Coat (2023)

A worth-watching feel-good show that could've been better?
8 March 2023
I loved it. The show itself isn't the most realistic, intellectual nor well-written show, I must admit, I expected better comedy writing from Ahmed Atef since his posts are often hilarious, so I felt like he was playing it safe with this one? I only laughed out loud maybe once or twice but it still does what it aims to do and it's a light fun show with the right amount of interesting drama events to carry it so I throughly enjoyed it and it's totally worth watching.

First time watching Essam Omar as a leading actor and he's really talented. He seems like a young "Ahmed Helmy" in the making. Can't wait to see what he does next. The supporting characters were also very well-casted. I like the fact that they didn't cast big names and the show still made it on its own because all cast are brilliant and played their characters really well. The styling and makeup team also did a great job and all characters looked pretty relatable which is somewhat rare to see in Egyptian shows nowadays.

Finding Ola (2022– )
6/10
Sorta disappointed.
22 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I mean, imagine taking the characters of one of the funniest and most relatable Egyptian sitcoms and then ruining them. The writing felt forced into representing a society that isn't really Ola's. And isn't necessarily Egypt. The Ola that represented the middle class habits, work ethics, goals, struggles, interactions and clothes. I get that she may have evolved and all but some things never change and this Ola felt nothing like the original character imo. The series is enjoyable on its own but to me, it just lost what made "ayza atgawez" special in the first place, relatability. And I also didn't like the fact that they portrayed Ola using a photo of her mom without hijab as such a noble and liberating act, it felt disrespectful to me, a young adult, and I'd imagine most Egyptian moms would feel the same way had they been in that same situation. Sawsan badr looks beautiful with and without hijab and they just shouldn't have suggested that using a photo without her hijab is because she's celebrating her beauty and is still young etc. It's just offensive to suggest that it's only for old people. It also felt out of character for her mom to accept such an act so easily. And then her husband's character just doesn't add up, so many contradictions tbh. Like the same husband who's so respectful and understanding after divorce who easily gave her all her rights and was so civil is the same one who made her quit her job and lose her friend! Just doesn't add up to me. And her struggle is just unrealistic, I mean, I get it's a comedy after all, but still, I kept hoping to find the Ola, that once perfectly portrayed the struggles of the young Egyptian girl trying to find a husband in a funnier and more relatable show, throughout the series and it just didn't happen. The struggles of a real mom aren't there. The struggles of a real daughter aren't there. The struggles of a real wife or divorcée are far from being there. It's enjoyable and worth watching but just lower your expectations.

My Bride (2021)
2/10
Cringe.
22 February 2022
I had really really low expectations and was still disappointed. The acting is horrible. The casting itself is horrible and the plot is pretty much non-existent. I'm amazed that such movies get funded in the first place. Honestly felt like they struggled to put each and every cliche the writer has ever seen in any rom com in one movie with absolutely no story written. And jamila Awad is still far from being the lead actress in any movie imo especially when the lead is a supposedly fun and quirky person and watching her struggle to act like one is just about the worst part besides her female friend character. The jokes honestly feel like they're copied from a 2010 Facebook page run by a teenager at best. The soundtrack is good though. Overall, an absolute waste of time.

Why not? (2020– )

Second season is a masterpiece.

I haven't watched the first season but the second one is an absolute masterpiece. Very emotional and made me laugh and tear up and feel for every character even the children, brilliant choice of cast along with the excellent soundtrack and the original storyline (especially for egyptian dramas) makes it easily one of my faves, a breath of fresh air.
