The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Show intends for you to like it several seasons in, so come back in a few years
Has a distinct lack of ambition with the narrative, what do they want to accomplish with it? There are multiple storylines that are sort of just there to kill time, what's the actual plot of the show? Why won't they tell us?
So many characters at once, when their scenes get interesting the show moves on to other storylines.
The first season doesn't have a self contained story, meaning that the happiest viewer will be the one who has the most amounts of seasons available.
Show does a lot of smoke and mirrors with name-dropping, playing on expectations, but don't really pay them off, and ultimately, travel the obvious routes. Failing to tell compelling new stories, I'm left to question once again what motives and plot they have going on. None of these new stories travel outside of cliche territory or expected outcomes. Considering the nature of this show and the investment, it needed a better script.
Highlights of the show are the Hobbit harmonic nature and the dwarven humour. Best character is Elrond. Sadly, new characters* (*in cinematic adaptation) such as Gil Galad and Celebrimbor weren't given enough time while characters we do see more of are mostly just building up their storylines for future seasons which makes this a very questionable and unfulfilling first season.
