School Spirits (2023)
Doesn't need to be an original plot to be an original series
The show proves that a cliche plot line can be fresh and entertaining.
They're very good at throwing you off, and it's really interesting for people who are usually really good at guessing shows.
It's going to keep you entertained, guessing until the end.
I like the characters original feelings and realistic outlook as opposed to thinking like a typical movie or TV show character.
The therapist has kept my attention throughout the entire show. I didn't realize he was the gentleman from so many comedy movies. He grew up and I think a lot of these actors are starting to show their talent, also this is the first time Netflix hasn't tried to shove gender down our throat. It's a little more subtle this time which is nice because as someone who genuinely doesn't care if other people are gay or straight, having it forced on you through Netflix for a year or two was pretty frustrating.
Carnival Row (2019)
A new styled story for an old genre
Review then story summary: I genuinely liked this show. It had fresh takes on many old stories, twists, gruesome scenes without being 'too much', love, not too many old tropes. The worst thing the industry can do (in my opinion) is keep the old pace of film and show where it's a 6 month build up to the relationship or unexpectedly deciding to do something different even though we know it's going to follow old tv show patterns... This show didn't do that. It's a really interesting and fun to watch show. It doesn't keep you stuck in one story but many, it doesn't give out too much detail but does give background to satisfy most questions, and it gives you magic but not an overwhelming amount. This isn't like an annoying netflix show that shoves PC culture down your throat but allows what is going on to just go on and you infer what you want. It's more than worth a watch, I'd say set apart some time and actually enjoy it. Not a 'background white noise' tv show. Enjoy!
Summary w/o spoilers:
Class war, systemic racism, hating of immigrants, industrial revolution. Turn of the century 'Burg instead of England. Basically a Russian oppressive government we never really deal with fights for supremacy against the British military circa ww1 era with magic mixed in (over an island full of natural resources). That's simply the background explanation for the island filled with magic and different types of species of mystical creatures. The humans from England fight for the freedom (allegedly) and rights of the creatures but it's evident from the beginning they look down on them. The Russians basically fight for the island itself, the creatures be damned. During this time a Soldier meets a pixie, same old story. A detective (inspector) for the British style government is sympathetic and respects the people from the island who have taken over an entire street in the main city, taking the worst jobs and being treated as second class citizens. Think... Irish and italian immigrants during the same time in NYC or of London. The Mafia started due to similar reasons (sorta) so it's not shocking the mystics wouldn't have a type of one as well, which rears its head in this show. The street where the mystics primarily live is dubbed Carnival Row -or 'The Row'- and from there the plot thickens into a story of deceit, horrific murder, magic (but not in a stifling sort of way), investigation, prejudice, class war, flashbacks of battles long since fought, and much more.
The Flemish Bandits (2018)
Definitely worth a watch, shut off all subtitles.
Interesting but...shut off subtitles and you'll be able to enjoy it. A period piece that sticks to the time and the relevancy of the weapons and behaviors of the people of the time. It's very interesting
How to Talk to Girls at Parties (2017)
Different yet good, a breath of fresh air
It was funny while still being original. You definitely were not going to guess the ending and the entire concept while being in the 70s was just outstanding. Affresh look at an old idea and new original content just made me really enjoy this movie.
