Lucky Man (2016–2018)
7/10
Not a Marvel Universe story.
6 March 2016
Reading the other reviews, I believe that most people expected to see a spandex-dressed superhero series. Stan Lee's name in the very title of the series would cause that.

This is a police story. Police detectives who have to deal with something seemingly impossible. It is the concept of ordinary people who have to deal with extraordinary situations.

It is closer to "Fringe" than anything else. Not much action, but plenty of mystery. It has an intriguing plot (with a few minor flaws) that keeps interest quite high. Acting is OK, nothing exceptional, but nothing disappointing either.

Overall this is a great story, told in a satisfying way. As I am a fan of the genre, I consider "Lucky Man" to be one of the top 3 series of 2016.

Ninja Greeks, vs Ninja Persians
15 December 2014
Why oh why do Hollywood writers have to so brutally rape history, while history itself is so interesting that it would have made a great movie in the first place?

The 300 were the the Spartan king's guard. They were present at Thermopylaie, but they had nothing to do with the battle of Salamis. So the title is off. Salamis was a naval battle commanded by the Athenians and their general Themistocles. In this movie, Themistocles (and everyone else apparently) has ninja powers. Xerxes, the noble Persian emperor is apparently a freak of nature who carries his freak-show with him and he has a woman to command his fleet...

The dialogs are worse than an 80's Hong-Kong karate b-movie and there is unnecessary nudity all over. The visual style, while something fresh on the original movie, it is not effective now and sometimes it even becomes annoying.

This movie is an insult to everyone because not only of it's content and how much history was twisted, but because it is just a poor movie.

Flawed, but the message is not hidden in the technicalities
15 December 2014
I find it hard to follow a story that has a deep message, when it is surrounded by inaccuracies as great as the ones in this movie.

I was just reading a paragraph in Bill Bryson's "A short history of nearly everything" in which he asks a geologist how much warning would we have in case of an asteroid hitting the earth. The answer was "probably about a second". These things travel many times faster than the speed of sound and they only become visible when they hit the atmosphere - which they cross in about a second before they slam on the surface. From then on, it would take a few minutes before the effect was global. Not days, not hours.

The movie is not about the event itself. It is about redemption, forgiveness, faith, soul searching and more. And it would have been great, if the main event premise wasn't flawed from the start. If you can overlook this (and a few other holes in the plot), this is an OK movie, it might even touch you in some sense and make you wonder what would you if the world would end in hours?

The Equalizer (2014)

Entertaining, but shallow
15 December 2014
This is a vigilante movie. A man with a dark, mysterious past, lives an ordinary life, until something wakes his older self and he starts eliminating bad guys.

The premise is old and overused and there are hardly any innovations in this movie. However, it is very well made. Nicely acted, Denzel is convincing at his role and the supporting cast play their parts very nicely. Nice direction, nice soundtrack and a decent finale. No upsets, twists or surprises - No disappointments, letdowns or frustration whatsoever. It is pretty violent for children and some women were "annoyed" by the brutality of some of the killings, but it won't give you nightmares.

Overall I was entertained by this movie, fans of the genre will be pleased.

Gone Girl (2014)

A bad book, turned int an even worse movie.
14 December 2014
I read the book because there was a huge sticker on it's cover claiming that it was bought by a major Hollywood studio to be made into a Ben Affleck-starring blockbuster. It claimed to be a mystery / thriller, so I gave it a shot.

The first half is brutally boring, there is a major (but not unexpected) twist halfway, and it gets just as boring again, until it ends. I was disappointed by the book, but when I started reading some good reviews about the movie, I thought that the adaptation must have corrected most of its flaws. Alas, it was not to be. The movie is just as uninteresting as the book, making me wonder why on earth did I waste so much time on this ridiculous story.

I never liked Ben Affleck, especially after he murdered "Daredevil", but I liked "Argo" and I thought that he might just be on a roll with this. Unfortunately for him, this movie is bad, and this time it really is not his fault. Don't waste your time (and money) on this.

A true gem
14 December 2014
This is the perfect example of how a good story can make a film great, without special effects, violence, sex, celebrities or a huge budget.

Shot in a beautiful village, with a hand full of actors and the real villagers as themselves, this is a story of hope. A story that simply says you can't give up on dreaming of a better place under the sun, even when you're facing the sunset.

I was especially touched by the scene of the funeral, where Jackie speaks about his friend.

Overall however, the movie is funny, touching and somehow liberating.

Please, do watch this movie.

Don't bother...
12 January 2013
After watching the trailer and reading a two-line synopsis, I thought this could have been quite entertaining. Unfortunately, it proved to be one of the worst movies I have ever watched. Most characters are not only uninteresting, they are actually annoying. The story could have some potential as it involves overprotecting mothers freaking out about their children being kidnapped - plus a couple of subplots that go totally unexploited, but it is so badly written, directed and edited that it ends up being a complete waste of time.

As the movie progressed, I really wished a monster like "Predator" would appear in the woods and kill everyone, just to add something interesting to this movie...

Don't waste your time on this.

An unknown gem!
28 August 2008
In my country, it is impossible to find this movie. Not ever did it play in any theaters, or it was released in Video. I just happened to watch a trailer in ComingSoonTV years ago and I got so interested I searched everywhere - and I ended buying it from the overseas Amazon store.

It is a small wonder that some people with a budget as tight as it gets can produce this kind of masterpieces. Don't get me wrong, this has nothing to do with films of the caliber of "Godfather", but it is pure entertainment. Mr Campbell is better than Elvis himself - the story of the King ending up in a retirement home is fantastic! Who else is there? JFK in black (black skin - not clothing).

The whole film is a perfect blend of a detective - thriller - horror - comedy, not failing in any of the genres. If it weren't for the rather "fading" and not "exploding" finale, I would have definitely give it 10 out of 10. One of my favorites.
