? Distopia? It's all been done before and better than this. But the worst part is something like this have been happening for years and years in real life and nothing have been done about it. Moreover corporations are being praised.
You can start with Theodore Dreiser. The guy who wrote An American Tragedy, The Financier, etc. Then you have Steve Jobs, an absolute ahole of man, praised by the POTUS Obama as "visionary".
It's happeninv in real life right now. Look around yourself. Corporate tenets, corporate gods, non-disclosure agreements - these are quite real.
So this show it's boring as an anti-corporate leaflet made by a corporation.
Vinland Saga (2019)
Despicable characters and excessive violence
I don't think this is an instant classic like some others tend to think. I find this pretentious at best and simply weak at worst.
The characters in this one are unlikable. The vast majority of them. The weakly and cowardly prince/princess, the psycopathic mass murderer Thorfin, cunning and cold blooded selfish hater Askelad, and even the peace loving Trol Thors who is such an unbelievable out of thus world character. The only rare positive characters are probably Thors wife and his daughter and occasional peasants.
Whether this was intentional or not I cannot say but I suppose it doesn't really matter since ths movie has to have at least some positive characters in it. Orherwise it turns into a miserable and uninteresting experience.
Now you can couple this with unnecessary excessive use of violence, needless historical references which get erased by superficial features and convoluted plot.
I want to explicitly menfion violence. There are movies in whuch violence is harsh but it has a purpose. In this particular one I don't the purpose. It's just there.
More than that this movie reminded me of another anime series which was actually pretty good. The Berserker. I think this series was heavily influenced by Berserker.
As an entertainment it's average. As something more than that - it's bad.
The Witcher (2019)
The wrong story
I'm not going to talk about the things that other reviewers have already mentioned - the flawed cast, acting, pace, etc. I'm here to tell you this Witcher is not what Sapkovsky wanted to tell you.
Sapkovsky's Witcher is not about opressed minorities, not about the rights of women, the gays and lesbians and what not.
Sapkovsky's Witcher is about what it means to be a human. His message is completely different from that of the tv show.
If you want to watch some Witcher related content, do yourself a favour and watch anime Claymore. Claymore was obviously inspired by Witcher and I've never seen more brutal and erotic animation than Claymore.
Skip this LGBT stuff.
The Mandalorian (2019)
The same old Tatooine
Started good but gradually turned worse. Standard hollywood cliches all around. You have seen this a thousand times.
Tatooine again? Really? How many planets are there in this galaxy far far away?
Dahufa (2017)
Chinese revolution
I see this movie as an anthem to chinese revolution. The red guy is in the center of the fight against the lying and corrupted capitalistic fake god. The people rebel in the end. The prince is the face of chinese history and its people. Wonderful movie. No wonder it is not popular in the West.
The Expanse (2015)
Game of Thrones in space
This is the space opera you don't want to miss. Forget the dragons, spaceships rule. James Holden is the sci-fi Jon Snow. Seriously, watch this.
True Detective (2014)
Different seasons
Feels different each season. Talking about season 3. It lacks the mysticism and mystery and progression of season 1. Plot is moving forward very slowly. Season 1 had those focal points - like a new body here, a new clue here. Theres only one body in season 3. The only clue that got my attention so far was the letter. Apart from that they start the investigative line and then drop it for no reason. Still good though, could be better.
Wonder Woman (2017)
Women everywhere
Women? Women! Made by women, with women, for women. More women! Yes! Amazons! Women. Yes! Power to the women! Yes! More! Women, Femen, Women. So cool. You got it? I got it! Boring...
