Bo Burnham: Inside (2021)
Yes.
This is the stuff. The dog's whatsits. The bee's knees. The syrup to my pancakes. The soy to my sauce. The blowtorch to my crème brûlée. It really is very good.
Thirteen (2016)
Terrible writing
Awful writing. Awful, just so very awful. 0/10. Jodie Comer is a gem, though, as ever. 9/10. So, 4.
Just SUCH bad writing, oh my god.
The Pursuit of Love (2021)
None too shabby
Thought this was a delight, I'm surprised at the low ratings. I'm not sure people realise the book this was based on was in turn based around real people... the Mitford's were a bonkers lot. Batty as it may seem, there's truth in there! Overall, lots of fun.
Broadchurch (2013)
Absolutely effing fantastic.
By far the best crime drama/murder mystery I've ever watched. Despite being a sad story, I've rewatched it multiple times - I just crave that top echelon British acting that we're famous for, and this has it in spades. Just oozing out the ears with talent and humility and grounded, undeniable performances.
When this came out I was thrilled to see Olivia Coleman finally getting the recognition she deserves (which she has, in the years since, continued to surpass with great aplomb and ever more international acclaim.) She is a revelation. Her reaction when she finds out whodunit... I have NO words. Just... god damn, she's spectacular. David Tenant is, as ever, top of his game and pulling off an amazing performance.
Urgh. So well done. I'm normally so excruciatingly picky and critical of actors/movies/series... but I'm going to watch it again.
I will say this review is primarily for S1, S2 was a smidge lacklustre, and I haven't seen S3.
Malcolm & Marie (2021)
Stage...ish.
The way it's written and performed is done more in the style of a stage production, not the normal naturalism you'd expect on screen. Can makes it seem overacted. I don't know, it's a stylistic choice... I just don't know if it's a choice the director intended to make. Someone here said it's like a collection of acting exercises, which is pretty accurate.
Didn't finish. Some might like it, some might not. Could feel the presence of some over-directing in it. Like the way Malcolm ate the mac and cheese. Eurgh, no. Stop. You're wasting your actors potential.
