Lakposhtha parvaz mikonand (2004)
Great movie
Really liked this movie although I did not know what the main idea or plot of the movie was suppose to be. However, I do know the focused of the movie was on Kurdish children during a war. There did not seem to be many parents present throughout the film. There were adults but none of them were parent figures. A lot of the kids listened to Satellite, one of the older kids in the group. Satellite was the one to watch over the kids and make sure that they eat something. In this movie a lot of the kids were crippled in some type of way. However, that did not stop them from their daily tasks. The kids are still very active even with their deformities. Even though I liked Turtles can Fly, Agrin's family situation was depressing, but it also added a lot of depth to the story. I also liked how they don't tell you exactly what happens but they let you figure it out as the movie progresses.
Ip Man (2008)
Great!
The fighting is really good. They were different and showed of many fighters and not just Ip, even though he was the best. I have been saying the name of this movie wrong for a long time and did not realize it until I watched the movie. I thought it was I.P. Man but it is Ip Man. I also liked how they added extra information like how Bruce Lee was a student of Master Ip. On the other hand, some thing that confused me was at the beginning of the movie Ip had a lot of money and even gave his brother a lone, but he never had a job. No one in the family seemed to have a job but they were living very comfortably. There also was not that many women. There was Ip's wife and a few factory workers, but not much else. I would have liked to see more women and the roles they might have played
Paradise Now (2005)
It was good
Paradise now is about two friends who are preparing for a suicide bombing. However, there is never an explosion, and that makes the ending indecisive. At the end of the movie said is siting on a bus full of soldiers and the camera zoomed into his eyes. Then the screen turns white. I thought that was very dramatic, and though the explosion is not shown, I think it still happened. Said seemed to be set on going through with his suicide weather he killed people or not, but I believe that he thought he would avenge his father in the process. Overall I liked the movie but it had a very slow beginning, so it was hard to get into it at first. I also noticed that there was not any background music. I feel that if there was music it would have held my interest better in the beginning, but I am not to sure if it would have made much of a difference.
Tuya de hun shi (2006)
Tuya's Marriage
I would not say that I particularly liked or disliked Tuya's Marriage. This movie is listed as a romantic comedy, though there was romance, the movie was not that funny. There were only two moments where I might have laughed. On the other hand, the movie does hold my attention so much that I would watch it again. I think watching it again would give me a better understanding of what I have sees and possibly catch more "funny" moments.Something I found interesting is how Tuya is able to arrange her own marriage. Usually when you think of an arranged marriage, it is the parents not the persons getting married who sets up the marriage. Not only does she have control of who she marries but she also discusses terms and agreements within the marriage. The ending is also interesting because it is unclear and keeps you guessing. That may be the reason why I or anyone else would want to watch Tuya's Marriage again, to try and find the answers to some unresolved questions.
Xi you: Xiang mo pian (2013)
Not my favorite, but funny
I do not know if I liked Journey to the West or not. It was certainly different from other movies that I have seen. It was also overly dramatized, but I guess that is what makes the movie funny. Something that I do like about this movie is the reverse gender role. Usually, in movies, there is a guy trying to save a helpless girl; however, Duan, the female lead, is stronger and more capable Sanzang, the leading male. She is also the leader of her demon slaying party and saves Sanzang many times. On the other hand I did not like romance part of the Journey to the West. It seems forced and unnecessary. In the movie, they do not build to being in love, it just happens out of the blue.
Okuribito (2008)
Departures
Departures is an okay movie about a former orchestra cellist who has to move back home, to the countryside, with his wife. Diago, the husband and main character, finds a job as a traditional mortician. However dealing with the dead is considered a shameful job. Though being a mortician is shameful in a lot of cultures. I thought the way Diago prepares a body for a funeral was interesting; however, I would not want to do it myself. On another note, I did not care too much for the wife. I understand that she was trying to be supportive, but she did not seem like a real person to me. The only time she really got upset is when she found out that Diago was mortician. However, that might just be a cultural difference. From this movie the wife seems to take care of the husband and be a "dutiful wife", but in the US women are more outspoken.
Ajeossi (2010)
It was good but.....
I liked the movie and the actions scenes were entertaining. The main character Cha Tae- sik has a sad make story and that is why I feel he wanted to save So-mi, a little girl and his only friend. However, there was a big plot hole in the story. There was a scene they put So-mi to sleep with drugs and it looks as if they are about to remove her eyes, but they later showed us that they removed someone else's eyes. Even though I was happy to see her alive, I was upset to how So-mi was conveniently free, with no one else around her, at the moment Cha Tae-sik was about to kill him self. Though the movie is already two hours long, I felt that they could have made it a little longer to explain how So-mi got free.
Whale Rider (2002)
Fantastic!
Whale Rider had a slow start at first, but I really enjoyed the story and became invested in the main character, Pai. Though the movie did have whales as a cultural aspect of the film, I thought the movie was going to be mainly about whales. I was presently surprised to see it was about a little girl, Pai, who wants to be the next tribe leader. However Koro, her grandfather and current leader, believes that it is only a man's position to lead the tribe. In my eyes, Koro's value in tradition was grater than the his relationship with Pai. That made me sad. She was desperately trying to get her grandfather to notice her and at least take her into consideration as the next leader. On another note, while I was watching Whale Rider, I could not help but compare this movie and Disney's Moana because they both have Māori influence. Watching this movie helped me understand some of the costumes in Moana and Moana helped me better understand the ending of the movie. To be honest if I had not seen Moana, I would have been really confused during the last clip.
Metro Manila (2013)
Great Film
Metro Manila is about a family that struggles to survive and the sacrifices that have to be made. Overall I really enjoyed the film. While struggling with poverty, Metro Manila shows how a man and a woman provide for the family, and the kinds of jobs that are available. It is interesting to see how the roles of men and women are a little different in the Philippines, than they are in the United States. In the Philippines, the movie, depicts a woman's role as a homemaker that does not work, or there is little opportunity for work. Unlike in the United States, many women peruse a career/work or takes care of the house and has a full time job.I also enjoyed the ending. I did not expect the ending to be carried out the way it was, but I felt that it did the movie justice. I would not have changed it because the themes of family and sacrifice are tided together in such a way you can not help but feel moved
