Odd Squad (2014)
A fun and entertaining way to learn maths
As a teacher in training I find this show really exciting for learning. While it is educational it's actually really entertaining. It's humour is actually quite sophisticated and there are some laughs for adults too. The quirky characters are very well developed and the writing quite clever.I think the children will really connect with the characters and be absorbed by the story. The crazy situations are great for children. Plus the clever humor is great for parents and older siblings. So while it is a maths show it is quite entertaining. From an educational point of view I can see its potential as an introduction to mathematical concepts to children and I can see how lessons can be drawn from the episodes. I may even consider using some episodes myself! So I give it a big thumbs up from both a viewer's and an educational perspective.
Paper Planes (2014)
Nice, light and poignant story.
It was lovely to encounter this movie. For once it was a nice light film without the intensity even a lot of family films are these days. While it was light it was just poignant enough to make it interesting. I liked the anti-bullying message in it as well. Sam Worthington was excellent as a father struggling with depression after the death of his wife. Young Oxenbould did a good job as well. The scenes in Japan were idyllic and the whole film had a kind of magical feel. This is a good film to watch with the family or if you are in the mood for a pleasant non -jarring film.
I enjoyed the real yet slightly surreal atmosphere of the movie as well. It was realist and yet with a touch of magic realism as well. Overall a good Aussie family film!
Tomorrow, When the War Began (2016)
Well done but lots of changes
Warning may contain some spoilers:If I hadn't read the books I would probably be loving this series. It is well made and I love Deborah Mailman. However I did read the books and feel disappointed at the changes. Following the parents really goes against the point of the book which is showing what young people can do. John Marsden wrote the books to show the potential of young people. Small changes are fine but they have changed a lot and are into events of book two and haven't blown up the bridge which is a major plot development! I do like the music and film style however. I understand budget could be an issue. I will keep watching however as I loved the books.
