When I compare how 42 year old Anders Holm as Bill Randa looked in 1962 in episode 8 with 71 year old John Goodman as the same character in 1973 (episode 1)...well that must have been a rough 11 years for poor Bill Randa. I guess losing the people you love most in the world and hunting kaiju alone will run you down.

This episode held my interest more than the last few. A lot less about dull, two dimensional, mopey twenty-somethings wandering from place to place complaining about their personal problems, and a lot more cool monster action and people running for their lives. Some nice surprises and effects.

I wasn't sure I was going to stick with this show until the last episode, but now I just might. Having said that, most of the series has been repetitive and boring as heck.

I've been watching Star Trek since the 60s and I'm mainly familiar with the original series. It was a wildly erratic show, some episodes were timeless examples of god sci fi, others were shockingly bad. The original series tried to do so many different things, but the core value of the show was in the character interplay and the wide ranging exploration of ideas. Every now and then they would drop a purely silly episode just to have fun with the characters (Shore Leave, I Mudd, A Piece of the Action, The Trouble With Tribbles, This Side of Paradise, etc), and this episode is in that vein.

I appreciate that Strange New Worlds seems to be honouring the many different sides of the original series.

I liked this episode. I got some laughs from Spock's performance.

I'm big fan of the show, and I can honestly say I've loved every episode of the first two seasons, so it pains me to say that this episode fell completely flat. Not sure what happened behind the scenes, but the writing was just nowhere near the previous standards. Pretty much every joke fell flat and the pacing as a result felt limp. Things picked up a bit during the scene with Roy's niece, and for a few minutes the show felt like its old self again. I will not be at all surprised when it turns out many fans love this episode, and in fact I will be very happy for those people whose love for the show is reaffirmed by its return, but for myself I can only pray it improves.

Kudos to the actors for giving it their all.

I like a good split personality/amnesiac yarn as much as the next guy, but this show spins its wheels to an annoying degree.

Especially when confronted by overwhelming odds and imminent death, Steven's prolonged refusals to allow Marc to step in and take care of the threats always end up feeling forced and lack credibility.

Do I wish it were better? Of course.

Could it be worse? Definitely.

Am I annoyed Ruby Rose is in it? Always.

Considering that all shark movies are disappointing cheap thrills compared to the pure rush of Jaws, fans have to take what we can get. This is definitely more in the vein of silly big budget fun like Deep Blue Sea, but with a lighter comedic touch, and of course a bigger shark.

Since I was a kid I've wanted to see a tiny submersible being chased by a megalodon, and this movie has that, so I'm happy.
