Striptease (1996)

Not one of Demi's better roles. Her fake boobs look as fake as the plot.

Save yourself the time, this was nearly unwatchable. I skipped through it because it was intolerably boring but if all you're interested in watching is nearly nude women being leered at by sleeze bag men, this movie will be a treat for you!

-10 is too high a score...
6 April 2021
As others have said the first few seconds seem promising and that's It. I've watched a lot of poor material hoping things might improve, but this was the worst movie I've ever watched. Literally. The entire thing is just ridiculous. It's boring, plotless and despite Ema Horvath's noteworthy acting skills, a total waste of time.

Seemed like it could be interesting, but wasn't.

Past the first five minutes, it was almost ridiculous. I'm shocked that it got any reviews over four stars. Love the reviewer that said, "The performances some describe as "flat", but I would call "understated" . Call them whatever but they were not good. There was not a single character developed enough to care about, nor any performance that could save this "understated" script.

A Beautiful sensitive,"coming Of Age Film Sabotaged By The Power Of Suggestion Due to the redesign of the French promo poster by Netflix
20 September 2020
CUTIES is an award winning movie for a REASON. If you have not watched it don't be hating on it!

Due to Netflix re-design of the movie poster, This movie is being vilified as Kiddie Porn. Nothing could be further from the truth. (But it does serve as the perfect example of the power of suggestion, without context, that we see so much of today, particularly in the political war between the Left and the Right) Still, I must admit being grateful for the controversy, as I would have dismissed this movie as just another cute "coming of age" chick flick.

It's actually a brilliant, sensitive and moving portrayal of a young girl struggling to build a self image that falls somewhere between her strict religious family and her more liberal friends at school.

11 year old Amy, lives in a Muslim family and has no cell phone, or access to social media and therefore she cannot fit in with her middle school peers. Desperate to belong, She steals a cell phone, that her cousin leaves lying out, and we see her upload her first provocative selfie, a pouty "duck face"... Instantly, the "likes" start pouring in. Amy is elated, and slips the phone under her mattress and tries to go to sleep.

She's a hit the next day, at school and eventually wins a place in a dance group that calls themselves "Cuties". The group enters a contest, and guided by what Amy is seeing on Instagram, (influencers are called that for a REASON people!), The group practices become more and more inappropriately seductive. BUT these are little girls! They don't quite know what they are doing is "wrong". They upload the practice videos and are hugely rewarded with "Likes".

And then Amy's cousin sees her with his phone, and he's pissed. "You stole my phone?! She pleads with him to let her keep it, "Please! I need it!" Seeing that she's not going to win this one, she runs to the bathroom, locks the door to take one last "selfie". She wants to make this one count. She snaps a pic of herself naked from the waist down, ( nothing is shown except from the waist up, but we get it.), There is an excruciating two second as she hovers over the "Publish button", squeezes her eyes shut and hits "publish".

She then scrambles over, unlocks the door and tosses the phone out to her cousin, then re-locks the door and sits balled up in a corner, with a look of both excited anticipation and sheer terror, over what she has just done. Without the phone, she has no idea of how that snap is being received, she has high hopes because she has seen so many social media accounts get followers and "likes", for this kind of thing, but is she also terrified because deep down she knows it feels wrong, and could backfire. (And it does. Hugely!).

The three minute dance contest segment people are going all "Karen" over, necessarily shows the shocking result of internet influence on the dance they perform, and when Amy sees the horrified reaction of the audience, she looks down at herself, and her costume, wells up with shame and starts to cry. She runs off stage, and home to her Mother and Grandmother.

I am gobsmacked that people think this is porn. It was a beautiful, truthful depiction of anxieties, missteps and heartaches, girls face as they try to understand who they are, who they want to be and their place in the world. I may even watch it again. My hat is off to the new young writer/director Maïmouna Doucouré, and the lead actress, Fathia Youssouf, is someone to keep your eye on, as she was amazing!

Naked, raw and informative.

Never watched their show, The Bounty Hunter, (I saw some previews and things and decided it wasn't for me). But when I read Beth Chapman had died, and saw the love from her fans, I looked into her illness and found Dog and Beth:The Fight of Their Lives. I was torn about how I felt about this couple, and this documentary, to be honest. They come off as somewhat narcissistic, and their interaction with their children support that. However, their love for one another was moving and genuine.

I was impressed that they chose to show us the stark realities they were dealing with, In their own way, as they grappled with the deadliest predator anyone could ever encounter. Cancer.

That Beth allowed us to take this terrifying, unattractive, vulnerable journey with her, through her diagnosis, treatment decisions ect... and bare it all, from the cat scans, surgery, to the scars, the fears and the tears... The courage and preparation needed to face the ultimate outlaw...was impressive.

I am sorry she ultimately lost her battle with cancer. I can only imagine how her husband, Dog, The Bounty Hunter, feels knowing that his greatest hunt, the hunt for the cure, was beyond his capabilities. RIP Beth Chapman.

Left a lot to be desired

I question the motives of the writer/producer.

The movie seemed designed to cast doubt on Michelle carters conviction for manslaughter. For those of us who read the actual progression, through trial transcripts and the mind-boggling amount of texts aggressively shooting down Conrad's every small attempt to change his mind and live. There is no doubt.

She knew where the victim was when other people, including authorities, were looking for him and lied to people that asked her about his whereabouts. If this was a criminal case and the victim was a criminal being charged for a crime, she'd be held liable for obstruction and potentially interference.

The victim could have gotten help from someone else if she hadn't lied to others but, instead, she knowingly lied with the express intent to make sure that he didn't get help so that she could continue to convince him to kill himself.

That makes it pre-meditated which is what makes it fulfills the condition of criminally negligent manslaughter.

This movie seemed designed to show Conrad Roy in a negative light and downplay Michelle Carters role in his death.

For example, in almost every scene, that's not right inside his home/school we see Conrad smoking a joint and stupid high. (Where did that information come from?). His accomplishments, such as getting his Captains licence seem glossed over ( quickly), and the focus is put on how he is a mentally ill stoner who wants to die.

Michelle get the reverse treatment. Although they do show her as a young women gripped by anorexia, losing friends over her neurotic need to elicit constant attention for from them, they also leave a whole lot out regarding how psychopathic she really was.

For instance, they totally skip the fact that she was trying to be the grieving girlfriend to emulate the lead role in her favorite show "Glee". Conrad died on the exact same date as the character's boyfriend (which explains her urgency that particular day), and Michelle actually quotes that actress, word for word, when faking her grief to friends.

This movie seems to have relied heavily from the point of view of the wack job "Dr" testifying for the defense, who was the laughing stock of the trial.

At least she did go to jail,( finally FIVE years later!), and is currently serving her piddling 15 months.

Wow. Where do I start?
19 February 2019
A wealthy narcissist bilks other wealthy narcissists out of wads of cash by selling tickets to a music event that was nothing but a fantasy in his own mind.

Picture perfect example of the blatant narcissism so prevalent in social media, and the gullible "Followers".

(Dig into the lives of young children, living in homeless shelters for a real picture of money problems and corruption).

This film may accurately portray insipidness to the highest degree, but no one involved is a victim of anyone but themselves and the shallow society they worship.

Treat yourself to this spooky little movie!
3 July 2018
I really enjoyed this movie for exactly what it was, a creepy little tale that you might tell sitting around a campfire deep in the woods...

It was not an intellectually complex movie or one that would leave you going "wow I never saw that coming". It's definitely not going to go down as one of the greatest horror movies of all time.

I liked that the film was unpretentious. It never sought to make you think it was anything but what it was, a spooky little flick. It didn't spend a lot of time on character development initially, but somehow there was just enough to keep you interested.

It moves at a good pace, every time you're just about to think "get on with it", they do.

It was creepy, spooky, and downright scary at times. They artfully employed just enough gore, jump-scares and (just a smidge) of CGI, with a very minimalist hand, that actually added to the film instead of detracting from it the way they so often do these days.

Even those scenes where you have to force yourself to suspend disbelief something interesting pops up so quickly, that somehow you stay engaged and it moves right along.

In addition they added some interesting if sometimes subtle, existential questions, that might have you giving some thought to your own strength of character.

With it's elements of the supernatural, survivalist, and monster movie, I was more than satisfied watching it... by myself late at night!

Perfectly casted, and wonderful preformences by all.

Unbelievably Bad.
24 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
If you like watching people grieve, you might enjoy the first half of this sick excuse for a "Horror" movie because its like Bereavement Porn, Truly depressing as it gets. The circumstances surrounding Charlies beheading are completely unrealistic.

First of all, no parent would insist an older teen take his young sister to a party, then once there, he, (knowing she has a peanut allergy, and no Epi-pen sends her into a kitchen full of drunk/high teens to eat, while he goes into another room to smoke weed. Uhhuh...

As she goes into shock he doesn't call 911, but instead throws her into his car and races off, Hmmmm...

Just as she hangs out the window, an animal appears and he has to swerve. Nice timing animal! None of this is even remotely plausible and it gets worse from there. Much, much worse.

Killing off the only interesting character early on, was bad enough, the prolonged shock/grief that follows is hugely depressing, and then there is nothing to redeem having been forced to feel that bad, because there is no Horror Story in the end, just a jumble of gory imagery and a weak attempt to tie it together with a supernatural slant.

It just doesn't work.

IT evokes a boring theme park ride. Nor scary, not funny over hyped and crummy!
11 March 2018
Very disappointing! I feel they completely destroyed the tension going the kids only route.

I was hoping for the same chemistry between the kids in the Losers Club, that the miniseries had and maybe some interesting new twists in the adult parts...

Instead we get a bunch of dick/yo mama "humor", a decidedly UNscary clown, "Said No One Ever" dialog and generic main characters we don't know enough about to care, that get methodically "frightened" one after another until you just want to scream, " Enough already! We get it, scary, scary CLOWN!"

It was like the Goonies with a dash of E.T. and every movie cliche there is.

What they did with the character of Mike was terrible. And I hear they plan on making him a drug addict in part two. Uhhggg.

I had to rewatch the original mini series twice, just to cleanse my palate!

It Sucked. *May contain spoilers*
17 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This has got to be the most over-hyped movie ever made. I can't believe the (supposedly professional) reviews elsewhere online calling this move a smash success. They must be inflating the ratings, and suppressing bad press for this costly disaster.

There was no chemistry between the kids... At. All. Beverly looked like Little Orphan Annie... She was not very good at faking a nervous smoking habit, which they tried to imply she had, and just about everything those kids did/said, was incredibly stupid. The whole thing was like a bad joke. The dialog is just insulting, and the "scary" parts were just gore or jump scares. I was never less emotionally invested in a set of characters. I found myself wishing Pennywise would just gobble them all up and be done with it.

It absolutely dragged too. About the only thing they "improved" was the role of Henry as the murderous bully. He was truly horrific.

Everything that made the original so good was missing with nothing of value added.

If you've always wanted a version of IT, without any heart, humor, subtly, intrigue or fear...This your movie!

Fake looking CGI's galore, plenty of predictability, as well as "Said No One Ever" dialog, and "I could care less about these kids" character development. Throw in ridiculousness, and throw out any hope of not being bored to death long before IT's over...And there you have it! A marvelous film for the intellectually challenged with nothing better to do.

The Eye Of The Beholder...
25 June 2016
I have watched the original 1960's version of this film many times. I will watch it many more times, no doubt. It's a personal favorite.

I doubt very much, that I will ever watch the 1995 remake again.

The dialog, acting, sense of time and place...All impeccable in the original, seemed lacking in the remake. (The dialog in particular, was dreadful!) The character development was terrible imo. Without the warmth, humor, chemistry and intelligence of the original. I had no compunction to care what happened to any of the characters. I felt the movie dragged and was relieved when it finally ended.

That said, if your not a fan of subtle complexities and prefer more, in-your-face gore, then this might be worth a watch.
