Wish (2023)
Go Stream "I'm A Star"
If you're going to make a Disney movie to pay homage to all previous Disney movies, the music should be out of this world.... And the music in Wish is just ehhh. There is one beautiful song called I'm A Star. I will listen to this song hundreds of times before I die and I'm so thankful it exists. (Knowing What I Know Now was also pretty good.)
But this isn't a song review it's a movie review and the movie was just okay unfortunately. It comes across derivative in that everything feels like a carbon copy of previous films rather than an homage. And the movie did not hold my almost 4-year-olds attention. He loved the goat but otherwise he was bored.
Oppenheimer (2023)
Snooze fest? I don't think so!
I didn't want to watch this film. I knew it wasn't for me. Way too long. Too boring. A war film? Absolutely not. Thank goodness my husband was adamant on giving it a go. I told him that if I fell asleep he was to leave me alone and let me have a nice nap.... Then I watched the movie. Incredible.
Why wasn't it boring? Because of the time jumps. Sure, they were confusing at first, but once I understood the different time periods and what was happening in each, they actually kept what could have been a boring docu-drama interesting.
I find it wild RDJ won all kinds of awards for it when his role wasn't exactly challenging. The amount of effort a woman has to put into a film to win an award... Well, let's just say it's significantly more than what I just witnessed (I love RDJ, Iron Man 😢, don't come for me).
Greatest character in the movie - Emily Blunt hands down. She made me guffaw before she even delivered her scathing lines.
Kung Fu Panda 4 (2024)
"Violence makes my tummy tingle."
It's time for Po to find a successor and become the spiritual leader of the Valley of Peace. But Po isn't ready to give up his title and move on from his life as dragon warrior. Po ends up on a quest to find the Chameleon with a fox who happens to be a major thief. This movie is one that parents can enjoy with their children. It's no Shrek or Monsters, Inc. Which are a couple of the best animated movies for all ages, but I enjoyed my time at the movies and I know my almost 4-year old did as well. There are so many good one-liners. Jack Black and Awkwafina's delivery is of course incredible. EGOT winner herself, Viola Davis, voices the villain and does an incredible job. She won the Grammy making her an historic EGOT recipient for the audiobook narration of her memoir. Why? Because her voice is that good. Finally, the violent children are the best part of the film.
Divergent (2014)
10 Years Later and Divergent Still Remains a 10
Divergent was a great obsession for me both in book and movie form when they first came out. Watching it in 2024, the film is definitely a product of its time. The Ellie Goulding of it all when they are walking to choose their factions. It sends me right back to those mid-2010s days. The thing that made some of these YA book to movie adaptions so great is the acting. In Divergent we have Ashley Judd, President Fitzgerald Grant, and Kate Winslet who were already incredible talents. Shailene Woodley, Miles Teller, Theo James, and Ansel Elgort have obviously shown their acting chops in the years since. I refuse to change my IMDB ratings so in 2014 when I was 26 years old and madly in love with Four I rated Divergent 10 out of 10 stars so a perfect movie it shall remain.
Damsel (2024)
Please, no more cheese.
Unfortunately, Damsel is a big disappointment for me. I love a strong heroine, a period piece, and dragons so combining them should be a sure win. However, I found Damsel to be heavy on the cheese and silly in the worst way. Much of the movie sees Millie Bobby Brown acting solo and the script had her just spelling out every piece of plot for us. It's not that difficult to understand and we don't need a play-by-play. If she could have just been quiet instead of screaming constantly, the main character would have been a lot better off. The best part for me was the dragon voiced by Shohreh Aghdashloo, who has an incredible voice. I'm ready for Enola Holmes 3 now!
Joker (2019)
Am I the only one?
I thought this movie was so boring! I kept hearing from people how good it was so I never expected it to be so dull. The last 15 to 20 minutes were riveting but didn't make up for the snooze fest that happened before.
I also feel like I've seen the Joaquin performance so many times before. The actor who loses a bunch of weight and dances in his underwear. It's been done. Let's see something different!
I know this is an unpopular opinion but I just thought I would share my differing view of the film.
