Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022)
Resplendent hug of a movie!
A New Era is just the kind of simple, goofy, emotional and heartwarming movie we needed right now! It's such a pleasure to see this lovable cast getting another go, this time in a more expensive film. The South of France was shot exquisitely and the costumes were especially great.
Lunn's music was so uplifting as usual and some of his tunes to explore the silent and talkie conflict and the Earl's confusion about his parentage was so great to hear.
The plot points utilised in this sequel is so much better than the previous one. The final few minutes was peak Downton the show in my opinion. Hoping to see a third. Missed Henry Talbot, but boy did Mary show restraint!
This Is Us: Us (2022)
Why did it have to go out with a whimper?
I generally don't write negative reviews. Wouldn't dream of writing one for a show I loved so passionately like This is Us. However, if fans don't hold the show accountable, who will?
Did we really need to have an ending which was so uneventful? I get what the people who are finding positives with the episode are saying, and trust me, i get it too. I just don't get why it needed to be in the very last episode of such a great show. All of us had expectations, and i am not saying it's possible to fulfill all of them. But to give us absolutely nothing of the future? No lines for some of the important characters of the show? So much time spent on seeing flashbacks when this show had done so beautifully on many occasions, previously? No, it didn't sit right with me.
People won't be talking of this episode when they talk of how great This is Us was. They will speak of The Train, or The Cabin or Memphis. I wish we could have parted with a better episode. Nevertheless, thanks for all the good times and the highs and lows. Will miss the Pearsons.
This Is Us: The Night Before the Wedding (2022)
If it is meant to be, it will!
Six years of yearning for them to find their way back to each other and the writers find an authentic way to deliver it. This episode was as close to perfection they could get, keeping in mind all the challenges they had with the ever changing schedules of the actors involved and the Covid pandemic. Credit to the writers for making it feel natural despite being cliched. Sometimes, in this crazy world, predictable is all we need.
I have watched This is Us to feel all the emotions and I can guarantee that this episode goes into the list of one which succeeded. Being terribly invested in this relationship ever since they were a thing, this was a fantastic payoff. Every thing about the episode was well done, and the acting was fabulous! Kevin and Sophie have a way of looking at each other. That intense chemistry is really rare in on-screen couples. I do wish them a happily ever after, as much as Hollywood "rom-comy" it may be. Kevin is, after all, in showbiz by profession.
Young Sheldon: A Solo Peanut, a Social Butterfly and the Truth (2022)
Emotional and a welcome return!
Sheldon realising that bringing children up isn't easy and Paige coming back made for quite an eventful episode. Always good to see McKenna Grace! The drama with Dale and Meemaw was a bit flat though..
The Last Duel (2021)
The 'last' legally sanctioned 'duel' in French history.
What a performance by Jodie Comer 🙏.
God bless Sir Ridley Scott, may he deliver more such period pieces for us to be enthralled with. This movie couldn't have been more aptly titled, the literate duel of the movie was actually the last legally sanctioned trial by combat in French history. It has been produced and shot with aplomb.
It's a shame that this movie is heading towards totally tonking at the Box Office.
WandaVision: On a Very Special Episode... (2021)
Holy mother of FOX!
Say what you want, think what you can. It's not Wanda, or any villain who is in control of anything. It's simply Kevin Feige's world and we are living in it. Crazy stuff all throughout and I can only gasp at the vision the man has! Went and recast Pietro with a better version from another universe. Woah! This man can go anywhere he wants. This only makes me wait more eagerly for Spiderman 3! Fantastic episode.
This Is Us: A Hell of a Week: Part Two (2020)
Kevin and Sophie should have been Jack and Rebecca Part 2.
You know what's beautiful about childhood romances? You never ever forget them. This episode was brilliantly written and greatly acted. The plot was woven so beautifully, with the past and present being mirrored so tragically. It pains my heart to see that Kevin and Sophie couldnt get their timing right, because they really were meant for each other. The longingness in Kevin's eyes shows that so greatly.
I am just in awe with their pairing and even though it seems quite unlikely for them to get back together, in my separate world, i would always pair them when the show ends.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
So long, Skywalker!
Star Wars, as a franchise, has always been the embodiment of the phrase "a fun time at the cinema with the family". It has affected generations of moviegoers who have built their imagination courtesy this galaxy, far far away. Right from the opening crawl and John Williams' iconic renditions to the countless number of lightsaber duels and cultural impact through toys and collectibles, this space opera has touched countless lives.
The Rise of Skywalker may not be a perfect film, but it has it's heart at the right place. It may seem ridiculous at times, but the damage of the last chapter was maybe a bit too much to paper over. Despite trying to be inventive in storytelling, it genuinely still clings to the past. Although it closes a chapter to this saga (and maybe at the correct juncture), the fact that it left some huge questions unanswered will bother the die-hard fans. This sequel trilogy has a very divisive fan reaction, but we cannot discount it's place in the lore that is truly rich and diverse.
Coming to the film, it has nostalgia and Easter eggs galore. In the first half, a few Harry Potter parallels are worth noting. Callbacks to past films tie into the narrative smoothly and answer some of the pressing questions we had. Non clarification of some others will leave you unsatiated to the point where you don't leave the theatre with a merry skip. Nevertheless, JJ Abrams does deliver on retconning some portions which now finds a more appropriate story in the timeline. Although, some are just absurd and leave a sour taste altogether.
The visuals are historic, it's so good that half of your ticket's worth is already paid there. Seriously, these artists behind the visual effects enhance our viewing experience far too much than they get credit for. The music is legendary and incident-specific throughout. The performances (emoting specifically) by Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver is terrific to the point where it gives actual depth to shallowness in the plot. Despite their character arcs probably not evoking that sense of remembrance with the future generations as Luke and Vader's did to ours, they will still be a fond chapter in this universe's rich history. Same goes for Finn and Poe; they just aren't as iconic as Leia and Han. C3P0 is definitely the funniest in this movie, having the bulk of the humour duties vested in him.
A moment in "The Rise of Skywalker" has the voices of all notable Jedi from the comics, animated series and previous films coming together and asking someone to not lose hope and it is then when you realise, "The Force is always with us."
The Mandalorian: Chapter 7: The Reckoning (2019)
I have spoken!
This episode is all we have ever wanted Star Wars to be, isn't it? Terrific direction from Deborah Chow, as the action comes thick and fast. Moff Gideon will certainly be an able opponent in the episodes to come and i wonder what he did with Fennec Shand? All this has really got me too excited.
R.I.P Kuill. When he said his real name, i was sure this was his last appearance. Still it felt really sad to see him go. Wonder what happens to Baby Yoda now. So so optimistic of this great show!
Ford v Ferrari (2019)
Adventure drama with a heart. It's an engineer's wet dream!
"Sometimes words...they are just not useful. Tools, well they can fix and repair things."
Truly lived up to the billing and justified my choice of being the most awaited movie in the last quarter of 2019. This was totally an engineer's wet dream, but you don't really need to be a keen follower of motor sports to understand the movie. Rather, you will be compelled to research on it after you make the exit.
Most people will be deterred from watching it, just by looking at the runtime, but trust me, it's totally worth it. Everyone is in such fine form that it makes the watch a really pleasant one. Matt Damon as the iconic Carroll Shelby hits it out of the park. The lady playing Ken Miles' wife was fantastic and that scene where she has a bout of hysteria in a speeding car was definitely my favourite.
Go for this one. It's really a spectacle.
Agent Carter (2015)
Gripping, well written and beautifully acted.
I was late to the party of watching this fantastic show you, but I cannot get my head around the fact that it was cancelled. Goes to show how quality TV is rejected by the masses.
Hayley Atwell is outstanding here and the writing of the show is top notch. Full marks to the screenwriters for keeping it so tight and fresh. Would recommend it to all Marvel movie lovers who couldn't get enough of Agent Carter in the movies. This is how a spinoff should be made.
