Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
I Appreciated it more second time around
You dont need me to point out the flaws of the trilogy they are well documented and plain to see. But if you are judging this film on its own merits then, as with The Last Jedi i don't see the argument for it being a poor film. Yes some of the narrative choices are bizzare in the context of the trilogy as a whole, but once you get past that like me you can appreciate the awesome set pieces and worthy conclusions for two of the sagas best characters in Rey and Ren. The final battle feels slightly hurried, buts delivers some big emotional beats whilst the final scene is (as a life long SW fan) everything i would have wanted.
The Christmas Chronicles (2018)
Kurt Russell could sell ice to the Eskimos
Make no mistake, this movie is utter hog wash. From the mis cast child actors to the creepy elves. Then theres the bludgeoning "true meaning of christmas" message it tries to drill home at every turn. But, and it's a big but, it has an ace up it's sleeve. Kurt Russell sells this like it's the last job he'll ever have (which isn't beyond the realms of possibility) oozing chisled Hollywood charisma out of every pore. What's even more impressive is the fact that he doesn't just take the pay cheque and dial in a performance, he smashes his Santa out of the park and looks like he's enjoying every second of it. Worth seeing for him alone.
Butterfly (2018)
Exceptionally written drama
This is a hard hitting well crafted drama that doesn't why away from its subject matter. Characters are well written and extremely well acted. As a parent i find myself agreeing with the reactions as the plot develops. Excellent
Love, Simon (2018)
Packs a punch!
When I watch a movie mostly I just want to be moved.. and this moved me big time. Funny, Everyones on the top of their games, killer soundtrack and heavy hitting gut punches. Highly recommended
A Quiet Place (2018)
Film of the year contender
Reading through some of the negative IMDB user reviews it seems to me that most of them come from hard-core horror fans who probably count saw 4 amongst their favourite movies. If your looking for cheap scares and shock gore stay away. But if your in the market for sweat inducing suspense, nail shredding tension building and gut punching emotional wallops then watch A Quiet Place. Not just a fantastic horror it's a film of the year contender for me.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
Star Wars for a new generation
As a lifelong fan of the saga, halfway through TLD after flirting with disappointment in the movie I decided to stop comparing it to the originals or waiting for a classic moment on par with say, the Death Star attack in A New hope. There is so much to enjoy about this new trilogy; the whole franchise hinged on the casting of Rey and in this movie (as with the last hour if FA) she comes to life. In fact the whole suite of new characters all hit home for me aside from possibly general Hux who feels a tad one note. Kylo Wren must surely be one of the best characters in the entire saga. The way the move keeps you guessing throughout which side he will choose is a masterstroke. Whilst there is undoubtedly flaws (certain scenes/characters feel completely out if place in the SW universe, a questionable comedy balance) the final hour is pure Star Wars heaven. As for our heroines, I'm struggling to understand the fan criticism of Luke's character developments, it feels like were seeing the result of 40 years of growth and I for one thought this was the most rounded version of Luke we've seen. Leia is treated with the respect you'd expect and Chewbacca chews plenty of scenes up. I understand certain criticisms from SW fanatics but I for one am happy to go with this new version of our galaxy far far away and cant wait to wee where the journey ends. If Rogue One was a SW film made for the purists then this is SW for a new generation!
