Related (2005–2006)
Give it a chance
20 October 2005
I, too, thought very little of "Related" when I watched the first episode, but the 2nd and 3rd episodes were a lot better, with funnier dialogue and more interesting story lines, and since then, the show has become one of my favorites. Lizzy Caplan (who played Lindsay Lohan's Gothic best friend in "Mean Girls" - and I actually like her better in this) is hysterical, hostile and vulnerable all at once, and I think her career is going to take off. There is something very real about her, and she reminds me of Kate Winslet. She's the reason I kept watching after the first few episodes.

The other sisters have risen to the task as well. The greatest transformation has been Jennifer Esposito, who at first appeared to be whining too much. However, over the season, this capable actress has developed a convincing, dynamic character. She is now balancing her comedy with the dramatic skill that earned her well-deserved kudos in "Crash".

This show speaks to me for the same reason that Gilmore Girls garnered my viewership for the past six years. It is a show for and about intelligent, well-rounded, flawed (human!) women. Sex is dealt with honestly but not exploitatively, and the characters dress like real women rather than MTV pinup girls. The problems they encounter resonate with us, from wanting to fit in during college, to trying to figure out what to do once thrust into the "real world", to dealing with painful breakups, to learning the painful lesson that it takes more than love to make a marriage work. And perhaps we all have a bit of each of the characters within us. They have the power to remind us of ourselves as well as occasionally give us insight into some of the other women we know.

I hope that the new CW network will realize as I did that "Related" can fill a TV-void that many female viewers may not have realized that they had.

Now they just need to keep working on getting the background music right...

I Fell in Love with this Movie
22 September 2005
Mark Ruffalo and Reese Witherspoon, and for that matter, the rest of the cast (especially Jon Heder) are absolutely mesmerizing in this spellbinding romance. I went into the theater fully prepared to find the movie cheesy. It wasn't. Why? Because Reese Witherspoon's performance was very believable, and she's as likable as ever. Most significantly, though, Mark Ruffalo blew me away once again with his ability to "act" like he's in love without making it look like an act at all. The effectiveness of his romance with Witherspoon's character transcended chemistry. He made the audience (at least me) totally believe that he was absolutely, authentically, deeply in love.

I can't remember the last time I saw a movie that elicited so many emotions. The film was engaging from the very beginning, and it only got better as time went on. This is the perfect date movie, particularly for couples that are already in love. "Just Like Heaven" was truly a heavenly experience. I am looking forward to seeing it again and again on the big screen! 10 stars!

A great ride!
6 August 2005
This movie was awesome. The pacing was great...it never dragged. Also, it was hilarious, and the car scenes were a lot of fun. Very much stayed true to the "Dukes of Hazzard" series I remembered, and it's always a pleasure to see Willie Nelson on screen.

I heard that one of the original cast members complained about the movie being too sexual. Yes, it is sexual, but so was the original! It was never the "family" show that people are claiming it once was. Also, the cast member who made that comment was later revealed to have auditioned for the movie and been turned down, so take what he said with a grain of salt.

If you want deep drama, don't see this movie. But if you want to have a great time and don't take yourself too seriously, this flick's for you!
