Conversations with Friends: Episode #1.3 (2022)
it's just a little... boring?
I'm trying to like it, but it's just so meh. Visually it's nice, the score is good too, but i'm 1/4 in now and the story has absolutely no grip on me
it was always going to be compared against normal people, and whilst there are areas that are - very - similar, it is just nowhere near as good/interesting/gripping, which is a shame
i hope that it picks up.
Alex Rider (2020)
Loved it, but slightly slow.
I'm not one to write reviews really, I think this is my second ever. I will keep it short.
I grew up reading the Alex Rider novels with my brother, I'm 24 now and often still listen to the Audiobooks. I remember going to watch the 2006 film at the cinema and being so disappointed, it felt like the whole film had got almost everything wrong. In my opinion, this story has always been better suited to a TV adaption, theres so much potential with it.
This season is based on the second book of the series - Point Blank. Its a great story, well modernised and adapted for a 2020 series. The casting is good, acting all decent to say its a fairly young cast, and the cinematography is ace. I love the colour grading and really enjoyed a lot of the visuals. There are areas and aspects that I didn't like, I wish it'd kept true to a few more elements of the book but I don't begrudge it for that. I can honestly say I'm not disappointed in the slightest with this show, and thats high praise from a guy who's childhood was spent reading, listening and acting out these books! My only comment is about the pacing - the first few eps are pretty drawn out and it takes some time to get into the good stuff.
The series ends well, and is nicely set up for a follow up. I hope it happens as I thoroughly enjoyed it, and know there's a lot of great adventures that can follow.
1917 (2019)
Impeccable
More than a film. An immersive experience. Everything that Deakins and co. wanted to convey is done to the finest detail, I couldn't take my eyes off it. Honestly one of the most gripping films I've seen, absolutely loved it.
Cabins in the Wild with Dick Strawbridge (2017)
Celebrating beautiful design
I love George Clarkes Amazing Spaces, and that's what drew me to this program.
There really are some beautiful pieces of design showcased here, and the process and craftsmanship is celebrated too. As a design lover, I really enjoyed this show.
The Circle: Live Final (2018)
Mediocre
A somewhat mediocre end to a brilliant show. Think the live final setup needs a rethink should this show return for future series.
All in all an astounding serious though, easily one of the best reality tv shows i've seen.
