Pieces of April (2003)
This movie is one of my favorite movies
I love this movie. I rented this movie because I had a secret Dawson's Creek addiction. I wanted to see Katie Holmes in another role. I hoped to see a film that I wasn't embarrassed to enjoy, and Pieces of April filled that hope. This film has fun, true to life, bittersweet characters and moments. There are some cheesy cringe inducing moments, but just deal with them and enjoy the rest of it. Patricia Clarkson is wonderful. Alison Pill is perfect as the perfect sister. The family in this film is very true to life. Sean Hayes is hilarious. I have watched this film many times and I am always willing to watch it again with someone who hasn't seen it yet. Recently, a friend described this film as "dark". I guess she is right, but I had always thought of the film as a comedy. Not everyone will love this movie, but for someone that is looking for a film that is fun to watch but yet intelligent... this is the movie for you.
Failure to Launch (2006)
could have been better, but was okay.
I thought this movie was okay, but would have been better if the unrealistic slapstick moments had been left out, or enacted in a more realistic way. While watching the film, I could get into the predictable plot, and enjoy it. However there would be a "Something about Mary" type moment, that seemed to me, to not quite fit. It was fun to see Sarah Jessica Parker post Sex and the City. At times her character in this film seemed similar to Carrie, but with flatter hair. Whatever. Kathy Bates and Terry Bradshaw are very fun to watch. If you want to see a cute, predictable, romantic comedy, you'll probably like this film.
Spooky House (2001)
Not a good movie for the whole family
This is the worst movie that I have ever seen. The only reason I give it a 2 rather than a 1 is that my nephew thought parts of it were funny. Afterwards he gave the movie an 8, but on further questioning, movies that he liked got a 10 and movies that he didn't like got an 8. I watched this movie with my brother, sister-in-law, nephew and Mom. None of us, other than my nephew, could believe how stupid it was. Parts of it did not make any sense. The plot was predictable. The acting was less than stellar. I can't imagine why Ben Kingsley made this movie. He must have needed some extra cash. Kids movies are often unrealistic, and one just enjoys them for the fun of it, but the only fun we got out of this was laughing in disbelief at how bad this movie was. There were several "pee" jokes, and we had to spend the next few days listening to my nephew scream "I gotta pee!" over and over again. This movie might be okay for young kids, but will NOT be fun for the whole family.
