As Good as It Gets (1997)
Simply Excellent
Of the 900 or so films that I have rated, this film is one of 46 to receive a 9/10 or higher from me. It is serendipitous, laugh-out-loud funny, deeply sad, and painfully relatable. And the best part? It nails all of this while always feeling natural and effortless.
The story follows a depressed gay artist, a single mother with a sick child, and a scrooge with OCD. The plot often seems directionless. But I believe this actually works to the film's benefit, as one's life is rarely clear. Instead, the story takes it's time to organically develop with a pacing that is spot-on. I was captivated from start to finish.
Character growth and plot progression feel truly believable and earned. I would also venture to say that it is one of the most quotable films I have ever seen. Perfectly cast and extraordinarily acted (by multiple characters), "As Good As It Gets" truly is as good as films get.
