The Covenant (2006)
Worthwhile, but don't look for too much depth...
Having just seen the movie for the first time today, I've got to say that it's definitely an eye-candy flick a la The Matrix at times. If you're looking for a clever plot, you can find that hidden in the background. If you're not quite that cerebral and want to just watch something ever so slightly different than the usual action movie, you can have that as well. The main area where this movie suffers is in character development. Characters remain static in their personality, and the only real advancement to be seen is in "power levels." Some of the characters are almost stock (Caleb as the responsible eldest, Reid as the younger rebel against authority, and Chase as the outsider looking to usurp what he never had). This can lead to some disappointment if you're expecting to see a character come to realize anything profound. It's not going to happen, unfortunately. Thrown in are several amusing lines that leave you chuckling even after the movie's over, but these occur mostly in the first half of the movie. In general the movie is entertaining, but seems not to have taken advantage of the potential of the story. All in all, worth watching but don't stress if you can't catch it in theaters. It'll definitely be eye candy on DVD before too long.
