Dhoom 2 raises the Bar
26 November 2006
I was expecting a lot from this one. This one seems to have everything right. Its a relief that it fulfills most of the expectations. The movie definitely raises the bar for all the Bollywood movie to come.

It starts with a train robbery by Hrithik as Aryan aka 'A' somewhere in the deserts. Mr A is a master thief who specializes in robbing the rare, perfect and priceless stuff from all over the world... He meets Aish on one of his heist in India and they decide to work as a team. On the other hand Abhi, Uday and Bips are planning a trap on him. Post intermission, the whole setup is in Brazil for the grand Finale and a couple of twists in the tale.

The story is simple as a cat and mouse game. What makes it interesting are the robberies and the techniques used. The heists are in league with steal, MI-2 (esp the diamond one). Then there is Hritik, Bips and Aish.. All the newcomers are stunning and fits the bill as cool, stylish with razor sharp dialogs. Acting wise, Abhishek had the ground set due to the prequel and he delivers dynamite. His one liners and the conversation with Uday are the soul of the movie. Uday is good but he didn't have much to do as per the story. He shud have given more footage. Hritik impresses as a calculating, stylish thief. Aish is convincing in the emotional scenes. Bips impresses in the first half and is wasted in second half.

The movie could have been better if there would have been a bit of character development and the last robbery being the best. It came as a sort of anti climax because i was expecting it to be tougher than the previous ones. Also, as in dhoom prequel, the heist were not engraved as it could have been and there were few misses here and there. The songs are good only if u watch them on the screen with the movie. They wont last on their own for long...

Overall, A must watch if u like stylish action over a weekend!!!

Why did it fail?
15 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this one yesterday, and after seeing this i had to think a long time about why the hell did it fail at the box office. I mean, if I would have got a screenplay like this I would have definitely predicted it to be a Superhit material.

About the story, it is a typical love triangle as you think it is. It starts with Akshay (as Agastya) in space with his girl friend talking about friendship with Salmaan (as Suhan) and then it proceeds about the happening on their life. Salmaan is Preity's ex hubby who wants his wife to get married to any one else so that he do not have to give him a hefty divorce settlement allowance. In comes akki that is madly in love with the lady and spits of everything in front of Salmaan not knowing his real identity. What follows next is a hilarious ride of both the guys trying that preity comes to Akshay. In the meantime, Salmaan starts feeling the old love all over again (especially after he knows that he is a father too) The end is all too predictable but with one beautiful twist.

There are not many reasons for this movie to fail. Here this was, a movie with dynamite performance by the main leads, beautiful songs, excellent cinematography and all too twists to keep you at the edge, but still it failed.

The first reason for it to fail is the long musical flashback sequence of Salmaan and Preity. It would have been plus only if the song might have been more catchy. You cant have a romantic song for 10 minutes and expect everyone to sit through it. Then there were those light effects. Very well picturised, but they came in abundance. Sometime you start getting the feel that the cast is not good enough (which the are) to give the emotions and hence they are being amplified by these effects. The length of the movie is also a minus. The whole thing should have been finished off in 2 and a half tops. The viewers would not sit through all the pain for 3 hrs.

This is one movie that could have been a wonder, a movie that might have fulfilled Salmaan's dream of Filmfare for best actor(it may still bring one for Akshay), but its all this small mistakes/loose ends that sunk the ship. We cant call this one too spicy or too sweet. It is all in there. Its just that its not at the right moment.
