Awful soundtrack
9 December 2023
So i didn't realise this was a film based on a play based on a book based on a news item. I expected a campy, lesbian rom-com (based on the film poster) not an agonising angry-woman-married-to-man-boy story with the most annoying, awful piano music played by a one-fingered pianist with most of the keys missing.

Honestly, skip this. The single redeeming feature about the whole movie is the man-boy;s ecological quest to increase a butterfly population. Other than that, the performance of all three leads are mostly wooden. You can tell their hearts aren't into it. The actors playing the graduating kids, however, are really very good.

Awful. 2/10.

Fascinating

This has to be the top show in its genre (vs Lego, play doh etc). It's marvelous to see such talented artist producing work with such speed, and while I rarely agree with the judging, It is nevertheless fascinating. To have such a diverse group of artists compete for what is a marvelous opportunity ( and a relatively small sum of money, considering the amounts art is auctioned for) is such diverse mediums is astonishing. Fabric vs print vs sculpture vs painting is incredible to watch, and I find myself without loyalty to any one artist, but to each individual work. Watch this if you get a chance, you will not be disappointed.

I can't fault this brilliant depiction of the drials of being a doctor in the NHS. Absolutely perfect performances all round. Another seven seasons, please.

Heartwarming

One of those films which has almost no plot, yet is hard to look away from. Timothy Spall is excellent. A couple of surprises, one of which is the quality of his wife's vegetables in the far north of Scotland.

bearable

...if only for Toyah Wilcox. Honestly, terrible, slow-paced tale of a "scientist" trying to find evidence of ghosts. There are, it has to be said, some terrible acting performances, and if the stilted dialogue is representative of pre-war Britain, then I'm surprised we got anything done.

Weirdness

This has to be one of the weirdest films I've ever seen. Kept me captivated by its sheer strength of storytelling. I did not expect the outcome.

The more things change...
31 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The more they stay the same. This is an entertaining film if you're fine with the dubious morality of 'the upper class' . Everyone but the thickie policeman and barman are ex Oxbridge and forgive each other the most heinous crimes -- kidnapping and the theft of priceless jewellery because turning them over to the police wight cause a scene. The production is full of inept hotel residents drafted in at the last moment when there are clearly two dozen professional actors in all the minor roles.

Wooing 101: Grab the girl, ignore her cries of 'no, no' and force kisses on her. Seconds later she'll be in love with you and won't press charges. Is this where Donnie Trump got his technique from?

Best comedy ever
28 January 2017
This show made me sick. No, honestly, I was eating my lunch watching it and I laughed so hard I made myself sick. I'd never heard of it until the hate group 'One Million Moans' started a campaign to take it off the air and if they hate it, it must be good. It is truly awesome. Brilliant comedy and they set the punchlines up perfectly. No, don't look so surprised.

The episode that had me in stitches was 1.02, the school photographer. Honestly, give this show a try and you won't regret it. Thanks, One Million Moans, for the excellent recommendation.

This will go down on my 'comedies to watch again and again' and will join such gems as 'Outnumbered' and 'Inbetweeners'.

Awful
15 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Gee. If I hadn't been with my partner I'd have walked out after half an hour. Only afterwards did I discover he felt the same way. We could have gone home and been more scared by an obscure movie on the horror channel.

We knew we were in for a bad film when all the tropes started being thrown in. Seventies style breath music? check. Puritans? check. Instant farming? check. "Don't go into the woods"? check. Paedophilia? Check.

Honestly, the trailer has all the best bits of the film in one minute. Watch the trailer. The trailer is fabulous. Unfortunately, it doesn't have much relevance to the film. The 'horror' the trailer implies is never forthcoming, unless it's the terrible mash-up of olde-engishe and modern contractions. And utter cleanliness on a 17th century farm.

Endorsed by the Satanic Temple? What a bunch of losers.

Tedious
3 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I really wanted to like this film. It took me months to track down but I finally got it from Amazon (It was 'out of stock' for months). I wish I hadn't. As a practitioner of BJJ I was hoping for some inspirational rolling but the BJJ was only a small part of the film. Neither documentary nor fiction, it teeters across the line of both and achieves the benefits of neither. There are long periods of nothing at all (watching Candy walk along the street, for example). Larry himself is outstanding, the other characters less so, and when Danny talks about the philosophy of Jiu-jitsu, it jars with his drug-taking, alcoholic binges. The police detective was obnoxious.

A real shame.

Continuity error - Larry and Darren are rolling with Larry wearing his blue belt long before he was awarded it.

A Fun Romp
8 September 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This film will never win any prizes but it was fun to watch and the plot advanced fairly quickly. Some jokes, some slapstick -- and a completely failed urine-in-a-beer-can set up that had no pay-off. Would it have been so hard to have someone drink it? The film is ramped from a 5 to a 7 by the superb performance of Richard Ayoade, who I honestly think could make the word 'hello' hilarious. While pretty much everything about the film is predictable, even to the point of the recycling of several catchphrases from other films (and I think 'the wife' was underutilised -- she could have made a brilliant Ripley-esque character), It was fast-enough and witty enough to make it worthwhile.
