Dumb Money (2023)
Reminded Me Why I Hate Reddit So Much
This movie was really stupid. Nothing but a bunch of internet idiots acting like childish dummies in an effort to blindly follow a meme.
Diamond Hands! I like the Stock! HODL!! The Tendieman!!
A bunch of losers in cat clothing knowingly acting like children. The most staunch of which end up losing just about everything because they won't get out when the getting is good because they want to keep "being a part of something" and riding the meme.
Diamond hands, even if it means negative bank accounts.
They also managed to destroy a small hedge fund just for the sin of betting on a bad stock and then they acted like it was some kind of epic win against Wall Street or a grand moral victory.
The Umbrella Academy (2019)
Could Have Been Good
It's just more liberal propaganda concerning social politics masquerading as a TV show. All they really talk about is sexism, racism and LGBTQ stuff. There's not much that goes on in the show, esp in season 2 that don't revolve around these issues. They even take it back to the 60s so they can use the politics of the time period to legitimize these issues. It's pandering and pathetic.
Hannibal (2013)
Missed the Mark, Unfortunately.
Despite my hopes, dreams and wishes for this show, it's quite mediocre. I'll address the big four: Casting, Acting, Writing and Direction.
Direction: Mechanically, there is nothing wrong with this series. It's shot well and the direction seems to be fine. I wish the other three areas had fared as well.
Casting: The casting could use some work. Alana Bloom, Katz, the forensic tech and Garret Jacob Hobb's daughter were all pretty poor casts. They don't look their parts, they're not particularly good actresses and they detract from the show more than they add to it.
Acting: Most of the actors in the show do decent enough work. Some of them do not. Alana Bloom is too emotional, irrational and unprofessional to be believable as a psychiatrist. GJH's daughter constantly uses asymmetrical facial expressions, which are fake. Other than contempt and, perhaps, puzzlement, there are no genuine facial expressions that are asymmetrical, certainly not fear, which she, unfortunately, thinks should be an asymmetrical expression. Katz's character doesn't make any sense. I will cover that more in the writing section, but the actress that plays her isn't believable in the role. She doesn't look or behave like she's in a scientific field or a member of the FBI. The rest of the acting in the show is fairly decent and even very good when it comes to the rest of the cast, particularly, the veteran actors.
Writing: This is the biggest flaw in the show. The show should have been centered on Hannibal and his killing. It's not. Instead it centers around Will, who's a nobody and isn't particularly likeable as a character, and his mental illness. Making mental illness the main conflict in a TV series is always a mistake bc people don't want to see some person struggle with hallucinations or internal demons. It doesn't translate well to film. Ever. People want to see Will do his job and they want to see how the cunning FBI catches equally cunning serial killers. As a result, most of the show's plot is tedious and dragging nonsense that quickly becomes tiresome. Poor, poor decision making when it comes to the writing in this show. When it comes to characters like Dr. Bloom and Katz, the forensic tech, they are often involved in work that has nothing to do with their professions. Bloom is constantly blurring the lines between personal and professional relationships which is fairly unrealistic. She's also overly emotional, irrational and unprofessional. Her character is difficult to believe as a psychologist. As far as Katz, she frequently wears more makeup than any forensic tech should wear to work, is constantly making irritating little jokes and often shows up to places she's not needed and operates beyond the capacity as a forensic tech. It's like the show doesn't know who she is. The same way that Will is sometimes just working with the FBI as a consultant, sometimes is a teacher at the FBI academy and sometimes is a special agent for the FBI. There's not a lot of consistency in these characters and they're often appearing in roles and taking on duties that a person in their position would not. That being said, nothing detracts from the show more than the sob, pity drama surrounding Will and whether or not he's crazy. It's tedious, it's boring and it's dragged out for far too long. The show is called Hannibal, it should center on him, his murders and the cat and mouse game with the authorities. Instead, this would be like calling the show 'Micheal Meyers' and then focusing on Laurie Strode and whether or not her experiences have damaged her psychologically. No one with even half a brain would care about that story and no one with even a quarter of a brain is going to care about this one bc of the terrible writing choices. That's too bad.
Car Masters: Rust to Riches (2018)
They do low quality work
Title says it all. I really lost respect for them when they did the life size hotwheels car, Splitting Image. They basically just threw a body kit they made themselves out of fiberglass on a Corvette Chasis. No headlights, no turn signals and the dual canopy? Forget about it, total piece of crap, not even air tight, even when it's closed it has spaces between the canopy and body big enough to push a golf ball through. I would be worried about taking that car anywhere over 40 MPH bc if the canopy didn't straight up fly away then the sound of the wind whistling through all the gaps would drive me crazy. Really felt bad for the guy that made that POS for. He didn't like it, either. Terrible work.
Also, they have a woman named Constance in the shop. Idk if they just keep her around for eye candy or to draw in the woman power crowd, but they try to market her as an engine expert. That can be a little annoying bc they never really show her doing any serious work and she has the cleanest hands and clothes that I've ever seen on a mechanic, esp someone that's messing with an engine. It's all a little phony. Also, I don't care for people who aren't serious about their jobs and she seems to always be posing, like the whole show is just another day on Instagram for her. Again, it's just really phony.
Zumbo's Just Desserts (2016)
It was ok.
Season 1 got a little rough for me in a few areas, like I got a little tired of the Gap-Toothed assistant shouting out things like 'Only 15 Minutes Left, C'mon, Guys!! Push, Push, Push!!' Idk why they chose to show her doing that about every 60 sec or so during a challenge, but it got really old. She sounded like a high school football coach and it constantly had me wondering "What is it that you think they're doing so slowly? You think they can make the oven bake faster?"
The bigger let down for me were the contestants. I just got tired of a few of them. Esp one of them that would act really oddly and totally give up whenever she made a mistake. She would whine and cry. Got real tired of it. There were other annoying contestants, but it's hard to put into words why they bothered me other than I got tired of the things they said and the faces they made.
Lastly, I know it's in Australia, but I got a little tired of the British English. I thought it was a decent enough show, but I had a real hard time getting through the last few episodes in season 1.
I hope they revamp the show in some way to make it slightly more enjoyable and I hope they give Gigi a little less screen time when it comes to her shouting out where the timer is at.
100 Humans (2020)
Hosts are Unbearable
I thought this show would be a fun watch, unfortunately, the hosts act like they're hosting a children's cartoon and they push liberal politics a little too much for my liking. Would have been much better with non-political hosts that didn't act like they were making a youtube video for 12 year olds.
Narcos (2015)
Not Bad, but A little Full of Itself
I had a good time watching this story, it wasn't bad, but it did get a little tedious at times in that the DEA narrator often labeled themselves as the good guys and the narcos as the bad guys and, as a result, everything the narcos did was infinitely evil and everything the DEA did, even if it was cold blooded murder was a good thing, or, at least, something that had to be done for the common good.
This is a pervasive problem in our society and it was hard to watch it happen on screen at times. Often, rather than make any attempt to bring the narcos to justice, the local police and the DEA would murder the narcos, even when the criminal did not pose a threat. They justify this by saying that the narcos are evil and they deserve it, but that's not up to the police or DEA to decide. We live in a society, after all. Conversely, everything the narcos did, even by mistake, was absolutely calculated and pure evil. For example, in one episode the narcos botch an assassination attempt that leaves a lot of innocent people dead and the narrator labeled Pablo as a terrorist. However, Pablo didn't intend to kill all the innocent people, he intended to kill one man and he didn't have a particular political message he was trying to get across, which means he's not a terrorist despite all the collateral damage.
Other than this kind of political horse crap, the show wasn't too bad. However, it does get a little hard to tell which side are the good and which side are the bad guys. By the end, I became convinced that both sides were bad and Columbia and the world would be better off without both the Narcos and The police/dea force. Both sides were populated by trigger happy cowboys that had a blatant disregard for human lives except when the other side was taking them. Then it's time to point fingers and talk about how evil it is when the opposing force takes a life, but how necessary and unfortunate it was when the home team was the one out there snuffing out people with reckless abandon.
Blown Away (2019)
Started Off Great
The show was a pretty standard competition show, unique in that it's about glass blowing. It was entertaining and fun to watch until the last few episodes where it all devolved into sexist trash. Turns out one of the contestants was a major sexist, something that's revealed fairly early on, and one of the judges is majorly into sexism as well. By the end, they develop some kind of sexist bond that gets increasingly nauseating to watch.
I would love to see a second season, but I would prefer that it was with contestants who aren't going to make their work all about their gender or race or anything like that. I would also like to see judges that would punish rather than reward people for sticking to such shallow material.
SparkShorts: Purl (2018)
Sexist, Hypocritical and Unrealistic
If there was a company like BRO Capital, it would be destroyed in social media and may even be charged with a crime or two.
What this film IS a good depiction of is how quick most liberals are to revert to racism and sexism themselves in order to support their own idiotic fantasies surrounding gender politics. For example ... Is it better to stereotype every single male in the cartoon as being a white frat boy with identical hair cuts and suits just to complain that women are disadvantaged in the workplace? Even when they're not? This cartoon is at least 50 years too late for the corny political message it's trying to sell and equality isn't about trashing white guys, it's about putting everyone on the same level, no one being disadvantaged or put on a pedestal. Unfortunately this film bags on men just to shine a light on women. Something that probably won't be looked favorably upon in the future. Sexism is sexism and racism is racism, after all, no matter who is the target of the stereotypes.
Kind of reminds of how Google got sued for paying women more than men in order to prove that they don't have a wage gap at their company. They also got sued for giving sign-on bonuses to minorities in an effort to create more racial diversity among their employees. This is a lot like that. A myopic, bigoted and misguided effort by liberal media to cater to the teenage voices they hear on social media. Voices that know and understand very little about the real world around them as opposed to the social media fantasy world that they overindulge in on a daily basis.
Lost in Space (2018)
It's Another Bland Reboot.
Bad casting, bad acting, bad writing. That pretty much sums it up. The writer of this one made a series of poor decisions when composing the screenplay and the show never recovered from them. Lost in Space is basically 'The Swiss Family Robinson', but in space. It's a story of persevering through adversity and survival. However, in this version, it's more of a family drama about why a family hates the father and how they learned to get over it. Could have taken place anywhere, didn't need to be in space.
Too much of the conflict in this show is internal rather than external, which makes for a terrible survival show and turns what could have been a great experience into a mediocre melodrama. Also, I don't mean to nit-pick, but space shows should be intelligent and scientific. Anyone with a passing knowledge of space or physics will quickly realize that the writer of this show doesn't understand very much about either one, unfortunately.
In the second season, the writers apparently tried to add more science into the first two episodes, but it was 7th Grade level Earth Science dealing with such concepts as 'what makes things float in water?' and 'How does lightning work?' Things that the Robinson family should already well know if they're supposed to be astronauts. The writing in this season, remarkably, takes a sharp nose dive from the first, something I didn't think was even possible, and the character's IQ levels drop lower than my expectations of the series.
If you're brave or masochistic enough to make it to the end, you will surely find yourself asking 'How in the hell did this get made in to a TV show?' I honestly can't believe that this got the green light from Netflix and no one along the way stopped to say 'Hey ... this doesn't make any sense at all.'
Glow Up: Britain's Next Make-Up Star (2019)
Couldn't get through the first episode
It's really hard to sit through this show. The contestants all seem to have the worst cockney-style british accents, it's like nails on a chalkboard to me in how uneducated they sound. To make matters worse, the content of their speech makes them sound like social media morons. To add on to that is the fact that in the first challenge, all of them chose looks that were virtually identical and none of them specifically conveyed the idea of rebellion, rebels or a rebellious person, which was the challenge. The winner of that challenge got their work published in a magazine. What a waste of paper, what a waste of time.
It's too bad bc I normally like these types of shows, but this one was just awful. A further disappointment was that the show was supposed to feature advanced-level makeup artists and when they were going through the bios and backgrounds, it was clear the majority of these people have little or no experience doing actual makeup other than facepainting for youtube. Talk about a dumpster fire.
Citizenfour (2014)
Good Content, But Poorly Executed
The documentary was interesting and somewhat shocking, which is good for me, but I think the way the information was conveyed will be hard for most people to understand. Also, there are a lot of pointless scenes that seem like pure filler and character building moments. This isn't a movie, it's a documentary, Laura Poitras.
Speaking of Laura Poitras, it was incredibly annoying and a little confusing that she never introduced herself during the film and insisted on narrating it in first person, anyway. Still, pretty good for someone who's never directed a documentary before, if that is the case. I'm assuming it is bc that's what the evidence suggests.
