The Little Mermaid (I) (2023)

Should have been so much better.
6 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
OK- the live action remake does expand on some of what the cartoon missed but that barely makes up for everything else. For example- they've added Eric's adoptive mother, the Queen but cut out completely Chef Louis. I did expect, at some point, the Queen to turn out to be Ariel's mother (missed opportunity) but she just worked as a parallel to Triton.

There's not enough characters in this review to list everything wrong with this film but Disney does seem to be running very short of the magic that made decades of excellent films- this isn't one of them.

The one star in a very dull sea was Melissa McCarthy. I'm not her biggest fan but she absolutely nailed Ursula; playing an almost spot on replica of the cartoon version whilst adding her own touches here and there.

I have watched this film twice before reviewing and I can confirm that there won't be a third. It fits unfortunately well in the pile of films alongside Pinocchio, Peter & Wendy, Aladdin, Dumbo and Lady & the Tramp that I have no intention of rewatching. Stick to the animations.

Why am I watching this?

The DVD slipcase artwork is probably the best thing about this film. This film is so bad I'd rather watch the newest incarnation of Ghostbusters and that was an absolute pile of turd that robbed me of 2 hours of my life.
