Silver Lining (2005)
Fantastically visual
A fantastic little film. This film had more emotion in it than most feature films that i see these days.
The makers were obviously going for a very stylized look and it worked well t convey the gloom of the main characters frame of mind. The sky sequence was jaw dropping.
I cannot recommend this short enough, it was, in my opinion the best short shown at the Galway Film Fleadh recently. How the makers managed to incorporate so many technical elements on what i am sure was a small budget is a mystery.
Well done and whats next!
Rosebud (2004)
The most beautiful short film i have ever seen!
This short film is one of the most beautiful that i have ever seen.
It was filmed on location in Glendalough Co Wicklow, Ireland, as i recognize the settings. It definitely captures the scenery fantastically well and i have to say it was magical.
The young girl who plays the central character was excellent and a great casting choice as you couldn't but fall in love with her. She has a fantastic innocence about her that the part really needed and she carried it off excellently.
The boy, played by Cian McCormack was great also, i first saw him in GAngs of New York as the young Leonardo Di Caprio and he was even better in that.
All in all this is a gem of a film that obviously had its inspiration from The Wizard of Oz. The look of the film is definitely that of Lord of the Rings. A great achievement.
True Lives: Conrad Gallagher - A Flash in the Pan? (2003)
The best single profile documentary i have ever seen!
Watch this documentary if you ever get the chance. I saw this programed the SECOND time it aired on Irish Television. I had heard about it when it was screened the first time, as had everyone else in Ireland as Conrad Gallagher was front page news at the time... and still is on occasion, even though he now lives in South Africa! That is what a fascinating subject the man is.
I was expecting a programed that was would be full of celebrity types going on about the celebrity chef, given that most of Conrads headlines in the papers saw him draped around some super-model or the likes of Bono and Michael Flatley, however it was a brilliant viewpoint and insight into the man. I have no doubt that a film could be made about this guy's exploits around the globe. Some of the stories are right out of an episode of the sopranos.
Nostradamus and Me (2004)
A wonderful little film
I saw this film at the Galway Film Fleadh the year it won best short film. I have to say that i thought the direction was fantastic and the performances from the key cast members were very memorable. Both of the main cast are definitely names to watch out for.
The final shot over the cliff was mesmerizing and i for one would like to find myself there if i was waiting for the end of the world to happen. The kiss was definitely a great payoff, done with great enthusiasm's!!
I can only assume that the film was shot on film, and i have heard that the DOP won an award at the Tribeca Film Festival for his work on this film and i must say.... well deserved.
I would recommend this film to anyone who was a teenager in the 1980s. It brought back some great memories and some scary ones.
