The Mandalorian (2019)
Star Wars at its best
What an awesome show. It's a space western feelgood sci-fi political gunslinger drama Star Wars-fanboy series from hell! An absolute must watch if you're even remotely into Star Wars. The Mandalorian explores a lot of fan favorite and expanded universe stuff, but also answers a lot of Star Wars questions and trivia that never makes it to the big movie plots. And it features a lot of fan favorite characters from The Clone Wars or even from Legends. You can tell the writer really knows his stuff. It's a show that is less about the good an the bad, struggling for the throne of the galaxy. But more about the struggle between the good, the bad and the ugly reality of living in a desolate outskirt, far away from "the civilized core". It's a story about "simple men, trying to make their way in the galaxy".
Joker (2019)
Insanely good
This movie is about so many things. It's about a man and his struggle with mental illness and loneliness and his attempts to make it in this life, to so something he likes and to be happy. But it's also about brutal capitalism and corrupt politics. And as an extra, it sheds a whole different light on Batman and the Gotham scene. Though this movie doesn't retcon anything, it forces you to requestion a lot of things. Even the events of the film itself.
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Allright
A lot of people were criticizing this movie and I had very low (or no) expectations when I went to see it. But I genuinely liked it. Without wanting to spoil too much, there's a few interesting Star Wars locations that finally make an appearance in the movie universe: Corellia, Kessel, The Maw... And I liked the actors. I didn't find the plot that predictable, but it's true that the director crammed a lot of stuff in there and maybe it would've been okay to leave some out. But some new characters, like L3, were refreshing. And the movie, although not with Harrison, is an addition to the Han Solo character: especially to his rough exterior vs Good Guy on the inside. It wasn't as good as Rogue One, and I think Lucasfilm should stick to movies where the original actor isn't required, but still glad I saw it.
Tommy (1975)
Raw musical movie
The great thing about this movie is it's rawness. Objectively, musical movies like Moulin Rouge or Blues Brothers are much more refined. But The Who's Tommy is very raw: in my opinion, the scene transitions are not always perfect, the recording material and post-production does not live up to modern standards and the set-up is sometimes a bit bizarre. But all this gives the movie and edge, supported by the edgy music of the Tommy album itself. If you ask me, it is much better than some more renowned musical movies like Chicago, or even Pink Floyd's The Wall.
