Good Premise, Great Actors Squandered (WARNING: Spoiler in second paragraph)
31 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Whoever directed this has obviously never lived or worked in a colder climate for any length of time. I have. The beginning of the end of this one for me was seeing the actors behave as if they were walking around in 20-degree weather when it was supposed to be -10 in a blizzard with a stiff wind...with nothing on their faces. That, and the overdone interjection of surreal scenes to hammer in the message of the the film did it in.

Now for the spoiler. ALERT ALERT

Was I the only one who was dismayed that the wolves magically appeared on the other side of the gorge? Forget about jumping the shark, the movie jumped the gorge at that point.

You must see this!

Incredible film. They could not make this in Hollywood. Begin with the most realistic film from the Middle Ages - ever. The story is that they shot two films from a group of actors who lived in medieval conditions for this and The Valley of the Bees. Add in incredible acting from the likes of Menshik and Vasryova. Josef Kemr -who I had only seen do comic roles - as Kozlik - incredible. The battles are very realistic - no phony CGI, no special effects that leave you wondering where the humans are... If you like Andrei Rublev, Virgin Spring, Seventh Seal, etc., YOU MUST SEE THIS (and I rarely use all caps). If you are a fan of Menshik (Lemonade Joe, Who wants to kill Jessie) or Vasaryova (Off on the Comet, etc.) YOU MUST SEE THIS.

Lightweight but fun!

This one takes you all over the other side of Egypt...and along the way you get to see a warped wedding, a whacked-out belly dance routine, and a shaabi wedding. Lots of fun...definitely not the Yacoubian Building, but it ain't supposed to be... Hanaidi is good in his role as the soldier. The actor who played Hassan the Perfumer was my favorite, right up there with Rodney Dangerfield at his most whacked out. The other straight men performed admirably - particularly the father. Watch out for the cab-driver - if you've ever taken a black-and-white in Cairo this character may seem eerily familiar.

Highly recommended, particularly for non-Egyptian tourists.

Very good - not Carpenter, but very good!

Rob Zombie continues to impress me with his more recent movies. I dreaded what could have been a more surgical or in-your-face approach to the juggernaut-style horror tale...and was truly pleased with the result. Is it all logical? Fairy tales aren't, and this version is straight out of the Brothers Grimm grimmer stories. I'll add that the picture/action compositions with the subtle use of focus, framing, color were top shelf. As usual, Zombie has some twisted jokes in there - but many are subtle interactions of soundtrack/action, etc. If you want to see something more than an endless chase, like the interplay of psychological and physical horror, watch this.

Excellent comedy

This is a real rarity - a film that totally skewers the centrally-controlled system. The basic premise - to me - is how does a system that wants to control everyone and everything from gardens to belief in God deal with a phenomenon that contradicts their view of reality. Based on a real Czech folk legend (the White Lady being Perchta of Rozemberk) the film quickly takes off in some great directions. Hrusinsky, Bohdalova, Kopecsky and Brodsky are excellent, as is the rest of the cast. It took a while for me to get a hold of this one on DVD but it was well worth the wait. I rank this with other mid-60's Czech subversive films like Firemen's Ball and Who Wants to Kill Jessie?.

If you liked From Dusk Til Dawn,,, (quasi-spoiler)

Warning: Spoilers
You HAVE to see this - and then ask yourself how original one of the central parts of that film is. Some parts seem - to me - to be direct "borrowings". I actually like Filipino horror films - they tend to be fantastic, have pretty good production values (other than the monster costumes and mad-scientist sets), and have some fine actors in them. This one has good camera-work, good lighting, the soundtrack works. Filipino horror films, like Mexican ones, also have different religious undertones that add something to them.

The acting is usually solid, although the dialogue probably would flow better if the Filipinos spoke Spanish. Vic Diaz, who is in this one, is great. If you like him, check out his flatulent vampire in Vampire Hookers.

Give it a try - the first time I saw it I thought it was just cheesy, but had to see it a second and third time. I'll bet you Tarantino did.
