well written characters in a bland, but familiar story
23 January 2023
Kinda expected more which is not at all a good thing to say about a movie, but this one has bland all mixed with nice, soothing and timeless.

It shows us what the world is like from the prespective of a chaotic, innocent boy that doesn't understand some basic principles in life yet, and tries to grasp upon everything that life presents him with. It's a nice, calming, not too dramatic film that will show you forgotten emotions you experienced as a young child and will leave you reminiscing. But in a good way. Its soothing, reasuring tone even in moments when chaos breaks loose keeps the emotions shown by the performers just as much as they should be.

The social issues that are given in the movie are shown well and will make you feel understanding and sympathy for both the boys in the movie. The issues make you remeber how meeting your own life problems for the first time was, and will make you remember some of your childhood feelings and memories. The characters give you a better understanding of the time, the situation and the reasons behind the boys' feelings and actions.

This is a movie that hits close to home, for those who recognise similar situations in their life. The situations like suddenly having to grow up and be responsible as well as having to understand things you didn't want to understand or face yet.

The story seems short, or lacking some details for more clarity or more interesting bits to get more attention, but is well written and reminds of movies without a distinctive point beyond "certain moments in life that you will forever cherish and remember" and so you, in this movie, see a moment of someone else's life, and you might like it as well as i did or you might not. I guess it depends on the personal preferences and your own childhood as well.

Calming. A touching, familiar, yet somehow irritating story about a young boy growing up. Seems like i've already seen this film. Little miss sunshine vibes? Just a bit older i guess. And a bit more politics, social issues and no hard comedy really. So drama does sum it up well. A life drama, and a really good "back home" vibe with it.

ralph is the only reason the movie is bearable

Warning: Spoilers
Starting with the attempt to create improvised chaotic evil, over shallow and bland characters, a lame attempt to show spaces well in a nice aesthetic-like way (failing completely, except when meals are presented, a good 7/10 for that), a few loose ends and arriving at the anticlimactic ending, the movie fails to entertain as much as it could.

The vibe of the film promises more but delivers poorly, accompanied by unconvincing elements and just poorly placed, awful music.

I understand the concept behind the story, behind what goes on in the film and why things happen in the ways they do, but there are no real connections between the characters and the main concept and idea of the story, so the viewer must just assume things, and there is no beauty in assuming the motive for such an important feature of the film. Understanding that the rich and priviledged are the burden of our society is one thing, but I cannot understand how such a story where this notion is just hinted at is suddenly a genius film. Seems to me that this might be an attempt to do things other stories with similar notions like American Psycho have done, where one can actualy understand the satire and not have to pretend that one must be a genius to get it. This movie fails to reach anything by hiding its point behind poorly planned chaos and pretend deep thoughts.

It's like if in a murder mystery the killer was revealed to be the rich guy who killed everyone only because he hated the rich? A good satire moment, sure, but no backstory, no real narrative. Only Anya Taylor Joy devouring a hamburger, while entering her punk phase, not caring about all those filthy rich people that died, because she is not one of them. Wow. Such a satirical moment. Not fun, not funny, just confusing and unnecessary.

The connections between the characters are so weak that it seems as if someone had cut a large part of the movie out, since we never get to know any of the characters better and the mystery vibe is just lost. And if the viewer was never supposed to know the characters well, why the effort to present them as much as they were?

Seems to me like a poor attempt to point out the issues of our society, with nothing else remotely good about the writing or the idea behind the movie. The storyline is wonky and has loose ends and just disappoints.

But Ralph impresses with his accurate and spot on performance, and it looks like he does it with ease, and there is no doubt that he is one of the best in the industry. Remarkable. The other actors present their poorly written characters well. Sometimes too well, but other times unconvincingly due to the nature of the characters.

A disappointment, a pity.

A low effort Gone Girl?
3 October 2022
The style and mood reminds of Fincher's movie Gone Girl. However, the characters lack what Gilian Flynn did to them. They seem to have been made effortlessly, just for the sake of the erotic/psycho side of the movie (which is why it reminds of Gone Girl).

The characters are shallow and the story didn't allow the viewers to get to know all the friends of the main characters well, showing a weak background to anything happening, making the set look very artificial and dry.

The story just kept on repeating itself, and kept on boring me. This was a letdown, especially because I was happy to finally see Ben Affleck show a tiny difference from the usual character he plays in many other movies (as the Batman, Gone Girl, Argo, The Town) that all seem way too similar. I hoped to see more different performances from him. Ana's performance also did not seem very convincing and other than watching the movie for the softcore porn theme it's in, there is nothing else fun to see. There are no good life philosophy hooks either, to at least say that the movie may have had some well written conversations.

It seemed way too cheesy and was definitely not my cup of tea. I will assume that one part of the audience will agree, and another might not, but it depends on what you are looking for in a movie. The thrilling story and many unfinished plot points are in such a contradiction, that the movie loses all its fun. Sad to see such great potential with an interesting idea and sound actors go to waste.

Short and thrilling
9 January 2022
A movie probably worth watching if you're into thrillers. A classic thrilling, tense and semi-unpredictable story.

The storyline is fun, has great twists and intense moments that have you stick to the end of the movie. It shows some predictable elements that don't ruin the movie experience.

The acting is unconvincing at moments, and the general idea of the movie is too. The story is a bit cringy if looked at closely. This, however, doesn't make the movie unwatchable, but just gives a discomforting feel to it at moments.

The characters are shallow, which is suitable to the length of the movie, and the villains don't come along with much explanation to them. Still, the interpretation of the characters by the actors is not great.

The cinematography is suitable to the year of the making. Nothing too surprising, with elements trying to show the "chaos" of the movie more closely, that often fail to do so. Not very impressed, and very much expected from a movie made in 2002.

The general feel of the movie is fine, with an engaging sorry due to the thrilling events. However, there is nothing to hang on to when it comes to certain events to actually remember after seeing the movie. The characters are also quite expendable and shallow, as mentioned.

I do recommend this movie if you're looking for a thrilling, dramatic story, but not if you're looking for action or drama, as this is a shallow story with a lot of potential. The movie is quite short, running for around 81 minutes, which is why you might be attracted to it, it needs no concentration to watch and is simple and short.

6.5/10.

An ok adolescent movie
8 January 2022
I'm not a fan of teen romance movies and such, and this movie also failed to impress me. It turned out to be a plain, cringy and uninteresting adaptation. One should probably stick to the book.

The cameos didn't help with making the story better at all, which was expected, and one could argue that the movie has no specific point, despite having deep realistic family and friends relationships presented.

The characters go through almost no change and the acting is quite inconsistent, due to many scenes involving alcohol intoxicated characters, but still no growth or change can be seen. Not much work done on the characters.

The story is quite plain, despite some unexpected turns, but it all in all fails to engage with the viewers and have them relate to some characters well enough. The acting is not very convinsing at moments and lacks better chemistry between the actor and character they are playing. Maybe someone else could have done a better job?

The cinematography and colour palletes are fun and interesting, but lack a better cohesion with the story and feelings of characters.

Still, it shows some sweet moments and fun events, as well as a romantic relationship between adolescents, which shows to be enough to attract viewers. The story is full of emotions but it isn't great at bringing it closer to all viewers, which is why I was disappointed.

Still, could prove to be life-changing to some young adults and teens due to some clever quotes and wrong interpretations of lifestyles.

A decent 5.5/10. I don't really recommend this movie if you're searching for a rom-com, an actual comedy, something to cry to or a motivational movie. This is only for when you really can't find anything else and you're searching for a teen/adolescent lifestyle movie. Not even a romance.

something we all see every day
6 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It took me quite a while to see this movie, yet I am now angry for not seeing it earlier.

In a rather confusing, elegant and realistic thriller, Hopkins manages to prove why he really is worthy of another Oscar, as his spot-on performance makes this story hit hard on many who have experienced it.

While watching, I asked myself about what the actual plot was and what the point of the movie was: to be honest, I still cannot say that there is a specific story behind the movie, it just so perfectly shows a picture of any family that could be dealing with such a condition of a person and extends the story so that the viewer can feel what real people usually do.

It hits hard. Shows a realistic and colourful world of everydayness, presents the characters rather stiffly but also shallow at moments.

Entertaining, yet not for people who don't like life stories with bad endings, I'd say. Full of emotions, symbols and life and death contrasts.

Worth rewatching and enjoying the masterful acting of Hopkins again.

The most important piece of this story is that it is real and happening in millions of different places, to millions of different people, which is why it is done so well. A splendid movie, with even better acting and interpretation of characters.

Majestic.

Very loveable and inspiring
14 October 2021
An incredibly well told story with a great inspirational point on life. The story is in some points a little bland and repetitive, but is nonetheless nice and interesting.

The performances were very good, the story was touchy, but something certainly looked boring even with such good acting.

A movie worth your time for the good quotes and laughter. I recommend watching it!

Not too bad, but missing much to be better.

Expectedly decent, but no surprises
13 October 2021
The movie's key components largely rely on knowledge on previous films, and the connections between are worryingly blurry and rather boring yet again.

The new twists are rather interesting, but lack the original 007 action soul that it used to have. Had my hopes up that the movies would get more interesting and engaging storyline when Casino Royale was released, but the entire story just became boring and repetitive with this film.

The beginning is indeed long, but also very engaging and fun to watch. The animated intro and song didn't match the movie in my opinion, but still served right.

The plot of the movie and main villain are yet again pulled out of the bottom of a pitless hole with new caracters that hate on Bond, and have an uninteresting, almost familiar and expected story behind them, making this movie very boring when scenes that contained the villain plain and dull.

The comedic parts, small details and all other elements of the movie, that make the movie a 007 movie are all perfectly delivered and make the movie watchable.

The ending of the movie was very satisfying and well delivered.

The movie deserves a higher rating only because of the grandiocity and elegance of the whole plot. The movie just barely has a Bond-like feeling, still managed to deliver better than some other Craig Bond movies, but was very shallow in story. Still managed to turn out good in the franchise and show that a single movie doesn't have to be as bad as a previous one.

Expectedly decent, but no surprises.

Amelia (2009)

A bit bland
28 May 2021
The movie was not much of an biography of Amelia, as it was of the most important flights that she took, so many elements were missing that would make the film more adventurous and thrilling. Nevertheless, it sent the message that it was most probably supposed to send. A bit bland because many events had no particular.outcome, not because of her life story, but because of how the film was paced and created. It had much more potential, but turned out to be rather dissapointing and bland. Could see it done much better, but is a decent documentary because of the well told story.
