Succession (2018)
Love to hate them
I've just binged all three seasons. Initially I thought they were all a bunch of pr*cks, barring the lucky dope that is Gregg but something just sucked me in. The writing is excellent, it's such a brilliantly entangled story that's raw with hatred, lies and false loyalty. It feels completely acceptable to constantly weigh up how much you hate each of them episode by episode. The last episode of season three is an absolute masterpiece!
Dune (2021)
Heavy sci-fi isn't my fave, but this........
I watched the 1984 film and my good god, it was awful. I didn't have a clue what was going on and felt like I'd wasted some precious hours of my life!
I hoped that this would be better and thankfully is hugely improved! It's actually very, very good! It's one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. Not even a slight hint of poor/obvious cgi, it genuinely looks like the spaceships, technologies and vast landscapes are real. Yes, the story can seem slow but there's a lot of plot to explain so those moments of stillness are welcomed.
I would advise watching it on the big screen, it's made for that sort of immersive experience.
I can't wait to see part 2!
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (2013)
Really not good!
I've never read the books so can't compare but this film is awful. Plot holes galore, weird pacing, dodgy acting: it's got it all unfortunately.
American Horror Stories: The Naughty List (2021)
It's actually good!
I think some people are missing the point a bit here. This episode shows that influencers are total garbage that want likes and followers for anything, even horrible things, and they eventually get their comeuppance. There's no bad story, it's great to see some tw*ts get slaughtered!
A Discovery of Witches (2018)
It's not good!
Yes, the scenery is beautiful and it's well shot but my goodness, the story is absolute rubbish! It seems to skip through the series entirely missing parts out. For ancient creatures, they're idiots!
Last Christmas (2019)
Definitely not a 10
I absolutely love Christmas films, I love that warm fuzzy feeling you get when all of the twinkly lights are shown and the main character finds love and all of that crap.
This film is not that.
I love Emma Thompson and was hugely optimistic going in but I was shockingly let down.
The George Michael songs are wonderful but they chose really bizarre songs at odd moments in the film, ones that didn't suit the scene at all.
The plot is not good. Yes it's predictable but that's not my problem with it. The film makes a big deal about certain points and then entirely dismisses them until things are wrapped up neatly with a Christmas bow at the end.
There are some truly heartwarming parts but not nearly enough to rescue it. It's a shame really, I was hoping for another Love, Actually.
I Am...: I Am Nicola (2019)
Powerful and uncomfortable
This isn't fast paced because emotional abuse isn't fast paced. It's subtle and slow and uncomfortable. Although some of the camera work is a bit jerky, I thought this was a very accurate depiction of what emotional abuse can be like.
The Lion King (2019)
Not great
Visually, it is stunning. It's actually hard to believe that it's CGI rather than real life. Other than that, the film isn't good. It's almost scene for scene and word for word exactly the same as the original, which seems entirely pointless. It's so safe that it's boring. The other huge issue is that none of the animals show any facial emotion, which adds to the flatness of the film, unfortunately.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017)
So so terrible
I get that the film is tongue in cheek but it honestly is rubbish. Zero humour, too much terrible cgi and sooooo many awful plot details.
Avoid!
