Hyena Road (2015)
10/10
Excellent Film. See it.
10 October 2015
This is excellent film about modern warfare with convincing battle scenes, ramped up tension and incredible locations. Who are the good guys? Who are the bad guys? Very hard to tell in Afghanistan as Canadian soldiers do their duty, to little effect. In my view it is a superior film to the much hyped American Sniper. The performances were all very convincing and Paul Gross's direction was swift and to the point. The atmosphere of working in a very foreign land for the Canadian soldiers is very apparent. I found I cared about what they were doing, as I was frankly trying to figure out their mission. If you enjoyed films like Zero Dark Thirty or The Hurt Locker, you should see this film.

X Company (2015–2017)
9/10
Great action, tension and history
22 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
The old question, 'What did you do during the war Daddy?', hasn't been very well answered for Canadians in the pop culture world. While Saving Private Ryan celebrates the American D-Day invasion, you'd be hard pressed to find the Canadian movie about Juno Beach, although on that same day, history tells us the Canadians advanced farther than any other nation. While the Alan Turing story has been beautifully told in 'Imitation Game', once again what Canadians working behind the scenes were doing is not a typical subject for film or TV.

X Company is a welcome addition to Canadian lore about World War 2. Yes there really was an X Camp in Ontario and they really did train spies for missions in Europe to help defeat Hitler. The talent that brought us Flashpoint, probably the best police series to ever come out of Canada, is behind X Company and they bring with them their precision story telling, dynamic action and tension. The first episode was a real 'edge of your seat' affair with valiant heroes, dastardly Nazis and compelling new TV characters. The seeds planted in the first episode promise to grow into a very exciting series. I don't expect the show to adhere too closely to actual history any more than most movies and TV shows about the war, but there no doubt there will be a kernel of truth, and entertainment abounding.

The show is anchored by the presence of actor Hugh Dillon. Dillon, so good in Flashpoint, returns to TV as a leader on X Company, steadying the hand of the young and in some cases, unlikely spies in the field. The cast of characters will develop as the show goes, but I have a feeling we shouldn't get too attached, as the missions they attempt appear to be quite deadly.

I look forward to each new episode of X Company, on what I expect will be a run as long as the war itself.

Street Legal (1987–1994)
Street Legal was a legal drama centered on a small law firm in Toronto.
3 October 2005
Street Legal was a classic of Canadian TV with crackling scripts, excellent performances and relevant story lines that took in the headlines of the day. Toronto was like a character on the series as the multi cultural nature of the city, both the positive and negative were dealt with on the show. The lawyer characters on the show had different areas of expertise which were often in conflict. Leon was a left wing democratic socialist, who at one point in the series ran for Mayor of Toronto. Others on the firm dealt with criminal or business matters. Juggling the firm's different interests was often a point of conflict. CBC's Street Legal is still fondly remembered today in Canada 10 years after it went off the air for its coverage of the issues mixed up with soapy sexy story lines that kept the viewers coming back. Chuck and Olivia became the most famous fictional TV couple in Canadian history with their on again, off again affair. At one time Street Legal ran on Friday nights after the popular comedies of The Kids In The Hall and Codco, which gave the network a power house line up.
