Line of Duty: The Betrayal (2019)
Season 5, Episode 4
7/10
(LoD) Not the Greatest but is the most Thrilling! S5/EP4
22 April 2019
Line of Duty has always managed to build stories that twist and turn whenever you look away. Sometimes you might miss a key moment due to not paying attention within each scene. However, this episode doesn't do that much in terms of "Greatness" - there are some twists, very few. But the real shocker was the scenes near the end of this episode. (I won't spoil it for anyone but I'd be lying if I didn't say that this twist was unexpected) Not so much the end result but the way it was executed.

This episode fails to engage me into the world of Line of Duty, and I'm starting to dislike the story elements that were never important in previous episodes from the other series (1-4) If you can get over the scenes that are unrealistic and really make you go: "AS IF THAT WOULD HAPPEN" and "AS IF NOBODY WOULD NOTICE THESE COPS / PEOPLE SUPPOSEDLY SPYING OUT OF SIGHT" - Don't make me laugh. But if we can ignore all that, I think it's fair to say that this episode was a real thrill ride. It didn't take too long to get interesting and was trying to connect side-stories and previous storylines and make it all connect somehow. Again, this episode made me angry and I don't mean the writing made me angry. No, it was the way it ended. The way they wanted to take these characters, and how one character had a complete character replacement. Just forget what you knew about (this character) because they are no longer going to act in the way they would in previous episodes. Nope, they are going to be more stupid and make mistakes.

My other problem with this episode is that Jed felt the need to bring back something from Series 1 that seeing it now is unbelievable and immersion breaking. Get real, and I'm not the only one who was annoyed with this episode's decisions. Many fans have already written their opinions and most of them are saying how it was "JUMPING THE SHARK" - ect.

Finally, I think it's best to just wrap up this review with some truths: (1) The episode pacing is no longer consistent and is slowing down and then speeding up again, only to fall flat. (2) The impact of the twist was strong and was impressive. It also made for a thrilling episode but it wasn't "EPIC" - it was just unexpected (the way it was executed) - (3) The decision of having a character removed from the show was a mistake. It didn't add anything except shock value and "upsetting scenes" - But it was obvious it was going to happen, just not sure how it was going to happen to them. The mistake was having this character removed from the show rather than another character that has outstayed their welcome from Series 1 (Ryan) - No need for him to exist in this series whatsoever.

Overall, a great episode that is worthy of 7.5 Stars! Anything above that is just overhyping it and seeing it as the best episode yet. I'll agree that it was a great episode but the next episodes may be even better. This one was not SHOCKING for the right reasons. It was SHOCKING because it had to be. Jed knows how to entice an audience and shock them (even if looking back on it may make that decision look stupid in context or maybe others may think it was ridiculous) One thing is for certain... This series is currently in knots and doesn't really know where it is going. Jed even mentioned that he would make changes if he thinks of something better. Enjoy this episode guys but honestly, it's not the best and I want to believe that once the hype dies down, people will start to come to terms that this episode was slow and tedious. It didn't seem in character and ruined a character that had so much potential to be a great character to the very end ! -_-

FINAL RATING: 7.5/10 (We are all entitled to our opinions, I hope you can agree with this to an extent. You may not agree 100% but maybe some of this review shares itself with your reviews / opinions on this episode)

RATING FOR SERIES SO FAR: 8/10 (It's been great so far, and that's not because of this episode. That's because of the previous episodes that created some great characters and built existing characters with more LORE)

YOU - Episode 5

Warning: Spoilers
It's always disappointing to watch a previous episode and then see the pattern of mistakes. This episode tries way too hard to come across as thrilling or exciting. The obvious twist that can be seen by anyone who's watched shows like this before. Or, you might just see the twist coming due to knowing who the actress is.

It was clear from the very start of introducing Peach; she is annoying, cliched, unrealistic to a certain extent. Once again, like Captain- It's trying too hard to come across as edgy, and not even the better production can save this. Once again, the acting is amazing when it comes to the better moments. But the acting can drop in quality and this shows when the writing becomes less impressive.

Overall, I'd say this episode borrows from Captain. But also tries to be something different without much success.

Final Verdict: 5/10 Stars "It's edgy enough to be liked?"

Half-Joe, Half-Bad, Half-Beck - Episode 10
17 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Starting with the main problem that I think is impossible to ignore; Joe's relationship with Beck starts to show more clearly... but the real problem is how over the top his obsession is. Kudos to the Writer who was willing to take risks into working with insanity, but this is starting to fall into fan-fiction writing.

Before this episode, I was slightly worried the writer was going to get too wrapped up in their own writing and ego. This episode is also filled with side stories that have no real reason to exist. The main focus is Joe and Beck, but it's clear to me that the writing is starting to fall into fan-fiction territory.

The music is used to bring across emotions but when you hear a joke that is so forced, it ruins the immersion? Well, that's where the show falls flat. It tries so hard to be this "realistic" show that portrays a person who is obsessed with a woman but also has evil tendencies.

Interestingly enough, the reason why so many people wanted to watch this series is due to (1) It promised to be about a writer, but it's bad. Why? It doesn't ever focus on the writer aspect. One episode throughout the entire series with Beck talking in her mind (which was the worst move they made) It doesn't pay off in this final episode. It just stretches disbelief and my god, I cringed at the writing towards the end.

Beck talking like she knows everything is what really takes the character transplant act. Blue Beard made me laugh, it was a bad move. And the forced acting from Beck reading her script. Jesus, it's hard to watch. Overall, I was disappointed with plot holes, cliches, the glaring problems with the scripts.

Characters changing personality completely. Claudia didn't add anything to this series. It's great to see Joe being a concerned neighbor but it doesn't add anything to the story. More filler! And why does the writer act like nobody would ask where Benji is?! It's pathetic and just kills everything where the "realism" apparently exists.

Oh well, I don't recommend watching Series 2 as it's now starting to shape into a story full of errors and occasional bad acting. The real funny thing is how this really tries to be similar to Mr. Robot. The narration and characters.

Final Verdict: 5/10 Stars "It's a thrilling ride that ends in disbelief"

YOU - Episode 4

Unbelievably full of filler... The story between Joe and Beck is starting to dwell on boring. The first thing you will notice right away is the change of tone and pacing. Allowing us to see Beck's thoughts was a huge mistake in the making of this series.

It's a real set back as I feel it would be far more effective to not know what's going on in her head. Not only is it boring to listen to her drone on about how she feels and what she thinks of the same situation repeated from her perspective instead of Joes.

But it really drags the episode down with a twist that was hardly a twist to begin with. The style throughout this episode feels like filler. The episode tries to make you feel for these characters but the acting and writing is not on par with the Pilot episode. It's startimg to decrease dramatically in quality...

Overall, it gets six stars from me. If you don't enjoy this episode, I recommend skipping it.

You: Maybe (2018)

YOU - Episode 3
13 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Episode 3 continues to dwell on the "Maybe" but Joe wants better than just Maybe. Once again, Joe is the more interesting character. Beck continues to be a great character while the episode explores a Race against time with Joe having to dispose the body of Benji.

The real problem starts to show with this episode and the previous one; Why has nobody asked about Benji and nobody questions why he has not replied to phone calls or texts?

Overall, without spoiling much more of the episode: It's another interesting episode that's not quite as intense as others have you believe on here or on Rotten Tomattoes. Again, the problem is Peach and Becks friends. They are a waste of screen time and with them removed, nothing would be missing. So, we have to put up with immature friends who are boring to watch.

You: The Last Nice Guy in New York (2018)
Season 1, Episode 2

YOU - Episode 2
13 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
It's starting to get interesting as we start to see that Beck is not as innocent as she seems. This soon changes and things start to become more clear between the characters.

Joe's relationship with Paco is always great to see. The start with the Frankenstein book was a nice touch. Beck is starting to become more interesting but Peach is boring me to tears. Some of the dialogue from the female cast just sounds cliche and it's starting to become too repetitive.

However, I can't say the episode is bad. It's an episode that really starts to develop on the characters and relationships. The friends of Becks are annoying but that is the way it is supposed to be. Doesn't change the fact that the writing and dialogue for them is obnoxious and so fake.

The exploration of Benj and Joe's feud is starting to develop with more interesting interactions. But the main problem are the now present plot holes. Example: Somehow Becks calls Joe on his phone even though they never exchanged numbers. Doesn't make sense and ruins the immersion.

Overall, I liked the episode but it could've been so much better. The sooner we stop seeing the friends of Becks, the better!
