Gangs of London (2020– )

Season 1 was a 10, Season 2 is disappointing
18 November 2022
Season 1 was mind-blowingly original and edge of your seat binge worthy, albeit the ending was quite ridiculous. Think of the first time you see Evans' The Raid or The Raid 2 movies. They are fantastic spectacles. After the long wait, Season 2 has disappointed greatly. A weak, predictable plot with a real lack of wow factor in terms of action and exciting camera work, and violence. There are some glimpses of amazing camera work like the first season, but it feels a lot more like a drama this time around than an action thriller. Some of the dialogue is truly dumb, which greatly detracts from the believability of this season. I am not sure what changed, were the writers or producers changed since season 1? That might explain the overall drop in quality. Still a great show, hoping they can make amends in Season 3.

Bad CGI, aimless, bland plot
22 August 2022
Awful. I had high hopes for this given the many good reviews, now I am questioning who exactly is reviewing this movie. Whoever has gotten the rights to the 'Predator' franchise has clearly 'Disnefied' it.

Truly abysmal CGI, it would have looked bad even 20 years ago. How on earth this passed in 2022 is beyond me. Bland, poor and exaggerated acting by the female protagonist perfectly accompanies the similar plotline. Halfway through the movie you are wondering, where is this going? Some mild events happen.

A real missed opportunity, and a pathetic movie if you value substance and a somewhat exciting plot in a movie.

Fantastically directed episode!

Just had to leave a review, this director is seriously talented! The music, cinematic angles, even the acting was all on point. Best episode of the series and I hope to se more from this director!

The Wheel of Time (2021– )

Embarrassingly cringeworthy from the get-go
27 November 2021
I have been waiting a while for this, given the huge budget thrown at it and its aim to be Jeff Bezos Game of Thrones.

How disappointing. The opening sequence is like something from a kids movie, complete with cringeworthy narrative, and terrible looking set and costume design. The ensuing chase scene - embarrassing cuts and edits with characters out of place, absolutely awful and unnecessary CGI backgrounds, and a real disjointed and unnatural feel.... I am astonished how bad it is, and I haven't even finished 5 minutes of the first episode.

Watching on... I just could not complete the first episode. I found myself baffled as to how they spent 'years' making this (apparently it was shot in 2018). The directing is atrocious. The CGI, when those beasts came out, was actually quite funny. I thought it was slapstick but apparently not. The silly magic twirl the protagonist does lol. This is embarrasing. Just shows you how difficult a task the early seasons of GOT, and the LOTR movies pulled off. They not only nailed these 'magic' effects, but also the CGI..

Absolutely awful, dumbed down, poorly produced, despite the big budget - an unwatchable mess, unless you are 12. I feel downright embarrassed and incredible sense of cringe towards anyone involved in this production.

Great show. let down at times with bad acting and writing
26 August 2021
Excellent show. The Japanese parts are masterfully crafted, directed and acted. As a fan of the Outrage trilogy, I was scouring the internet for something along the same lines, and on that note that side of this show is excellent.

I have to say, the black english actress really brings the show down. She is awful, not only in her casting which is not believable, but her consistently bad acting in each scene she is in just ruins it for me. The American guy is not far behind but at least he is trying to portray his character. I won't mention the other female protagonist, the annoying one we all know from Boardwalk Empire.

All in all, the Japanese elements of this drama are superbly crafted. If only the entire show revolved around the Japanese side of things, it would be a solid 10/10.

Watchable but cringe and repetitive

Dialogue is at times embarrassingly cringeworthy - examples, the commander, military etc. And the air traffic controllers. Dear lord what kind of idiot wrote the script.

Watchable nonsense to have on the in the background if you are cleaning the house.

Brilliant, ignore the idiots who cannot grasp the subtleties of season 4
14 June 2021
Fantastic show, always has been, with dark comedy, excellent music and sound effects, and visuals. The latest season 4, opens with what could be straight out of Gangs of New York, just excellent. I cannot understand the negativity, then again, these must be the same kind of idiots who watch and thereby fund the endless crap coming out of Netflix in recent years. This show is a masterpiece. It even has one of the Italian actors from the sublime Gomorrah La serie, the protagonist is great in his over the top role.

A predictable borefest
6 June 2021
Quite astounded at the raving 10 star reviews. While this is a watchable 'drama', yes it is more of a drama than anything close to a thriller or edge of your seat suspense thriller. Winslet's American accent is also atrocious at times. Overall, I found myself skipping through many of the boring scenes, you know the ones with the cuts of Rolling Rock in between them.

Subpar acting and mundane, recycled plot
4 June 2020
As with many of Willis's movies in the past few years, most have been straight to DVD and unfortunately utter trash. This is slightly above some of his more recent movies, but it is still a low-budget and disappointing affair.

Even despite my low expectations for this movie, during the beginning, I was surprised at the shockingly bad acting from the wife and protagonist, and also the kid. How the director allowed some of those cuts of the wife around the kitchen table to make the movie is beyond me, her expressions and acting were beyond bad and noticeably some scenes almost appeared as if they were an outtake or she herself figured it might be an outtake whilst acting, it was that bad. Similarly, even Willis let the show down with his attempt at crying in bed.

The editing and cut scenes were brutal at times. So much so that it lends to a lack of complete discontinuity, to an already simple plot. The one saving grace in this movie were the brothers - in particular the crazy on-edge brother - it was a fine performance from him, especially considering those around him had no charisma to work off.

The rest of the movie plodded along, until a point where I had to turn it off. Not recommended if you have any ounce of intelligence, skillful direction, and enjoy subtle plot-lines and fine acting from each and every character.

Sublime show with echos of Gomorrah la serie
21 March 2020
I just had to write something about this show. As a huge fan of Gomorrah La Serie, and indeed any of Sollima's short body of work, this show has lived up to my expectations given the previous immense quality of any production he is involved in.

You can see many subtle influences, such as the wonderfully creative and cinematic camera pans, to the consistently superb and effective soundtrack. The acting, effects, story-line -I could go on and on - it is all on point to a very high standard.

I cannot speak well enough about this masterpiece of TV drama. Absolutely riveting and fantastic and there is never a dull moment (the producers of Better Call Saul could learn A LOT). Highly recommended to watch this show and just compare it to the generic, over-budgeted trash that gets thrown at us from other networks (example, the aforementioned BCS, Altered Carbon season 2, and Westworld to name a few).

ZeroZeroZero in the clouds compared to much of the rubbish being released these days, and I hope the team involved go on to make many more productions. Great job from Sky Atlantic, Canal+ and Amazon - you can tell they poured money into it, but it pays off when talent is there to make use of it!

Awfully slow-moving, but at times exceptional
21 March 2020
I had high hopes for the two year hiatus to at least result in some gripping, suspenseful story-line.

The only interesting parts are few and far between (obviously everything Gus, Cartel and Nacho related). Since the entire overly long and dragged out ridiculous and unrewarding plot that was the Chuck story, they now have a new bore-fest theme - the Mesa Verde bank fiasco. With more and more ridiculous character developments such as Kim's complete U-Turn on being a competent lawyer.

Shaky start
30 January 2020
Richard Armitage, as always (for those who know him from The Hobbit) is fantastic. Without him this show would be, forgettable to say the least.

A couple of things early on (episode 1) have really disappointed me in terms of basic 'realism', namely the two phone calls with the bank. Both times, on the outgoing and incoming, there wasn't a single security question or verification done by the bank with the protagonist. The fact that this happened twice in the same episode really just killed it for me, terrible script-writing.

One of the worst movies in a long while
17 December 2019
Where to start with this one, how about don't. Truly terrible acting throughout, cheap effects and amateur cinematography. How this got made, or how this made it out of a college project, I have no idea.

I could do a better job making a film with a handheld, a couple of friends and a night in a woods. I could likewise choose a scarier location and some better lighting, and somehow work the effects better perhaps by using suspense and eerie, extended shots with nice angles. In fact I have done, but I wouldn't let my movie see the light of day, because I know it's not at the level that consumers deserve, just like this atrocious movie fails to live up to any decent level of expectancy.

Bland, almost unwatchable nonsene
9 December 2019
The many reviews on here are akin to to the many overrated Indian movies on IMDB, all with 10/10 user ratings, not reflecting the true worth of the films (which are junk).

This movie is nothing like the original, it is bland, very childish in its approach, simplistic and utterly a complete waste of opportunity to make a good sequel. I couldn't make it past the halfway stage. The point at which the small girl starts 'levitating' and visiting places in her mind/reality, oh dear.

Disregard the multitude of 9 and 10 ratings for this movie, they are clearly bots. Avoid this movie if you have intelligence, and if you enjoyed the masterpiece that was the original, and do not wish to spoil that memory with an utterly pathetic sequel.

Couldn't finish this one
11 October 2019
Within the first 5 minutes this movie becomes irritating and boring. They even have some kind of Ryan Gosling lookalike in the poster. Awful stuff. Do yourself a favour and watch Irreversible if you want an excellent French movie.

Awful acting, hard to recommend
11 October 2019
I was mildly expecting something of quality given the 6/7/100 average rating for this movie thus far, however what soon became apparent was transparent, amateur acting throughout, coupled with a student'esque cinematography which is weak and bland throughout. Hard to recommend wasting time watching this movie.

The reviews on here are, like many new 'indie' films lately, clearly posted by those involved with the production.

Terrible from start to... well I couldn't finish it. Utter trash, avoid at all costs.

This murdered my Sunday
16 June 2019
Incredibly bad acting throughout, lazy cinematography - from cheap, generic drone shots to terrible camera positions and angles (such as when they are lined up, and when they are digging a grave).

I would recommend reading a book or going outside for an hour or two, it will be time much better spent than watching this trash.

Notably terrible
12 June 2019
One of the worst movies I have seen in a long time. I won't waste many words on this review, as the poor production, camerawork, sound, and acting in this film does not warrant it.

If you are looking for an actually 'well-made', original, and actual watchable 'found-footage' movie, check out V/H/S and indeed it's sequel, they are both excellent attempts at the genre.

In summary, avoid watching this at all costs, if I could take back the time I spent watching it I still wouldn't - because I have sacrificed it for any of you who happen to read this review.

Well made documentary on a unique subject
3 June 2019
I am always on the lookout for the latest documentaries on true crime or related subjects, and I found this one, despite having never heard about this case (which always makes reading or watching something about the subject that much more interesting).

You can sense the Netflix production values and skills of those involved - it is very well edited, spaced and the interviews are very well interspersed with footage and a cohesive story-line.

During the first couple of episodes, I still had no idea regarding the protagonist's innocence or guilt, the series will lead your opinion one way, then completely drop a bombshell pointing to the other way (currently on the final episode and I am still on the fence) but both sides are really well portrayed and give the viewer a very tumultuous yet informed viewpoint of the entire picture, and what was going on.

It provides a great insight on both the raw violence, and effects of murders and drug-related fatalities, as much as it highlights the deficiencies of the media portrayal of these events, and the political tactics and string-pulling in the background.

The final two/three episodes seem a little drawn out and I feel it could have been condensed into 4 or 5 episodes. I have to laud the unbiased viewpoint of the series (compare it to something terribly biased such as the likewise Netflix-produced 'Knox' documentary), it is refreshing and really unusual subject, a highly recommended watch!

Ripping off Irreversible
19 April 2019
Have to agree with the many negative reviews, this show started off interesting (for around 5 minutes) then went drastically downhill. One aspect however I have failed to see mentioned is the blatant copying of Gaspar Noé's work.

The eery soundtrack might as well just have been ripped off the infamous 'club' scene in Irreversible. Likewise the cinematography (which at times in this ridiculous show is quite good) has blatantly taken aspects of Noé's french masterpiece, shaky camera, very good movement of angles and continous shots circling around; coupled with the score, when I first took notice I thought Noé was involved in some way.

I only watched this show in parts because my other half had it on. Have to laugh at the 9 and 10/10 reviews, what a sad, dumb world we live in these days.
