Castle (2009)
If you're looking for fun, look no further...
Castle is exactly what I need after the stress of a hard day. Nathan Fillion is perfect as Richard Castle, mystery writer and rogue. His humor is what makes this show work so well. His relationship with Detective Kate Beckett has a real sense of playful intrigue.
As for the other characters, only the mom is kind of annoying and cost one star out of the rating. The others aren't deep, but they don't detract (although I have to say it; why does almost every cop show in the last 20 years a black or Hispanic sergeant or captain? I'm certainly not against it, it's just so stereotypical).
For a murder mystery, this is light fare. But that's very intentional. I don't think I've seen an episode yet where I didn't laugh at least once. If you're looking for fun escapism, this is the one.
And if you're a fan of Firefly, it's like a lighter side of Malcolm Reynolds. I'm convinced now that Mal and Rick really are part of Nathan Fillion. This show is a winner!
The Privileged Planet (2004)
Great perspective on Earth's uniqueness
This film does a nice job of providing evidence that the Earth/Universe is not necessarily a random accident. The whole point of this DVD (and others like it) is to provide alternate viewpoints for people who believe that everything we experience and see in life is the result of accident and blind forces. It presents that perspective in a very non-offensive (to people who tend to react negatively to this type of thing) way. You are allowed to draw your own conclusions.
The authors clearly believe in Intelligent Design. The question for anyone watching is "Based on what I've seen, is it possible that perspective is true, or at least has some merit." If so, you should go on to examine other, similar DVDs (check out Lee Strobel). For full disclosure, I do believe in Intelligent Design (after reading about the matter for a couple of years). I think it takes a lot more 'faith' to believe that all the universe and life is the result of 'accidents' that have odds so impossibly remote, you'd never accept them if it were a different subject. I highly recommend this.
