The X Files: Babylon (2016)
No, no and NO to Agents Einstein and Miller
Let me tell you one thing. I love The X- Files. I do. I have a big collection and watched every single episode several times. I tried the best I can to enjoy the tenth season while keeping my expectations low, and it more or less worked with every episode - besides Babylon.
I know even the original series had a few terrible episodes ("3", "Fight Club"...), but this... at one point I just started skipping forward, a thing I had never ever done before.
I'm not gonna talk about the bad decision to turn this into comedy or about the Islamist thing in general. The intro scene was tense and gut- wrenching. Props to Chris Carter for trying out this more than controversial topic. I understand the problem with Season 10: they had too much to say and not enough time to realize it.
I'm not gonna talk about the mushroom scene, either, which was rather painful to watch, although that's certainly not Duchovny's fault.
The real reason I hate this episode and couldn't stand watching it were the new agents Einstein and, uh, Miller. Yeah, he's so dull and meaningless that I even have trouble remembering his name.
The idea of "cloning" our pair was used several times in the original series and already started getting lame back THEN. At least it always made some sort of sense - here we had actors in a movie, there we had some sort of world where everyone has an identical counterpart somewhere. But Einstein and Miller? They are just there. And them being there is not funny. It's just incredibly annoying. Especially Einstein. She does nothing but b*tching around and appearing arrogant. What worked with Scully certainly doesn't work with her.
And wanna know why? Because Mulder and Scully are supposed to be unique. Having so many clones ruins their uniqueness, it ruins THEM, even offends them. It would've been less terrible if Einstein and Miller appeared only in one episode, but no, seems like they're gonna be regular guests now.
I mean, I get what they're trying to do. But weren't season 8 and 9 lesson enough that our beloved Mulder and Scully can't just be replaced? The X-Files is all about them, about their charm and their chemistry. That can't just be replaced by two random new actors. Trying this is extremely lazy character creation and an offense to the original series, to the fans. Was it really necessary to do a revival if they're only going to replace Anderson and Duchovny eventually?
The X Files: Closure (2000)
One of the most emotional pieces of TV history
Fans of the X-Files have been waiting for this episode from the very first season, worrying for Samantha alongside of Mulder, wondering what had happened to her after all. In season 7, we all finally get closure.
A random viewer might not get why people are praising this episode so much. It's important to understand that this is not just a random little ghost story, but the climax of a long, long search for the truth. And the structure of this episode is excellently built upon this thought.
I feel like everything was perfect about it. The writing, the acting (especially Duchovny's improvisation that made the whole ending scene so much better), the music... nobody (including the writers, I guess), would have ever guessed this was going to happen, and I really appreciate this unpredictability.
In the end, everyone needs to decide for themselves whether the conclusion of the story is to be understood metaphorically or not. Either way, it is incredibly moving and easily one of the most dramatic and emotional pieces of TV history. There's so much brutal realism, so much tragedy and hope. Right after watching this episode I felt like my heart was getting ripped out, and the next evening, when I was laying in bed and thought of it again, the tears started rolling uncontrollably, and I'm an adult guy that doesn't easily get teary at all.
That's because the X-Files are more than just a silly evening entertainment. The lovable characters and the great story stimulate us to start thinking about our own lives, our own surroundings. And everyone capable of appreciating that is going to appreciate this episode too.
