Dallas Buyers Club (2013)
Powerful and Gritty. A Must See
Dallas Buyers Club: Wow... when I first watched it, I didn't understand it's brilliance. I believed the film was a good story nonetheless, but I never truly understood the heart and power behind the beautiful story telling.
Having since re-watched it now I can honestly say that this film is truly moving. I was nearly brought to tears just from the subtlety of storytelling and the performances: the motivations of both the main and background characters just to LIVE... is heartbreaking- and you can see the raw emotions and dedication from these characters.
Of course not to mention the two deserving-oscar-winning male performances.
Deepened by the knowledge that this is a true story, (and although there might have been some creative licensing taken) it is heartbreaking to assume that some people would have lived with this sense of urgency and despair. I found the film excelled in those little moments and expressions of the characters. The grit and uncensored look this film takes in displaying and discussing the AIDS situation of the 90's is also paramount to it's excellence. It truly is a powerful look into such an issue. This and Demme's 'Philadelphia' will move you to your core.
MUST WATCH at least once.
Busanhaeng (2016)
Must watch!
Just finished watching this (and whilst a few years later to the party) I can honestly say that Train to Busan was perfect. 10/10 easy. Amazing. Intense. Realistic but also controls a very confronting zombie-esc story line. Action packed from 10 mins in and never lets go. Heart rate went through the roof and in a good way. Powerful storytelling and for a South Korean film, amazing. I would 10000% recommend to anyone that likes thrilling and gripping films, survival stories, heartfelt daughter-father stories and a must watch for fans of the zombie genre.
Ted Lasso (2020)
BELIEVE!
Being someone that prefers films over television, I haven't actually given the time or effort to watch an entire tv series since HBO's 'Chernobyl' was released, but wow... Ted Lasso was so worth it!
Quite easily the best tv series I have seen in a long long time. It starts off as a light-hearted comedy that lets you settle into the world it portrays and the quite funny circumstance of its plot. Once you are comfortable, please allow yourself to hear and dig into the deeper meanings. The show is nuanced and tells the story of such a kind-hearted and high-spirited man who only really wants to do good for other and the world - the character of Ted Lasso truly suits Jason Sudeikis' bubbly personality and charisma.
In terms of characters, the arcs are pure, and you honestly find yourself rooting for all the good and shunning all the negative. Ted is a positively spirited man and that energy is so contagious- you find yourself being so engrossed in the world it's created and at time, on the edge of your seat, "believing" in this rather believable world.
On the surface level, it's portrayed as a "comedy" and rightly so, within the moments of heart ache and deeper meanings, it gives u that ease of relief with those comedic remedies that life does truly offer. - But at its core, it's more than just a comedy- it's a beautiful and truly nuanced moving story. One that will have you rooting for the team and also thinking, wow, some people are saints.... and devils.
Probably the golden ticket for this show is it's runtime. Each 30 min episode flies by- backing so much pure energy and story in such a small time without feeling rushed or forced. You could easily binge them all in one sitting with there being only 10, 30 min episodes in the season (now that they are all out)
Ted Lasso is a truly great feel-good-story, a 10/10 and must watch. Can't wait for season 2!
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Chilling, Suspenseful, Freaky
The accomplishment and rare feat that this film achieved winning all five of the major Academy Awards, is remarkable. However, this Chilling, Suspenseful story taunts with the viewer into a uneasy sense, which enlightens you on the horrific nature of human beings, and furthermore the gruesome brutality of serial killers.
