The Mandalorian: Chapter 24: The Return (2023)
Underwhelming ending to an underwhelming season.
This episode is not necessarily bad, but it's neither good. The writing keeps on being mediocre at best. Just a lot of generic action, low stakes, and by the end credits, it really feels like nothing was accomplished at the end of this journey. What was accomplished, feels meaningless. Nothing is set up for the future of this show, or the ones connect to it, such as Ahsoka. The villain ends up being a generic, forgettable villain, defeated by the most generic thropes (those being the power of friendship and unity). Again, none of this directly translates into a bad show. But is Star Wars really supposed to feel this meaningless?
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)
Disappointing in almost every way
There's a trace of a good movie somewhere in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Immediately, the movie focalizes on the loss of Chadwick Boseman, and pays homage to him through a distressing yet powerful sequence. Then the actual movie starts, and it gets mediocre pretty quickly. To my memory, the MCU has never been more dull, more visually boring: the cinematography didn't give us the grandiosity we were expecting from a movie touching the death of a beloved actor, the discovery of a new and misterious civilization. It all feels and looks flavorless, rushed and disjointed. Despite the massive space in narration that is given to exposition, we get never really acquainted with the reign of Talocan and its tradition, and the explanation on why the conflict arises never feels believable or justified. Where the movie is best at is at paying homage to the late Boseman, giving us some thoughtful reflections on the tragedy of the death of a dear one, and how we can grow in a difficult situation such as this one. Unfortunately, the rest of the movies shies away from this somber tone, and prefers to get back to the usual, predictable (tiresome?) Marvel formula.
Drag Race Italia: Snatch Game (2022)
Surprising quality
The cast of this season keeps on surprising! The reading challenge was entertaining, but that Snatch Game was simply incredible. It feels improper to say that anyone bombed: more correctly, some of them were so good, outshining them was no easy task. The runway was the cherry on top, some of those outfits have become my favorites of the whole Drag Race franchise. Now, for the negative parts: the judging keeps on being questionable: the winner deserved her win, but I'm not sure she was the best of the challenge. The episode, as usual, was too long, and the editing (especially the sound editing) can definitely be improved.
