Butter (I) (2011)
10/10
I Watch This Movie Every Year!
7 July 2023
Yeah, so I understand that people who hate this movie are expecting a 'family' film and not this actual movie. This movie has weird scenes of a sexual nature. Olivia Wilde is about as funny as you can get for those scenes, BTW. Do NOT miss her performance.

There are two families in this film. One is Ty Burrell and Jennifer Garner and her step-daughter. The other is Silverstone and Corrdry who have recently adopted a young girl. These two families come together for the butter carving contest that is happening in their Idaho town and will be happening at the state fair, as well.

The wackiness of Garner and Burrell's family is what really makes this movie SING. So, if you don't mind R-rated sexual situations, please see this film. It's funny as it can be.

The Good is the Visuals; the Bad is the Script
17 June 2023
What the heck was ANYONE thinking? This script is a mish-mash of every sentimental, cliched movie ever made. Seeing the "humans" be a$$hats and kill indiscriminately is not my idea of a fun time. This movie got depressing within five minutes and just continued to disappoint as time went on. Geez, it was so sad in places.

Also, they stole a plotline from Jupiter Ascending - now that was a great movie - and made it even worse.

I'm not sure why Cameron made this... oh, wait... BIG BUCKS.

So, this was the third disappointing movie we saw from the Oscar season - Everything, Everywhere was too bizarre to finish watching - yes, it was boring, too.

Then we watched that Banshees of Inersherin movie. What a sad, sorry excuse for a film that was. Geez.

No one even mentioned the fabulous 5000 Years of Longing movie. Now, that was an awesome film!

So, I've listed four films in this, simply to explain what's crap and what's not.

What in the heck was somebody thinking?
6 April 2023
This is the second movie from this year's Oscars that I have seen and thought was STUPID!

I admit, I'm not a fan of multi-verse plotlines. But, you know, a similar plotline was in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. And that story was great! So, I know that odd plotlines can be great.

But this plotline seemed like it was written by two high-schoolers who made up weird stuff for the characters to experience. I tried watching the movie three times, moving forward from where I had quit. And still, I just didn't care.

So, no spoilers in this review. If you like movies that are intelligent, with great dialogue and super acting - THIS IS NOT IT!

Started Slow, Attempted to Pick Things Up, then MEH.
25 December 2022
I really enjoyed the first Knives Out Mystery. But this one? Not so much.

Watching this is time I will never get back. And why is it that when British actors make films in the US, they all use the lamest Southern accent possible. I mean, 007 sounded like Foghorn Leghorn. What is that about?

An odd, convoluted plot line. Dull characters. Weird editing. I mean, think about it. Kathryn Hahn is never dull. But the writing in this made her boring.

Edward Norton is always good. Except in this. Ethan Hawke had ONE LINE. And Kate Hudson was just as dull.

So, find a better movie to enjoy and don't waste your time with this one.

SO DARNED ODD!
19 December 2022
You might recall Brittany Snow from the Pitch Perfect movies. This movie had that same odd dialogue where characters say really odd, inappropriate or absolutely crazy things.

I am a HUGE Justin Long fan and I was really looking forward to this little Christmas truffle. But his character is really strange, like he grew up with the Amish.

Again - odd dialogue.

I ended up watching it all, attempting to jive with the vibe, but it's really not all that good.

That being said, it COULD have been good, perhaps with some tweaks in various areas. And, I did enjoy Brittany and Justin, even with his odd character.

Apparently this was filmed where it was really cold and there was a lot of snow which they used to great affect.

Also, it was great seeing Norm after all these years. NORM!

Morbius (2022)

If you liked The Batman (2022) you won't like this.
18 September 2022
Thought it was so odd that this movie, which is pretty darned good, got such bad reviews while The Batman, which was boring af, was adored by reviewers. Just goes to show you that you have to check things out for yourselves. Apparently, I have a different requirement for what makes a movie "good."

You know the plot - ill doctor wants to find a cure for his own illness and becomes bat-like.

I really liked the looks of Morbius as he changed from "normal" to the bat-creature.

The special effects were exceptional. The dialogue was great and the acting was super. It was well-edited, clearly plotted, beautifully filmed and easy to follow. Enjoy!

Austen with a Modern Take and HUMOR!
29 July 2022
I'm going to review both the 2022 version of Persuasion against the 2007 version starring Sally Hawkins.

In a way, the 2022 version is a remake of the 2007 version where Hawkins gazes at the camera, allowing her expressive face (as seen during her performance in "that fish movie") to provide the secrets of her thoughts. She reads "aloud" from her diary, but does not speak to the camera, like Dakota Johnson does.

I liked the 2007 version's cast a bit better, though Mary Elliott in the 2022 version is a treasure! I loved the humor in the 2022 version, preferring Mary's character to the annoying Mary in the 2007 version, though Austen wrote her as annoying.

In the 2022 version, I liked the humor, I liked the modern terms, like "play list" and the comments added to combat men's ideas about women. I loved those!

Sally Hawkins from the 2007 version embodies Austen's character more authentically. And I preferred Rupert Penry-Jones as the 2007 Captain Wentworth to the 2022. Ignoring the lengthy track-and-field race at the end of the 2007 version, I think it's my favorite. It took a long time to replace the 1995 version, which is also excellent!

So, enjoy what you get with either version. They're too much fun not to!

Only Slightly Better than the Eternals
25 June 2022
I haven't turned it off in disgust yet, but I'm bored as heck.

The movie makers spent a fortune on CGI and figured, I guess, that that would be enough for Dr. Strange fans. But it's not. It's like a bad nightmare - no pun intended. I had high hopes for this movie, but they were dashed in the first twenty minutes.

If it helps, I hated Wanda Vision, so a continuation of Wanda's storyline is not interesting to me, either.

Called Rebellion in the US - NOT Revolt So Good.
7 May 2022
If you're a fan of Lee Pace, as I am, you will love this film. Alien invasion + US military leader + tricky plot lines = heaven.

It reminds me of Edge of Tomorrow.

Pace is Bo. A French military medical doctor is played by Berenice Marlohe. And Jason Flemyng as a photographer.

Enjoy!

Sally Hawkins is my favorite Anne.
27 March 2022
Although I find this version a bit more abbreviated than the prior version - 1995 version, I did enjoy both stars as Anne Elliot and Wentworth. I thought they brought more to the roles than the prior version; however, I thought the direction and editing of the last ten minutes was really odd and not as appropriate to the story as I would have liked.

---Addition....

What the Heck was this SUPPOSED to be?
27 February 2022
I watch a lot of films. I have even watched Wes Anderson films. But this one is a waste of film, writing, lighting, acting and pretty much anything having to do with movie making.

I really, really wanted to like it. I did not.

Beautifully Filmed Dreariness
6 February 2022
I had not seen the1947 version of this and am glad that I didn't because it would have been as miserable yet probably not as beautifully filmed.

Sets, costumes, production design - all great. But gee whiz, can we have something more than "mildly interesting" happen in a scene?

Oh well. I will never get back that time, but can now warn you all to find better fare to enjoy.

Wow! A Stellar Performance by Aniston!
4 January 2022
I finally saw this movie. What a great one. Aniston is an accident survivor with pins in her legs, living in pain. Coping is hard and so is everything that follows.

I don't want to give away any spoilers, but I found that living through the difficult "today" made the ending so much more satisfy.

A really wonderful performance by the entire cast, but especially Jennifer Aniston!

Leslie Mann is a Comedy GENIUS!
1 January 2022
This is such a fun movie! When a woman finds out her lover has a wife, the wife tracks her down.

Thus begins The Other Woman starring Leslie Mann as the wife and Cameron Diaz as the other woman. These two together, with Diaz playing it straight against Mann's nuttiness, are as funny as you get!

The plot thickens with additional other women and the women decide to get their revenge.

OMG, I LOVE this movie!

If This was Gonna Happen, This is How it Would Happen
28 December 2021
Great performances by everyone in this film. When a comet is discovered to be hurtling toward earth, the two scientists involved are understandably concerned.

What follows is a realistic critique of our media, our government and ourselves and how we fail each other.

Ignore the bad reviews and watch and learn.

It's Tough Being the Smartest Person in the Room
19 December 2021
Cumberbatch - who I LOVE - plays yet another insufferable know it all in this movie placed in Montana in 1925. In this, Phil's intelligence is hidden behind his cowboy demeanor. As smart as he is, he cannot hide his disgust for anyone else, or any social niceties.

This movie is a character study that centers on Phil and his brother, played by Jesse Plemons. His brother decides to marry a "suicide widow" without discussing it with Phil.

Some smart people love to lord it over others and make them feel the depth of their inferiority. In this movie, Phil lords it over everyone, which crushes his brother's new wife. Her son, however, is NOT crushed and his inner strength calls to something in Phil, who tries to "help" the young man while he is home on a break from medical school.

There is a lot of tension in the film and the film does not reveal its secrets easily - you must pay attention.

I found the ending a bit too short, too blunt and a bit obscured. I wanted more of everything the ending gave us. Just a little more would have satisfied me.

I recently saw an early performance by the marvelous Mr. Cumberbatch in the TV show MI5 ("Spooks" in the UK). He was on the screen for an unforgettable 45 seconds and was, as always, awesome!

Better Than MOST "Action" Films
22 May 2021
Wow! This movie keeps moving from one exciting scene to the next.

My husband wondered why movies like "Godzilla versus Kong" weren't as exciting as this film.

Jolie, as crazy-beautiful as she always has been, is using all her strengths in this one. The entire cast is wonderful. And the FIRE! The fire is freaking awesome and scary!

LIVE ACTION IS NOT ALWAYS BETTER
4 September 2020
After recently completing the three-season animated series, I was missing the show. So I watched this movie... It helped. The movie unable to provide the details and background that the three-season series does and it's missing two things: 1) the humorous dialogue - I really missed that! - and 2) the Scooby / Buffy vibe of the group. I've convinced my husband to watch the series with me, so this movie did provide background. The kids are amazingly similar to the animated characters, the message is the same, but it was just an intro to the show. Enjoy it for what it is! Then watch the animated series. It's amazing!

I thought I'd seen ALL of William Powell's movies
19 April 2020
As a huge fan of Powell, I thought I'd seen all his films. But I was surprised to discover this gem. The star here is really Ann Harding, but Powell shines as the object of her affection. The plot is simple, but the script is amazing and Harding's character is perfect - quiet, smart, and subdued. She manages to manipulate her life, and Powell's, until things get out of control. Then, her honesty and frankness save her. I LOVED IT!

Tom Cruise is having a very weird day
1 December 2019
Tom Cruise is having a very bad day in this movie mashup of Alien and Groundhog Day. Wearing a very fancy suit, Cruise's character takes Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, survives his first battle and meets the girl in the first ten minutes. Now he just needs to save the planet.

I love this film. It's crazy and wacky and I honestly do not know how they do it, but it gets done.

I love that nothing is repeated like you'd expect and nothing happens like you think it will. Enjoy!

This movie was a historical view of women's rights before changes in legislation
3 July 2019
When a woman shows up at the police station and tells them that her husband is planning to kill her and there's nothing they can do... That was the state of things when Julie discovered that her current husband killed her first husband.

The cops even listed the names of women who'd been murdered by their husbands in the past few months! THAT was terrifying!

Thankfully, women now have some methods for intervention in dangerous cases like this, though it's not perfect even now.

The airline did not have any procedures in place for emergencies, either. Boy, have we come a long way!

I'm a huge Doris Day fan, but didn't feel this one was as good as many others she's done. However, I hope people saw it and worked to change legislation.

15 January 2019
I watched Molly's Game and found it amazing, fascinating, moving and terrifying. The screenplay and direction by Sorkin and Ms. Chastain's brilliant performance make this a smart, heartfelt movie.

I am certain that the original Ms. Bloom is also brilliant. See this film!

The Finest Actors at the Height of Their Skills
25 December 2018
Please see this movie! The story of Madame George Sand, the writer, and her meeting of the music instructor and composer Chopin.

With a supporting cast that is as amazing as can be imagined, this story explains the life and times of the various artists and musicians of the day. You will learn what life was like for them and the women and men who loved them, and the nobles who supported them.

It is also one of the funniest movies you'll ever see!

I saw this in the theater before I knew who Hugh Grant was. I already loved the wonderful Judy Davis and the handsome Julian Sands. This movie allowed me to discover Emma Thompson in an early movie role. She's also funny as hell.

"Better to feel something than nothing." "Even if it's teeth!"

I Do Not Understand the Point of This Show
8 October 2018
Before this show started, I heard so much yammering about the main character being a woman and wasn't it nice that this show had a woman protagonist and women finally had their time in animation comedy and blah, blah, blah, yada, yada, yada.

So what do we get for this "finally" woman protagonist? She's a drunken tart with low self-esteem and daddy issues.

How is this "new"? There are no satiric points to be made or humor to be enjoyed.

The show is weird. I've laughed at TWO things in all of the six episodes I've watched: a racist deer and lamprey eel food. That was it. Everything else seems sad and not funny.

I'm also feeling excessively bitter that Groening wasted all of our time with this. I've always been a fan. Leila was a much better female protagonist on a far superior show. Lisa Simpson was a person to be respected and who became president after Trump! (Hahahahahahaha!) What happened with Bean?

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Costume Dramas and this one is GREAT!
17 August 2018
Sweet film about a writer, a story and a WWII story about the island of Guernsey.

Well cast, well paced and beautifully written. I hope you'll check this out and enjoy the love that magically occurs when you're in the right place at the right time.

Lily James is always a delight (loved her in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) and the rest of the cast were equally wonderful. I love when the costumes and production values are as high as they were for this movie.

Enjoy!
